This has bothered me for a littlw bit but havent felt compelled to ask until i recently seen the "Absolutely Huge Shipname Mod" by Hannable. But why dont my military ships get personal names while my exploration, construction, colony, and every private ship do?

Like all my military ships are named after their design name with a two digit number after like Excaliber 01, 02, 03 and so on.

Is there something I need to toggle to get my military ships to randomly generate their own names or what?

That only applies to the "smaller" types of ships, i.e., the escorts, frigates and destroyers. Cruisers and capital ships (and carriers too, I'm guessing without being able to recall it) get personalized names, unless something else is specified in shipNames.txt.

So could i change this in the Shipnames.txt file to let the smaller ships have names too?

Military ships won't have personal names unless you add those names in the shipNames.txt file and then place that file in a customization theme. For instance, if you put my ship name mod into a customization theme, all of your military ships will have personal names. Or, you can select each individual ship by pressing the "ships" button. To the right there should be a field in which to type a new name.

I have a shipnames file for the Federation that has entries like:

Cruiser: USS Constitution 1700, USS Enterprise 1701, USS Constellation 1702, USS Hood 1704,

ect ect ect. Works great. They come off the assembly line all named up and with their numbering, ect...

Just wish you could config the NPC races you mod to have this much control over naming.

Yeah that would be nice to name NPC ships ... but damn, you'd have to make a shipName.txt file for each race. My eyes are bleeding already.

Is there somewhere to actually get names of Klingon ships? Romulan?

Try Memory Alpha or Memory Beta, two Star Trek wikis (Alpha deals with the shows and movies, Beta deals with licensed works). Should be one of the first links that pop up on Google if you search for 'memory alpha' or 'memory beta.'

By default, all Escorts, Frigates and Destroyers share their design name and a sequential number. The rest of the ships have a random name.

What I would like is that all ships had their names made like escorts, FFs and DDs but with the random name added at the end. This is because I prefer to have various designs of the same kind of ships, and with the random names is difficult to know which is which. For example: BB Defender Shadow colossus (high defence, fast jumpers) v.s. BB Assault Grey Cloud (heavily armed, assault pods).

Is it possible to mod something like that?

Right now I only use ES, FF and DD designs, because they allow me to know the role the play at a glance.

I have extensive shipnames for Klingon, Romulan, Federation, and Gorn, if you are interested.

I used a combination of:
- Star Fleet Battles ship registry lists
- Official canon ship registry lists (although I have an issue with this, as they are Holly-dum types and have no respect for logic or continuity...
- Themed on race. For example, I consider the 'modern' ridged forehead Klingons to be a morph of Mongol-Viking stereotypes, so I name accordingly.
Klingon names attached. It's your personal preference, really. These are denoted 'IKV', which stands for Imperial Klingon Vessel' and was used in the original TOS series. Star Trek: NG (oh god can I put Weseley in the agonizer booth?) wussied this up to 'IKS', which I attribute to the Federation-Klingon alliance.

I also can't stand the made-up Klingon language, horrible for ship naming too. Why call a ship Ba'Qos when you can call it 'Blood Drinker' or 'Night Hunter', or 'Chariot of Demons that Hunts the Stars for Souls' (jk)
