It seems like lot of people think media like comic books, animated movies/shows, and video games are meant only for children. I think this attitude stifles creativity. I think there should be more comics and animated films/shows that cover mature topics. I think American animation is geared too much toward adult comedy and children's entertainment. Can't we have an animated show or movie cover a serious topic like war or politics? Comic books have already started covering serious subject matter. When will animation grow up? If comics could move past super heroes I don't see any reason why animation should be relegated to adult comedy or children's entertainment.

Oh really? I know about the myth, and that in western nations it has been upheld with censorship. There is slow change of attitude with few people making a lot of noise with claims that all japanese animation ( = anime) is pornography (greatly exaggerated) and violence of Grand Theft Auto game series and some other video games will ruin the children.

But what comes to western comics and cartoons, you really should expand your view beyond the America. Tons of great comics suitable to all ages comes from Belgium and Britain specializes in war comics. And we already have dedicated thread for anime and manga

Maybe, if you look only at mainstream USA market. From elsewhere comes serious comics and cartoons for serious adults. And some games Matrix is pushing out aren't exactly child-friendly either (WitP and the likes).

For what it's worth, Grave of the Fireflies (Studio Ghibli) is one of the greatest war movies I've ever seen.

Grave of the Fireflies was one of the best war movies I have watched! Do you think American animators can produce a war movie?
