I don't know if it's intentional, but after a battle, why does it take so long for private ships to go back to doing what they were doing? I often see ships doing nothing for years just stranded out in the middle of nowhere not moving, even though they are not damaged in any way.

Not sure at all, but I think you can see privates sitting outside colonies before finding a job as well. So maybe they just fled, and found no reason to move, just like they could after completing their mission?

Escaping probably makes them cancel their missions.
