How do they work? As far as I can tell you have to bundle a scientist on the same station as your highest planet/anomaly research bonus? Is that right? If so, whats the point in having multiple research bonuses on the same charcater, say 10 percent weapons and 5 high tech? On top of that, as far as i've seen mutiple research bonuses from scientists don't stack, so if you have two scientists at said highest station one with 10 weapons and the other 5, you only get the ten?

I'm asking mainly to ensure i'm reading this right.

Hello Atts;

This is how the scientists characters work:
When more than one scientist is assigned to the same location, there are synergistic effects.

Scientists are assigned to a research location. They give the research at that location a bonus that should be cumulative with the existing bonuses.

Each scientist at a research station provides research bonuses to the specific research area of the station (Weapons, Energy, HighTech). Additional scientists at the same research station provide half their skills on top of the first scientist, progressively halving with each additional scientist. Thus: Scientist 1 gives full 12% energy research bonus, Scientist 2 gives half of their 10% energy research bonus (5%), Scientist 3 gives one quarter of their 8% energy research bonus (2%), for a total of 19% energy research bonus (12 + 5 + 2).

Hope this helps!

One question I always had about that; Is the order fixed once determined or floating in each category?

ie: using the above 12/10/8 bonuses for say Weaponry. If the same 3 scientists also had in order Energy at 10/8/12. The Weaponry is treated standardly as shown above, does the Energy calculation use the order as the Weaponry, or a fresh one based on each individual category. So that the WPN is +19%, and Energy is also +19% not 17% or 16%

Just to show that this is not common knowledge among the user base...I was completely unaware of the stacking abilities of scientist characters.

You learn something new every day.

Im waiting for DW-Universe, and so theese questiones might seem odd, but:

1. Why would you stack scientists in a location when you loose halv of their bonuse? Would it not be wiser to just have scientists in separate locations? Or are the mumbers of available scientists large?

2. Iv read somwhere that it is recomended to not have specialized research-stations, but instead have all fields of research present in an location. Does the rule of stacking still apply?

Sorry for the noob questions, looking forward to get my hands on Universe...

1. If you put them at separate locations, only the highest bonus counts. Stacking them gives you the combined bonus. The number of scientists is never large, even with bigg empires I have never seem more than about four.

2. Stacking rules for scientis bonuses would apply exactly as before. I play with specialised research stations, it's a matter of personal prefernce.

I recommend having "all fields" stations, just so you don't end up wasting any scientist bonuses. On the surface, its value depends on the specific game and is most beneficial when you have a scientist with two high bonuses and don't have two good research locations. However, aside from not having to make a custom design there really isn't a draw back to "all field" stations. Even if you wanted to focus on one research type, you could just put more of one type of lab on your home star base. I just do that by default and then I have instant flexibility for where I put my scientists. Of course your then making a mockery of the whole concept of an "energy research station" or whatever it is, so it is a bit of a power gamer play.

I still have to decide between stacking or spreading, of course and that decision is always a tricky one. Usually I stack them if I'm pushing for bonuses in a specific field (probably the one the location has a bonus for) and often that results in at least one other field utilising the scientists stacked bonus over a different research locations. If I have a good research location of each type and more specialized scientists then I would probably spread them.

In the past, I have generally spread my scientist to specialized locations, looking at each ones best ability. Then I consider if one scientist could influence another in a positive way before I will stack them at the same location. A few need to be kept away from each other. I will have to review this policy in light of ehsumrell1's new information.

Just keep an eye out for anyone with the 'demoralizing' trait. You don't want them to be sitting in a stack of your best and brightest, or your best and brightest might end up a bit dull.

Depending on how concerned you are about enemy espionage/sabotage missions, the 'foreign agent' trait may also be something you want to keep an eye on. Nothing like having a space station blow up when there are a couple scientist characters on board, after all ...

Yeah, I had a Scientist with Demoralizing and Foreign Spy, who was quickly sent out to do exterior maintenance on the station without a suit.

One other consideration. While there is some value to spreading your scientists out - as described in above posts - consider the trade off with physical protection. Putting a good scientist at a research base near your border / frontier increases your losses should enemy(s) ships [ or kaltor/ardulius] destroy the base.

I find it more economical to transport that type of Scientist to a damaged ship and instead of sending it to
a station to repair, I order it to investigate the nearest Black Hole anomaly. Right click just inside the
event horizon.......should just about do it!

On the other hand, having a demoralizing Ambassador is a good thing. Send them to your enemies homeworld.
