I created a minidump (.dmp) file that can be opened with Visual Studio. It has been uploaded as an attachment.

I think this has been a persistent problem with DW for a while, possibly a memory leak somewhere in the game. With all the patches it hasn't really been fixed in my experience, still happens to me after an hour or so of playing and I have to save, before running out of memory, and restart the game for it to work fine again. You can search the forum for solutions like I did when this happened but for the most part people have told me the best solution is to upgrade to a 64 bit Windows and have more than 4GB of memory installed.

I can only play on a 700 star galaxy or I get the same error, as you can see in my signature I just about scrape the requirements needed, since switching to a 700 10x10 I have never, touch wood, had it happen again.

please read post 22, it may help you understand more, 32bit o/s and i think the game has a memory leak also after long game use, save every 30mins and restart etc and you don't get the problem

edited(The 32-bit architecture has a memory access limit of 4GB (2^32 bytes). This permits you to use about 2.75-3.5GB of RAM after IO reservations are factored in, so minus your video ram and you get less.)

You may want to perform an inventory of what's installed on your current rig and possibly install a 64-bit version. Please note that any 32-bit driver will not work within a 64-bit OS but you can install a 32-bit application within a 64-bit OS. You will also have to format your system drive and then perform a fresh install of the 64-bit OS.

Thank you for that, always happy to try new things

As you can see from the signature I have optimized XP to the best I can, I no longer have the issues, I went through this extensively with official folk

sorry quoted wrong post then

didn't mean it for you, but thread poster

my bad

and tbh xp doesn't use the fancy memory management that win 7 and 8 uses, so for some doesn't give the same errors most of the time, shame it's been put out to pasture and the 64bit version wasn't as well used.

but i always liked xp 32bit, 64bit never caught on the same as never got all the drivers working.

win 7 was great, had both version and still do use both 32 and 64bit on test machines.

moved to win 8.1 64bit and run everything in it, even dos programs, and never looked back.

it just works, and so far for me, it's the best gaming o/s so far, until 9 comes out that is :)

I am hoping to move to Win7 64bit soon, new build and OS. I love XP, great OS, shame it got put to pasture. Do not like Win8, full stop.

don't want to go off topic, but i agree with you.

xp is great, one of the best and now 2nd best gaming o/s

windows 8 was rubbish, poor driver support at start, a massive step back in many ways and areas.

i've had it from the start and alpha and beta'ed it so it's been a bumpy ride for me.

only changed my mind with windows 8 when 8.1 came out tbh

now i wouldn't go back to anything else, or want to use an older version on my main gaming rig.

yes most programs and games are still written in 32bit code, which runs no quicker on a 64bit o/s, and thats a fair point for many not to upgrade.

but as more stuff is run on a modern pc, the limits of 2.75-3.5GB of RAM is too much for me, so opted to go 64bit and have more stuff running in the background if i want them to.

i've only had 1 memory error in a game, and that was a leak with the game exe as well and got fixed in the end, so fault wasn't the o/s for that, this game seems to hog memory when you play for long hours, something i haven't come across as yet as never played it for more than an hour max as yet as busy doing other stuff atm..

a temp fix for the above mentioned game in question run on wind 8.1 was to run it in compat mode, i chose windows xp sp3 and the game worked flawlessly but wasn't as quick or as fluid when used, but did make it more stable for longer until the fix game out...

anyway i digress and have gone way off topic

I used to have a 32 bit Vista. It was not too happy on giant galaxies. I switched to 64 bit win 7, and have not seen those kinds of errors since.

I have not used 1000 star galaxies much, but I have been running a lot of fully automated games on 700 star galaxies until the game is very mature without ever seeing a memory crash using 64-bit and lots of ram.

DW should not need a _lot_ of ram, though, but 8GB system memory would not hurt (on a 64 bit OS).

Thanks everyone for your help.
Just discovered even thou my laptop is 2008, it has 64 bit support!

Just downloaded 64-bit Drivers from manufacturers (Cd/DVD, Video Card, Audio), and going to use Driver Booster/ Windows Update to get the rest when I install the OS.

It has to be a clean install so I am backing up my personal data.

Hi Azurian,

As your operating system is 32-bit, your access to system memory will be limited to 4GB (or less) which means that you will likely find it ideal to play on the smaller half of the possible galaxy sizes. Are you running with any mods enabled?

If you have a saved game that reproduces this for you, you can upload it for us per the instructions here and we'll see if there's anything unusual that we can optimize based on your game settings:

Upgrading to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and running 1.9.5.1 fixed all of my issues. The game seems to run faster and more stable.

Note: If you have a genuine Windows 7 product key, you can choose to have either a 32 bit or 64 bit version without having to buy another key.
