OK, in my game against the AI, I figured I'd probe the Japanese Central Pacific Island defenses with some "Marine Raider" operations. Loaded some Marine Parachutists and supply on the Narwhal and Nautilus and landed the raiding party on Baker Is - with the intent to take them off after about a week max - really wanted to see if and how the AI would react. Well, I try to pull them out and I can't figure out how to load them back on the subs. The strat mode option is grayed out and can't load back in combat mode.

Any ideas, or are they doomed to die on the vine (or get an APD to pull em off?)

Don't units have to be in move mode for the SST to load?

I think the problem is you cannot dock... then you cannot do normal transport mission...

But the good news is that Baker Island has an air capacity of 1 .. meaning you can use transport planes or flying boats to take your raiders back home.

Otherwise, try an APD or see if changing to "move" helps

All from recent memory . . .

In the game Marine Raiders and Marine Parachutists are different animals. Only LCUs with the -p (parachutist) tag in the unit list can move on SSTs in Combat. Some units, like Kanga Force, say they're cdo/para (commando/para), but they aren't parachutists.

Marine Raider units can move on APDs. They can move on SSTs in Move mode. Kanga Force can move in Move mode. To attack they have to unload in Move, you convert to Combat, then attack next turn. So they better know what they're landing into. Parachutists unload in Combat, but I believe attack in Shock, same as if they had air-dropped. Check that to be sure.

I know that when Kanga loads in Move on an SST it also loads a little supply alongside. I have had occasional trouble on dot bases with re-loading them while there are still supplies to unload. Doesn't happen every time, but it has happened twice I think in one game of mine in about 20 landings.

Play with the SSTs. They're fun, flexible, and in a TF together can land about 210 Marines at once, enough to take down some smaller islands with just aviation units. The Japanese can't see them coming, and in my experience they don't even leave a text line in the Combat Events.txt file. The first appearance is the attack. They don't record in the combat report as an Amphibious landing either. I guess because they aren't. They're an SST landing.

SST stands for Super Secret Tricksy. They make me keep my eyes open, for sure. Strat map and filter for enemy LCUs .

Yeah, because Japan had Keyholes. Rice-powered no doubt.

Thanks Bullwinkle - fully agree they can be interesting to use. Mine were from the 3rd Marine Para Bn, and were in combat mode when loaded on the boats. I'll just fly em off with a PBY rescue op....

Will try again on another target and see what happens...

Nice tips Bullmon. Do you know if the small Australian Cdo unit will go onto SSTs in either mode?

The Kangas are Aussie I think (not Kiwi.) Is there another one? Kangas move in Move mode and unload that way. I've taken at least a dozen dot bases with them in the Lokasenna game. Don't have most of them anymore, but the Japanese take about 10-15 disabled troops re-taking, plus fuel and a transport.

I have not looked at Viper Force recently, but that might be a candidate. Don't remember the TOE. Some of the Chindits are para-capable and ought to work moving in Combat. Never used them though.
