Japanese Home Islands: US patrol sub (SS Searaven) sunk near Kyushu after multiple attacks by Ki-49 Helen air patrols - three entries in the 1/19 Operations report showing Ki-49 Helen air attacks on SS Searaven off Nagoya (hex location 103, 61).


Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – no Jap TF, 85 aircraft (all fighters), 12 Jap LCU, refinery 96(105), light industry 9(32).


Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) – no information on Jap planes in Magwe, oil production 115(186), refinery 97(4), 14 Jap LCU (+1 from last report). A 1/19 Sigint entry reports Jap 5 Air Defense AA Rgt is now located in Magwe, this LCU transferred from the Japanese Home Islands (previous location in Tokyo as of 4/26/43).

RAF 2E bombers hit Magwe airfield in a night raid. Some runway hits but no report of damage. Two Jap planes destroyed on the ground (Intelligence screens and AAR below match on number of planes but not plane type). Allied plane losses include 3 RAF Blenheim IV (2 flak, 1 ops) and one Wellington Ic (cause unknown). Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

India: Allied 4E bombers in this theatre have been grounded, several squadrons for plane upgrades, others to recover damaged planes. I’m estimating the same or similar circumstances that Erkki and I discussed several days ago are also occurring with Allied 4E bomber squadrons in India. One RAF 4E squadron in the process of upgrading planes from Liberator II to Liberator B.III (the Liberator II going out of front-line service) plus two USAAF 4E squadrons upgrading from B-17E Fortress to B-24D Liberators (B-24D planes drawn from inventory freed up in the South/SW Pacific 4E bomber upgrades of a few days ago). It’s likely that 1 or 2 USAAF squadrons in India will retain the B-17E in front-line operations as there aren’t sufficient numbers of B-24D planes to upgrade all B-17E squadrons. At the moment, my priority for deploying newer Allied plane types remains with the Pacific theatres – Allied plane production overall not generating a sufficient number of aircraft to support uniform equipment of plane types for all front-line air units across all theatres, thus requiring some kind of priority system for allocating planes of different types.

US Marine dive bombers launch their first naval air strike from Port Moresby. While the dive bombers’ original intended target had been the KB, this air strike will certainly do. It’s less than certain what Pillager was doing with a group of Jap PB’s in this area, but a little research in the AE ships database revealed some classes of Jap PB possess a small cargo capacity – an attempted transport mission by the Jap PB’s below a likely scenario. Four areas of comment on the last sixty days which prove beneficial for Allies.

1. The KB sorties, with the Mini KB in tow. The second week of June sees the enemy move carrier forces en masse to the central pacific south of Johnston Island. They patrol from Johnston to Baker to off the Gilberts (Tarawa/Makin in allied hands with developed airfields and three fighter/three bomber squadrons between the islands. Also B-25 doing low level work and patrol aircraft based on AVs. Nauru and Ocean also held by allies, base on Nauru with patrol and one fighter squadron). Allied carriers are at Noumea to support invasion of Solomon Islands. The enemy is convoy hunting, but fortunately for me all convoys have already moved through the area. The KB, mini KB make quick work of a supply force caught at Tarawa. 5 xAks are sunk. One escapes with DD HOBBY to Baker and then to PH. That is all the losses involving ships. The KB twice raids the Gilberts. They lose 40 A/C and one CVL in the process. The US Carriers, ENTERPRISE, WASP; LEXINGTON, SARATOGA, sortie northwest to intercept, although they are five days away. Eventually the two forces meet in the midst of severe storms in hex. WASP is slightly damaged while the other three get their air groups mauled. However, they destroy over 130 planes in the process. One hit is recorded on a CV, after two hits were recorded on a CV by the SBDs on Makin. The US Force retreats to PH to replenish. Four days later they are back (ESSEX having replaced WASP)and shoot down another 65 planes. Two CVLs are slightly damaged. The US carriers continue on to Noumea. The enemy force hits the Gilberts one more time, but it costs them a CVL (confirmed sunk). Intel has one CV sunk as well, but that is not confirmed. KB makes it way to (Truk? Home Islands??) disappearing north of the Marshalls on the last day of June.

The US Carriers replenish at Noumea and have fully operable air groups.

2. With the KB/mini KB busy elsewhere, Halsey sends raiders and engineers to the Russell Islands and Thousand Ships Bay, securing both. Development begins immediately and operational airbases are ready two weeks later. A patrol sqdn moves to the Russells. Allied eyes now reach almost to Truk.

Two weeks later, with the carriers in tow, Halsey sends five divisions to take Lunga and Tulagi.

NOTE: We have discussed the best way to assault beaches with the ships available. The advice is 40 ships per division will ensure a quick debarkation. Here is how it went.

