Attack at Chungking is bloody. Critically though, forts are reduced another level but is a close run thing:
quote:

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 195466 troops, 2181 guns, 832 vehicles, Assault Value = 5842

Defending force 186030 troops, 409 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2121

Japanese adjusted assault: 1183

Allied adjusted defense: 1121

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 5)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 4

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
17827 casualties reported
Squads: 134 destroyed, 1203 disabled
Non Combat: 18 destroyed, 84 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 92 disabled
Guns lost 137 (8 destroyed, 129 disabled)
Vehicles lost 19 (2 destroyed, 17 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
22456 casualties reported
Squads: 548 destroyed, 537 disabled
Non Combat: 346 destroyed, 724 disabled
Engineers: 21 destroyed, 29 disabled
Guns lost 188 (131 destroyed, 57 disabled)
Units destroyed 13

After the attack, the best division is at 76 fatigue, 79 disruption. Experience gains for the divisions are high (one went from 53 to 63) but the artillery don't gain experience.

Australia

Lightnings sweep Darwin but nothing meets them.

Liberators finish off the oil at Boela and B-17s hit Saumlaki port where an unlucky APD has been trying to fight fires and is sunk.

At Toyohara

Sometimes the Japanese can save a ship! The xAK Tonegawa Maru hit a mine at Toyohara and disbanded in port with 97 float damage and 11 fires and I assumed it was lost. Over the next two days fires slowly got worse but now they are out and only 84 days to fix the system and minor damage.

Do you know where they are flying from?

Daly Waters almost certainly but there is nothing much I can do about it. Have started dropping groups of Nicks at possible targets in the hope to give him a bloody nose. However, most of the fighters were at Darwin and are now recovering at Koepang.

November 20th 1942

Air Losses: 4 Japanese, 4 Allied, 3 Pilots
Japanese occupy:
Allies occupy:
Japanese land at:
Allies land at:

Pacific

Near Canton Island, I-27 finds a task force with the South Dakota but is unable to penetrate screens and misses a shot at DD Phelps.

Burma

Try a night attack against Silchar airfield with about 130 planes. 20 Mohawk IV are on CAP and the planes do poorly scoring a total of a single runway hit and doing no damage to any aircraft present (recce reports 92 fighters and 70 bombers present). 2 Mohawks are lost to ops and 2 helens to flak and 1 to ops.

Allied forces have withdrawn from one of the hexes they entered in the jungle.

China

At Chungking the damage to the Allies is visible, I now have a 3::1 raw AV Value.
quote:

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 8701 troops, 639 guns, 502 vehicles, Assault Value = 5443

Defending force 173446 troops, 308 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1776

Allied ground losses:
819 casualties reported
Squads: 50 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Will I be able to attack again before zombie units replace the Allied losses? The progress at Chungking is quite good. 4 weeks ago he had 3120 AV and 703 guns behind level 6 forts now he has less than 60% of the AV, 50% of the guns and level 4 forts.

Australia

B-17s are back hitting Darwin. Attacking from 15000 feet, flak scores no kills.

Engineering

Cebu to 3. Neikiang to 5. Allies expand Tassafarongo to 5.

R&D

Ki-43-IIIa to 2/44

Allied Plans

Sightings of Allied ships are few. I have no evidence where the carriers are and sub sightings are down.

For the subs, he could be sending them back to base and then out with the intention of attacking my convoys when he gets better torpedoes. Or, he could be re-locating them to his next planned area of operations.

For the carriers, the main worry I have is that he has sent them to the Indian Ocean and will either land on or raid Sumatra. He could also be heading for Moulmein or Ramiree Island to try and unhinge the Burma front.

Or, he could be anywhere else.

Burma

Night strike at Ledo breaks up but there is no CAP and manage to get 1 P-38G and 1 C-47 on the ground for 1 flak loss.

Blenheims strike at Magwe at night and score 1 hit while losing 3 to air-air and 3 to flak.

China

Finish off a lone Chinese unit near Chengtu. This seals the fate of the Chinese in that area.

Australia

Liberators hit Koepang at night. The fields are at 99% expansion towards size 8 and are quite full. In air-air he downs many fighters and then destroys 4 aircraft on the ground, 2 B-24D are lost to flak and ops. During the day, lightnings sweep and heavy losses are taken and only 3 P-38F and 1 P-38G shot down.

Darwin is hit again.

Allies try a bombardment of Darwin, I guess this was just for recce purposes:

When I tried setting night sweeps they didn't fly. Any ideas what the criteria are for flying night sweeps?

The manual lists it as an option and he does seem to have launched one.

I wonder if it is only possible for fighter-bombers? Or, may be it was an error in his settings and he left it on commanders decision?

Can't NF can fly sweeps at night? I seem to remember the option, but I would have to check again.

Not that I have a ton of experience with sweeping, but I always set mine to Home port and destination of the place with mines, with 'do not retire'. Haven't had any problems yet.

I don't have any problem with AMc sweeping either. They clear the mines, either by traditionally sweeping, or by hitting them.

Okay, I had mine set to a 1 hex patrol zone. So in the interests of experimentation, I have one with home port of the place with mines, 1 with another home port and remain on station and 1 on patrol.

More Allied encroachment in the North.

Same old attacks. Allied AV at Chungking continues to increase. He is getting resurrected now the units that were destroyed in the first attack. Since the last attack he has reinforced with:

16th, 17th, 2nd Construction Regiment
1st Group Army
18th Chinese Base Force
53rd, 6th, 70th chinese Corps

AV is up to over 2500 now. If I attack in 2 days I will be attacking with 5100 so it is close.

