Andy, I own "Railroad Simulator" (2011) that is powered by Trainz 12. I have not played it yet but it is on my "to do" play list. Have you played this game?

Hi Patrick,no i went straight from MSTS to TS2013,which then gets updated for free on Steam to TS2014.I did look at Trainz but for some reason i never took it further.TS2014 is awesome and the amount of "Community " Produced freeware(routes, assets and roling stock)is growing fast.I am in the throws of building a Route using the Stations named in the Flanders and Swann Song " The Slow Train".Where possible i am trying to replicate these, insome cases long lost Stations. So far i have been making the Route for about 2 weeks.

It started with just a Platform and 3 houses.

Now i am up to 3 Stations,a Colliery and Miners Village(with a Small Fair)a small Sidings and a Farm.

No worries,i put up an Update on the UK Train sim site.you can follow it here.

http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=365&t=137047

It might tempt you to go for TS2013/14,if you are tempted i strongly advise you get a copy of TS2013 off Amazon. That way you wont have to buy the Isle Of Wight,London to Brighton routes as steam updates you to TS2014(otherwise if you just get 2014 youll have to buy them).I was at first a bit overawed at route making, but i found some great "how to do's" on YT.Its really quite addictive makeing the route seeing as you start off with a big flat green area thats totally empty(unless you use the DEM files to DL the terrain of UK which saves you having to make the actual terrain.)TBH its pretty easy once you get to know where all the assets are and what tool does what.

The most recent edition of trainz is Trainz12 by n3v games in Australia.
TS2014 by Railworks from the UK.
I have and enjoy both.
With Trainz you pay a fixed fee to download additional items which run into many thousands at about $12 per quarter.
TS2014 goes the dlc route with each item individually priced . You want to buy it and all the dlc? Currently $3600 on steam.

Thanks for the info. I have Trainz (TS12) by N3v. Not a big fan. Lots of hype for little real return. Don't like the distribution model and 90% of the user made content is crap. The paid DLC is pretty good though though.

I will give TS2014 a look.

EDIT: Gave TS2014 a look on Steam. Pretty nice until I saw the price of DLC which in general for routes seems to be the cost of the main game!!! WTF? And $20 for a loco?? Someone is really proud of their production. Too proud for me.

Dont discount TS2014,yes the DLC is pricey but they do have a lot of Sales on Steam, recently i got an advanced Loco from Just trains for £3.50,Woodhead route for less than a tenner. There are plenty of free routes in the Steam Workshop as well as Scenarios. On the UK Trainsim website they have quite a lot of Locos, rolling stock and routes etc in their Freeware packs.I got loads and i mean loads of scenery, buildings ground textures, bridges, clutter, rollinf stock and locos for absoloutly free.Currently there are nearly a dozen community route projects going on,most of which will be available as freeware. If i were you i would get TS 2013,let steam update it to 2014,then buy the Western Lines of Scotland and if you can afford it the Somerset & Dorset routes. They are GREAT routes with brilliant scenarios also there must be well over 40 scenarios for these routes in the Steam Workshop. Also a lot of Community made routes include assets from these routes as they are so good.Have a look at the UKtrainsim forum and check out the boards and the Download Library, there is just so much stuff there for free.I now ONLY buy DLC when there is a Sale and most sales will be announced on the forums.

I must say that the Advanced 4MT is an amazing piece of work.I love the "Warm mode" features and the smoke effects are the best i have ever seen. This is the one i bought for £3.50!
