I suddenly have a huge surge of independent traders arriving at my homeworld (around 30 on the screen right now) and they've taken my private sector down from a cashflow of around 100k to -100k in a few minutes. And they keep on coming, around 1 per second. This means I can't build any new mining bases etc.

Is this something to do with a smuggling mission and if so, can I put a stop to it?

Did you put an order for a particular resource with smugglers?

No, just a general smuggling mission. I just put it on 4x to see what would happen and the smuggling mission ended, but the ships are still swarming in. I can barely see my homeworld with the masses of traders there now. The planet also has plenty of every resource and the private sector is now down to -200k.

Looks like another game I'll have to abandon :(

Btw, this was my first game with the June 13th patch.

Smuggling missions are carried out by pirates, not independents I believe.

That being said, indie ships still pay a fee at your starports, and give you resources; they shouldn't be bad. I frequently get deluged with indies in the early game and it only helps. Is there anything else out of the ordinary?

If pirates carry out smuggling missions, then this wasn't due to the smuggling contract. Besides, that's ended now and the independents are still flooding in.

I've never seen this many, they're appearing at an alarming rate. Problem is, the private sector is so heavily bankrupt now that I won't be able to build new bases for a very long time and I'm still in the early stages when I need them.

Nothing else out of the ordinary, it was a standard game up until then, not even encountered any other races yet.

Maybe your colony was built on an ancient Atuuk burial ground?

Seriously though, the indies shouldn't be bankrupting you,it just doesn't work like that, there must be something else. Anything. Tax rates too high? Bugged construction?

Taxes are normal and I'm not seeing anything strange in construction. There were a couple of small freighters sitting around at the star port, but nothing else. The only strange thing was the very large number of independents. I've never seen nearly that many, I've seen 4 or 5 at once but we're talking 30+ at a time. If the private sector is buying from them, that would explain the plummeting cashflow?

I've been playing since the first DW btw, so I'm fairly familiar with the game. This was very standard and nothing odd is happening. But that many independents just isn't normal and presumably whenever one appears, it's to sell something? In which case, with several per minute unloading at my starport, that would explain it?

My current game actually had me start in-between 5 indie colonies, and I also had a great flood of phallus-shaped spaceships bringing me stuff. The thing is, that many traders give you money with tariffs, actually making you money, and give you more resources, lowering purchase costs and maintenance. Also, the exchange of resources is two ways, only very rarely will trade favour one participant over the other.

You know all this, but honestly you're probably suffering from a bug. Load an auto save or nuke the save from orbit. You're starting, it's not a big deal.

Wow, I'm so unhelpful.

I wasn't actually sure what the independents did. My assumption was that they're only bringing resources in, therefore costing you money, although I understand that long-term, that might mean cheaper resources. I've read somewhere in the manual that you do actually sell excess resources too? If that's true, who takes them, the independents or your own freighters?

I've never seen anything like this, it certainly looks like a bug. It's the new .53 update that I just downloaded today... thinking about it, it was from a saved game from the previous patch, does it cause problems when loading from a previous patch?

I've also noticed that it keeps resetting policies etc every patch which is a bit annoying.

Loading from previous versions into updated ones is pretty much a recipe for disaster. Ever play Skyrim? A mod made for the game at release loaded in the current build would crash and burn, and it's the case for every other game I've played. Bad Farflamex! Bad!

Indie ships deliver their colony's resources to empires and pirates in exchange for other goods which they need, and they pay a hundred credits or so in tariffs whenever they do. They will actually reserve some resources you have in abundance before they arrive for this very reason.

Ah yeah, guess it was going between patches that caused the problem. With so many patches right now, maybe I should turn off auto-updates so that I can complete a previous game first.

Oh well, learnt something about the independents. So in general, indies are good news? I always assumed they were good.

Pirate smugglers look like independents too if you don't have good enough scanner tech. If you had a mission where they all started heading towards your planet and then you cancel they might still turn up and just sit around until they get new missions.

Nah they were warping in, unloading stuff and warping back out at a huge cost to my private sector. I assume they were selling me resources. But I'm hoping it was a bug due to loading in a save from the previous patch.

Out of interest, what exactly do the indies do? I assume they're selling you stuff, but do they actually buy spare resources from you? Just wondering, if you have e.g 5 sources of steel and find another high-steel resource planet in a good place, is it worth mining it, just to sell the extra steel? I know steel is a bad example since it's never worth much, but can it pay to have an excess of resources?

While I don't overdo Mining Station spam, I have not (I don't think so, anyway) suffered from having many multiple sources of resources. Let's me ride out a major (or multiple) enemy taking down a lot of my infrastructure in a war. I can't comment on the selling aspect, out of ignorance (never studied that).

I am quite sure that if your capital cargo, you will see lots of stuff reserved by pirate factions. At least somewhat early in the game. That are the independents (also known as pirates) buying from you.
