Gents I'm having a problem with the battle generator.

In EF I entered 1944-July-South-Division-Plains city RR and I get 3 error messages and the game crash's
or rather kicks the game back to the start window.
The messages are East Front,exe: error ID 1000( unitallocator.cpp,line 949
( unitallocator:BuildForce for nation Russia Level Division unable to get starting force.

Line 886 returns NULL and then line 636 Try another nation dummy.

This is with a fresh install and the 2.01 update

That's not a "crash". It's the game taking exception to your requested configuration -- not all combinations are supported! -- then returning you to the starting point. WAD.

ok so it's picky :) That means you can't choose a division sized battle?

That is correct. Unfortunately, for (too many, alas) nations OOBs and ORGs, for (some) dates, even division-sized random battles are not supported -- by the data.

Generally speaking, you will have better luck with

  • smaller sized engagements
  • bigger nations
  • standard timelines (i.e., matching the actual war timelines)

    The more you deviate away from those "ideals", the less likely the unit data files have the sufficient scope and flexibility to support more "obscure", "far-out" battle combinations.

    I'm not saying that your attempts were "obscure" or "far out". We know that some combinations -- what should seem perfectly reasonable -- the unit data do not support.

    So, it's a data problem. Fortunately, using the new -X NoEncryption data option, you can mod the data to support your desired battle combination. Not saying it's easy, but it can be done.

    For more info, refer to Crossroads' Dev Diaries #2 & #3.

    Note that, sometime in 2016, we plan to release a 2.10 "mega patch" with a clean-up, expansion, and filling out of the game data.

    Until then, there are limits unfortunately. (But no worse than they've ever been.)

    Note too that at some points you are given the choice of force and type -- a list of OOBs and ORGs. (For example, a choice between the original Talonsoft OOB vs. the MCS ("Matrix Combat Series") one. Or between infantry vs. armored. Or SS or ...) Some choices work, others don't. If at first you don't succeed, try try again. You might just get lucky.

    Tide, it seems you managed to pick a combo that does not work. Could you provide a bit more information:

    - Which nations?
    - Which exact date?

    I have fooled around a lot with timelines and nations, and at times certain unit sized do not work. I have got most of my error situations with Regts and Bdes, while often having luck with Div and Corps sizes in addition to Bn sized battles.

    Give it a few more tries with various sizes and see what happens?

    Terrain should not be a factor, nation specific dates and sizes are.

    Getting late at this part of world, again, give it a few goes with varuing dates and sizes to see what happens.

    It could be that since German and Russians for an example have quite huge Campaign00/01.pdt rosters a formation that does not support Div size was randomly picked?

    it was German Russian. July 1943. I got Battalions to work just fine but regiment wouldn't work either. I can believe I picked the wrong parameters...That's just me :) I'll play around with it and find out what works for me...Should be interesting.

    You reported a problem with Division, while I succeeded. Very difficult to pinpoint where the random build fails, as the unit rosters in Campaign00.oob and Campaign01.oob are so huge.

    If you have a favourite time period to create battles in, perhaps you should consider building a "Random Battle Pack" for it? As discussed in Developer Diary #2.

    Even a specific OOB like this can fail at times... For an example, testing at Dec 1944, Bde size (German OOB not able to build) while all other sizes work out. Looking at the German OOB, well, there are no Bde size units there (although I have a suspicion the random generation process is far more complex than this). Still, I call this little battle pack a success

    So, if there's a specific time period or battle you enjoy, I suggest you'd try to create a more specific Campaign00/001.oob structure for them.

    Kursk 1943 Random Battle Pack?

    Go for it!

    I gave this a few more spins, trying out various Engagement Types.

    I was now I able to reproduce errors with Division sized Battles too.

    I tried it six times (with various Engamement Types), it failed four times, once with German OOB and three times with Russian OOB. It succesfully built the battle two times.

    This would seem to suggest that if you indeed enjoy July 1943 in Eastern Front, do copy the Campaign00/01.oob files to a user mod folder and put in only those units you want to see. Then see that they play out with the Engagement types and battle sizes you enjoy. For an example if you enjoy Armored Breakthroughs, make sure both sides have the armored units with high level organization types you plan to play with.

    EDIT: to be more systematic: I created a German-Russian July 1943 Division sized Meeting engagement three times.

    Failed twice for Russians, built once succesfully.

    As for the failed attempts, the generator randomly picked a Russian unit it seems, matching the time period chosen, from this Campaign00.oob (unchanged since 2008) - but which one! Go figure:

    So yeah, interested in this time period? Copy these Campaign00/01.oob files aside, have only those units left there that you want to see. See my Post #10.

    Enable the files with JSGME, then run the Battle Generator.

    Also this would further suggest, that like I did in Developer Diary #2 do put the generated Random##.* scenario files aside, and tweak them further for maximum playability and enjoyment. Even so you can quite quickly create cool random battles.

    So I am definitively interested to learn how your EF Random Battle Pack - Kursk 1943 comes out!

    After reading all this, IMHO I kind of liked it better the old way.
    Now there seems to be to much playing around with files and using the mod enabler as a solution to get what was standard years and up to a few months ago.

    Its kind of fouled up now dev team.

    I tried this morning generating random battles in EFII for the following:
    September, 1943-Armored Breakthrough-Russian nation-German nation-Hazy weather-southern sector and Medium hills and woods.
    The only one that would generate is battalion!?

    Now the $64,000 questions is: How will this affect DCG scenario generation?

    Well I tried it in the DCG Citadel and Beyond. At the start of the DCG it generated in a Battalion and a Corps but would not generate in Regiment, Brigade or Division.
    So with that having been said does that necessarily mean that if you take a promotion from battalion commander to regimental
    commander the DCG game will crash on the next scenario generation? I sincerely hope not!

    Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

    Ivan, the timelines.dat is new only in a way that what was hardcoded before is now in a parameter file as well. If this file is missing the hardcoded defaults are used. The only difference is that this now opens up the timelines for those who want to create something new that earlier was not possible.

    The crashes you report are new to me and should not have anything to do about timelines.dat as such. Investigating.

    Just tried that DCG, as German with a regiment, it wouldn't generate a Russian regiment....

    It seems to be dependent on what OOBs you specify.

    I succeeded launching the Citadel and Beyond DCG, at regimental level, specifying Infanterie Corps MCS, not Infantry Corps Talonsoft, Infanterie Division (v).

    Obviously some sets of choices fail to work. But others succeed. Try try again?

    Something to consider when trying the battle generator.

    As the war progressed, The Russians moved to a Corp/Brigade type system, in particular for their armoured forces. If you try and generate a regimental sized battle, the program will look for a non-existent Russian regiment to match the German one. At this point it will get confused, as there are none for 1943+ - only armoured brigades. We will work on correcting this in the 2.10 UPDATE for 2016.

    I may look at a OOB work-around later this year, unfortunately, I am rather swamped until Christmas.

    This hiccup didnt affect the DCG's I was testing at any point, because one is choosing a completed ORG structure, which lets you know that particular size isn't available for that time frame.
