Today, we (myself, my kids, and rjopel) had an opportunity at Strat Con to visit with Mr. Shelby Johnson, a Bataan Death March Survivor. He regaled us with stories about being a Japanese POW, close encounters with Iguanas that involve a .45 and numerous rounds being expended, and a love story of a woman who waited 6 more years than the original 2 she though she would have to wait to marry the man she loved!

This is the book he has written, they have had numerous print runs and have printed nearly 5k in number.

Left to right, nashvillen, Shelby.

Your human disguise is quite believable. Maybe even better than my own, Klingon.

I had a teacher way back when who also was a Death March survivor. He shared his hatred for all things Japanese quite openly and who could blame him after going through such a hell and surviving?

In sixth grade my English Teacher was a Marine. He fought on Iwo Jima and took a bayonet. He didn't speak badly of the Japanese, But if a student of asian descent was in the room, you could tell he was uncomfortable. But he taught everyone equally. GP

My barber for most of my childhood was a Bataan Death March survivor. He never talked to me about it, but he told my father quite a bit, probably because he was also a vet.

I never noticed he had any problem with Asians, which would have made his life pretty miserable. I grew up in a town that now has the largest percentage Asian population of any city in the US. As of the last census the town is 67% Asian, it was about 50-60% then.

Madison Wisconsin?

Oops, that's not near Portland. I absolutely adore Bend, by the way.

I've been in that crazy bookstore in Portland, too. Awesome! You expect to run into Indiana Jones, perhaps by falling through the floorboards into a secret chamber.

I didn't grow up in Portland and Madison is only 7.4% Asian. My home town is Monterey Park, CA. Monterey Park is well known among Asians. When I was in Singapore I met people who knew all about it, but even most Angelenos had no idea where is was.

Looking back on it, it was probably an odd place to grow up compared to most people. But it never occurred to me until I moved away. I hate LA, but it was the climate and the traffic that bugged me the most. The ethnic mix was not much of a problem.

The most important question is, how is the Hot Braised Fish there? I could be convinced to drive all that way for good HBF. The Pot Sticker sausage is also an issue.

In Monterey Park? The Asian food there is excellent. What I had there is the gold standard by which all other Asian food is measured.

I never had hot braised fish, but I'm sure it was excellent. All other Asian food I had there was.