It still remains quiet, no Allied activity reported. The longer it remains quiet the more I imagine some massive hammer blow falling (invasion Hokkaido, Java, etc.).

Burma area

The AMC lurking in the Indian Ocean turns out to be the AMC Pansy worth 4 VP and I over do it by sending a task force of 5 CL to engage her. She is sunk.

More signs of Allied attacks in Burma.

China

Send some air strikes to help on the attack on the Burma road. This is just enough to get the odds up to 1::1 but the Allies continue to hold:
quote:

Ground combat at 67,44 (near Tsuyung)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 10863 troops, 310 guns, 935 vehicles, Assault Value = 537

Defending force 17839 troops, 168 guns, 17 vehicles, Assault Value = 114

Japanese adjusted assault: 370

Allied adjusted defense: 370

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
953 casualties reported
Squads: 31 destroyed, 14 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 14 disabled

Supply shortages mean attack will have to pause. A third of a division is moving to assist, this will keep within stacking limits as this hex has a larger limit than others on the road (30,000 instead of 20,000).

At Chungking, order another attack as the odds look okay:
quote:

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 8413 troops, 627 guns, 458 vehicles, Assault Value = 5135

Defending force 195307 troops, 249 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2422

Allied ground losses:
1804 casualties reported
Squads: 99 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 9 (9 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Australia

Was he running without escorts? RO-60 needs to return to base to get more torpedoes.

At Chungking, get a 2::1 result and reduce forts to 3:

Non Combat: 598 destroyed, 755 disabled

Disruption on the attackers is high again but I have some fresh divisions to commit so will not wait for disablements to fix and can attack again as soon as disruption is under control. The alternative would be to fix everything and launch a shock attack next time that might finish off the forts. Any suggestions?

Kunming is burnt again. Also, a small daylight raid hits the airfield and destroys a couple of transport and a recon plane on the ground. Correction: Kweiyang airfield was hit.

Blenheims hit the 2nd tank on the road near Paoshan but damage is minor. The 2nd Tank has some 8cm AA and I have a couple of AA machinecannon companies present to deter him from bombing below 6000 feet. Also have the AA part of 21st Ind Mixed Brigade coming along (the lighter parts have been flown to Burma).

Australia

I had to look back at the combat report to remind me whether he bombed Darwin, he did.

Engineering

Ominato airfield goes to 8 providing some extra protection for Hakodate. Allies expand Russell Islands airfield to 4 and Ndeni port to 4.

R&D

Ki-43-IV to 5/44

State of infantry divisions after the attack at Chungking. Note the levels of disruption and fatigue but also the experience levels of these divisions.

Value of SigInt

So at 150,144 a sub tried to attack a convoy. At 148,143 I get a sig int report. If I take those two as being the same convoy and extrapolate it comes out on Ocean Island in about 3 days time. Looks like he may be making a move there.

A topic in the tech support area reveals that an ACM uses an average of 20 fuel per day that it tends mines. I have about 50 ACM looking after minefields and wonder whether it is worth abandoning some of them. That is a 1000 fuel a day or about 1,000,000 supply for the rest of the game! Do you all maintain the minefields at home?

Are the SST worth building? The "Type Yu" ones, that are available in 1943, seem to have short ranges, be very inefficient, but are still 22 VP each. Some of the later ones look a bit more useful.

Gasmata and Rota forts improved.

R&D

B6N2 advances to 12/42 and enters production. Two factories will roll into producing 60 a month. Not counting groups used for training, there are about 200 kates to replace so this should be enough.

A6M3a, Ki-21-IIb, Ki-46 KAI and Ki-45 KAIb all become available but will not be produced.

Nakajima Ha-44, with 1 factory of size 80, enters production. That should be enough to cover research and production of KI-94-II unless things go extremely well.

The 47mm Type 01 AT Gun becomes available as an upgrade for the 37mm Type 01. It is a slight boost to anti-soft and significant boost to anti-armour and penetration. There are about 1150 of the old guns to replace which would take about 8000 arms and supply. I shall upgrade all the ones likely to be attacked by Allies soon but may skip those in the China.

The Type 3 mine becomes available, but I think I will have to wait before I can start using air-dropped mines.

November in review

Darwin was resupplied, marred by the loss of the Ryuho to a single 500lb bomb.

In China, have taken Tsuyung and pushed a bit further along the road. At Chungking, 3 attacks have reduced forts from 6 to 3 with the latest achieving a 2::1 result. Excepting some 4 corps near Paoshan, all Chinese forces have been isolated and will not be able to move to India.

Allies have started bombing industry and have knocked out some oil production at Lanchow and at Magwe.

Otherwise, tended to be a quiet month.

Industry Status

Disappointing drop in supplies, probably caused by expanding engine production.

Some fuel increase but not as much as would like. Carriers were active during the resupply of Darwin and wasted some fuel on ineffective bombardments at Darwin. Also, am burning loads of supply by ACM.

HI increase is fine given the large Vehicle and Armaments growth. Vehicle stockpiles are being hit a bit as the 3rd Tank Division is outfitted.

Oil: -84,405
Fuel: +20,604

Engine Production

Stockpiles increasing to cover future builds and R&D. But Aichi Ha-60, Nakajima Ha-34 and Nakajima Ha-35 production probably exceeds future needs. However, can turn these off later rather than now.
