If so, to what? Knavey is currently checking the upgrade path of -every- effing ship in UV, and after 5 months has seen several USN ships upgrade (usually about 30% increase in AAA). He was telling me last night tho, that altho he has gotten several IJN ships back from Japan, none of them are showing any increase in AAA value.

I told him I'd post here to see if he was wasting his time with IJN. Do the IJN ships upgrade at? If so, does anyone know what they upgrade to? Do any of them gain radar sets (which is also near and dear to Knavey's heart).

Thanks,
-F-

I'd like to know as well.

After checking the database and playing several of the long scenarios, I am assuming that the "upgraded" IJN ships are those that turn up as reinforcements. Which means, when you get them, they turn up with radar (some) and with AA/ASW superior to their pre-war set-up. If they don't have radar at that point, I asume they never will.

I've stopped sending ships back (unless damaged) as I don't think you will get a further upgrade to AA. The ASW side of things may differ as the escorts could get a better depth charge if sent back. Haven't paid much attention to ASW improvements as I normally have finished games by early '43.

If someone knows the full story, I'd like to hear it as I keep getting stuck playing the Japs in PBEMs.

You'll notice my post in the BUGS forum asking pretty much the same thing. I went through them for months and months and months and the only thing I think I ever saw getting upgraded was 1 DC changing type, but I can't even be positive about the change as they get rather blurry after a while...

Feinder is right...every FFFFF ship in the IJN including transports is on my list. I am only tracking AAA though and all I do is send it directly back to Truk and Pearl. So far it appears to be a system that HIGHLY favors the USN and since I play the IJN Feinder knows that gets my goat.

Not one IJN ship has upgraded yet, but I am only 9 weeks into the scenario. The USN on the other hand begins to upgrade at what appears to be 6/1/42. All ships after that date are using the first upgrade weapons loadout. I am still several weeks from a ship that has been returned twice to see if there is a benefit from sending ships back to PH immeadiately upon getting them.

Couple of things I am seeing in this test...

By sending EVERY ship back to PH or JPN, it keeps the priority HIGH on both sides keeping flow of good ships into theater pretty steady.

I am sending stuff back undamaged, so time to return will be adjusted for those repairs. Upgrading does not seem to affect the amount of time it takes to return...ie putting new stuff on USN vessels does not change how long it takes them to return to the area.

IJN takes 4 weeks to make round trip. USN 6 weeks. These are MINIMUM transit times. Sometimes it takes longer, but I think this has to do with the game releasing the ships to you.

The USN AAA upgrades are phenomenal. Around 10-30% upgrade in AAA capability on EVERY ship class with a few exceptions. Don't bother sending the KIWI class back. I haven't seen them upgrade yet, but they don't have 40mms on them either.

Lexington is indeed bugged if she is supposed to increase AA everytime. It was really wierd. First time I tried it she went from 2078 to 1948 to 2180 in AA values. The second time I tried it she went from 2078 to 2208 and I haven't seen her back for the third refit.

Couple of other things I am testing while doing this...I have a set of IJN Zero2s on training at 30%. 85 skill inititally has increased to 86 over a 8 week period. 69 skill initially has gone to a 74 over an 8 week period.

A set of 4 B-17 squads at 67/68/69/71 has gone to 67/69/69/74. These vary from 30-100% committment, with very little reduction in fatigue.

Training ships at sea...might as well forget it. TK/AO/AP/PC are in group been at sea for 5 weeks. Day/Night values.

TK 17/10 begin 19/17 end
AO 24/20 begin 25/21 end
AP 23/19 begin 25/20 end
PC 47/43 begin 47/45 end

The ratings of the captains were unchanged also over the course of the 5 weeks.

Well thats all I can think of just off the brief test I have run. Will keep you updated.

Knavey - Regarding training, be advised that the more experienced a pilot or crew is, the LESS likely they are to gain a point during an experience check. So a pilot of 20xp is going to gain much faster than a pilot of 70xp (who will likely gain nothing from training).

Now, interesting possability that -should- be verified. Is the experience gain checked every DAY or every TURN. You're playing 7-day turns, which makes a big difference in experience gain if the check is only made every turn. Frankly, it has been my observation that experience gain among pilots of exp 50s DO go up at a reasonable rate, but that may be that if it's checking every 2 days (in our game), instead of every 7 days (as your test). Obviously, there is alot of potential for "Observer Error" in my statements, but that the exp check is made every day (regardless of the number of days per turn), is something that should be verified.

Also, be aware that "non-combat" type ships have a maximum exp rating (thru "normal" curising) of 25. Combat ships it may be 45 or something. And there may be two levels of combat ships line and 2ndary. Line ships would be DDs and up, 2ndary would be PCs and SCs etc. I'm not sure if there are 2 classes of combat ships, but I do know that the max benefit from training is substantially lower for non-combat ships.

Check out the new avatar bro, pretty cool eh?

Hmm, 7 day turns eh?

Two things to add:

Put ships in a combat group instead of a transport group for testing of skill increases. ie: bombard a base vs cruise around.

Try this same thing with planes. Bomb a 0/0 base instead of training. I'd be curious if there was a different skill level increase for live fire exercises vs swimming around in your own back yard.

Might be tough to test the planes with 7 day turns as you'll crash and burn a lot of them...

IJN Akitsuki-class destroyers; AA-weapons;

Originally class had 4x25mm AA guns.

After little combat experience following happened;

In early 1943 the light AA was increased to 15x25mm.
After June 1944, this was again increased to 29x25mm and 4x13mm.
Vessels completed after June 1944 carried between 40 and 51x25mm.

In real life that is. By '44 most Destroyer classes sported more AA-firepower than battleships at '41.
