Well the title says it all.
Say I were a new player learning WitP AE. Should I run the game as the latest beta build or should I use the latest official patch?

And what if I wanted to start a PBEM?

Welcome to the game.

Both. Upgrade to the latest official patch and then do the beta. We will probably never get another official beta but we do have some devs around that keep working on the game for us. They do it for free too. The betas are stable and good also.

PBEM will depend on what you and your opponent want to run.

Are you a AFB (Allied Fan Boy) or JFB (Japanese Fan Boy)?

Welcome to the game. I'm sure you'll have a fine time here. In my opinion, either the latest official patch or the latest beta will give you a good taste of the game. But it has been by experience that the betas are the best way to go. The betas contain relatively small adjustments to the game code but enhance considerably the user interface to allow player options not available in the official version. As the prior poster mentioned, the betas are created by an original developer of the game (Michaelm in the tech forum) and are as reliable as the latest official patch.

The point should be made that Michael is responsive to player feedback and as I understand is not employed by Matrix Games to do what he's been doing. Try not to bother him with trivial matters, and thank him profusely when he takes a look at your issue. I, for instance, stand ready to provide him an entire hareem of succulent female gorns for the efforts he's made. I think he's kind of a monk, not interested in such offers.

By all means latest beta. It contains UI improvements as well as an uncountable number of small bugfixes.

You do not need to upgrade continuousely - but this is easily done in single player mode.

When playing PBEM I would recommend to start with the most recent beta, and stick to this version for longer periods of time. Upgrade only when you feel the ammount of changes in the betas is sufficient.

For example, I started a new PBEM 3 months ago and we do not plan to upgrade again in 2014, except if I note something really important added to the betas. Usually this does not happen, it is just small improvements accumulating until a threshold is reached that justifies the hassle of upgrading.

Sound advice. Thank you all.
So eventhough the beta's aren't official, they are regarded as such by this community. I have loaded the latest beta and its running great.
One thing that is a pitty is that my laptop screen runs at 1366x768 preventing me to enable widescreen properly (according to the readme the y-value needs to be higher than 768), but that's only a minor thing and I believe this is to prevent skewed images.

No onwards to learning this monster. :)

Do as you will, but my experience has been most satisfactory by avoiding the betas and using only the latest official patches. There are myriad reasons for doing so, most of which revolve around continuity of experience. The betas can change some important aspects of the game-for better or worse-in mid-game. Contrary to some opinions, this can result in frustration whilest trying to suss all such changes to various 'models' that the beta attempts to do / undo with each iterative patch. My opinion is to 'leave it alone' at the level of the latest official patch and forego some of the improvements in the beta. YMMV.

I am running full screen 1366x768 on my laptop and it works perfect.

Below are the switches I use:
-skipVideo -archive -deepColor -px1366 -py768

Running full screen 1366x768 on my laptop too, full screen. No problem.

This runs fine on my HP laptop also. Now if I could find a solution to those darn B17s and B24s.....
