I have just observed odd behaviour in my Pre-Warp start (Custom game Standard Empire) when the first pirate appears (DWU 1.9.5.2).

Knowing that the price for protection is higher once under attack, as soon as I got the message new pirate contact, before they started attacking my new base, I made diplomatic contact and agreed a protection agreement (~200 credit from memory). Protection was accepted (protection for 6 month pop-up).

A few seconds later I got the 'You are being attacked' message and the 'first' pirate warning asking for protection (~350 credits).

A bit grumpily I accepted their new offer of protection, but the dialogue then popped saying that I already had a protection agreement for 6 months ..... whereupon the Pirate Escort annihilated my unprotected space port and raided the planet.

.. Double grump ..

Cracking game though.

Got the same response from first pirate meeting too. Looks like first pirate meeting/attack is scripted and they will do it regardless of current agreements.
