So decided to give one of the Red Storm scenarios a go and ganged up on this one Flanker with three Eagles. I had them close to a fairly close distance to maximise pK and ordered them all to Fox 1 simultaneously, the Flanker getting off a missile almost immediately after the Sparrows left their rails. Happily one of the Sparrows found its mark with the AA-10 still in the air and I thought to myself: "Well don't have to worry about that Alamo anym-"

*BOOM*

Bug? Remnant radar illumination? The proximity fuse of the missile doing its job? Realise you guys would love to see a track, but can someone tell me what happened?

I think that this is completely correct.

Alamo C uses preprogrammed flight path with mid-course updates. For the final phase (or after the "datalink" is lost), the onboard radar lights up and missile is completely autonomous.

Semi-active weapons have a 5-second "slack" that allows them to temporarily keep tracking a target without successful illumination. This emulates both proximity fuzes and also the "tracking memory" feature that most such weapons have in order to cope with glitches/fluctuations in guidance (and jamming/LOS-blockage spikes).

In your case the Alamo impacted just 3 seconds after guidance was lost, so you can assume it was close enough that the proximity fuze did its work.

Thanks.

when you start getting close to the last couple seconds you should probably still be worried.

The AA-10/R-27 has no onboard radar - then it would be an ARH missile (like the R-77 or AMRAAM), instead of a SARH missile. Adding an onboard illuminator would be nontrivial, to say the least, and no variant with the R-27 seeker and ARH exists. The Chinese have replaced the R-27s seeker with the R-77 seeker, though, so there are ARH R-27s, I just don't consider them to be R-27s anymore.
