Ok, so in the design screen, you can set the scale of the ship image as a scale of the default based on design.

However, I want something that works like this:

For all escorts, min scale is 0.75, max scale is 1.5. Then when you make them different sizes in terms of components, the game figures out the proper scaling based on the min and max numbers. So based on this, frigates could have a min scale of 1 and a max scale of 2.25 or something and so on and so forth. This leads to ship types that are different sizes based on the class.

This would mostly be a "taste" thing that helps differentiate between frigates, destroyers, cruisers, blah blah in terms of aesthetics.

Is there some way to do that now? If not, is this possible for future patches?

what i would like to see really, is a slider in the menu for scale.
So instead of setting a scale for each individual ship (which would only work for your own 'team') you can set the scale for the entire map.
imagine if a large space station was 1/4 the size of a planet, a fighter / frigate size was teeny and a capital ship was even larger than a space station...

i played around with scale, and 95% was my go to thing.. but then i looked at the job of going through every file / design template to actually realise my idea and decided to blow soap bubbles at my daughter, it seemed a better usage of my time.

however a slider would help me fill both roles :)