A. 1st USMC Div, 1st USMC Tank Bn, and an Engineer go on an assault task force made up of APAs, LSI(L)s, AKAs, and LSTs, roughly 40 ships. This force discharges all troops in one day! The equipment and supplies 64K worth, take four more days. 5 days all told, force retires to Noumea.

B. 43rd Inf Div, 37th Inf Div, two tank battalions, and two more Engineers, go on a 65 ship task force of APs, AKs, and LSTs. It takes two days to discharge all the troops, 85% on day one, and another 5 days to offload the equipment and supplies. It retires to Noumea.

C. 40th Inf Div (originally tasked for Lunga is diverted to Tulagi), 27th Inf Div, 1st USMC Para Bn, and Engineers, load on 80 xAPs, xAKs, and LSTs. IT TAKES SEVEN (7) DAYS TO DISCHARGE THE TROOPS AND IT IS STILL DISCHARGING EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES. To make matters worse, 40th Inf only gets 52% of AV to the beach.

RESULTS: Lunga is taken in three days dispite a level 6 fortification. Tulagi is taken in five days after completion of troop offload. The task force is still offloading.

D. The first assault TF has made it to Noumea, embarked several HQs and aviation assets and is returning. The three divisions and tank battalions on Lunga are at 95% strength. the 27th is at 85% strength and the 40th is at 58% strength. The para battalion is completely exhausted, reduced to zero AV from 30 due to combat.

3. Meanwhile the allies launch a four division assault on Cox's Bazaar and Akyab, taking both in a three week campaign. Planes are flown in and supplies shipped in. The enemy is in retreat to Prome. A second assault on Katha surprises the enemy and Katha is taken with token resistance. A British Division chases the survivors toward Shwebo. All the available 33rd Corps, 14th Corps, and 3rd Special Force units rush to Myitkyina. They are gathering around the base. The enemy 5th division is trying to get through the Jungle across from Katha to reinforce, but I am bombing the bejeebers out of it, slowing its progress. My guys will get to Myitkyina first with four brigades and an armor unit. The Chindits are at Katha, preparing to cut in behind the 5th division to cut off its supply and retreat.

NOTE: Since I am not pulling pilots out of squadrons anymore (except the training squadrons on the west coast), RAF No. 17 Squadron has over 800 kills with nine pilots of 99 Exp. Two pilots are the tops, one with 63 kills and the other with 57. Most of these guys are well over 30 kills. This sqdn did this in Hurricanes Type IIb. It just upgraded to type IIc. They spent the war at Kaylemo until transferring to Katha with their new planes.

4. YORKTOWN II (Having swapped their air group for the original Yorktown air group which is trained up), WASP (just out of drydock), and INDEPENDENCE, make up a new carrier division. They are at PH. LEXINGTON II, COWPENS, and BELLAU WOOD, make up another carrier division. It is enroute to PH from the canal zone. The Yorktown II air group is at PH training up.

Things are looking up as all the new construction arrives. As best I can determine, the enemy has lost two CVs, perhaps a third, though heavily damaged is more likely, and one CVL. I have lost two CVs, Yorktown and Hornet. The new Hornet will arrive in February 44. Her air group did not survive, although I purchased its return, it has yet to return. I am currently transferring 130 assault ships to SWPAC from the west coast. It is time to get Mac into the war. Finally, the Marshalls assault group is ready to go at PH. It is waiting for the carriers to return from the south Pacific. It may be some time yet before that happens.

What's equally important as how many transport ships in an Amphibious TF is the ship type(s) being used to load assault troops and other cargo to be landed. (A), (B), and (C) above nicely illustrate the effect of unloading rates for different ship types in an amphibious landing. Also refer to Over the Beach ship unloading rates in section 6.3.3.3.2.1 (page 128) in the AE game manual.

Ships used in (A) above were entirely from ship types with the fastest unloading rates (APA, AKA, landing ships that go onto the beach).
Ships used in (C) above included ship types with the slowest unloading rates (xAK, xAP).
The amphibious TF in (B) somewhere in between.

An additional question I could have here is cargo capacity of the ships used, especially xAP and xAK that unload at the slowest rate. A large xAP with twice the cargo capacity of a smaller xAP will take twice as long (if not more) to unload. I've used very few (usually no) xAK in an amphibious TF and only medium to small xAP. Whatever advantage in the higher cargo capacity of a larger xAP is cancelled out (if not worse) during an amphibious landing by its increased time of unloading. Large xAP may be the way to ship a division across the Pacific from the mainland US but a liability during an amphibious landing. Amphibious landings are a case where smaller (ship size) is often better.

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 332K, fuel 27K.

No reported aircraft losses this game turn over New Guinea for either side.

Allied 2E ground attack and 4E bomber squadrons are stood down – 2E air units to recover planes/rest pilots from recent night bombing over Lae, 4E squadrons gradually repairing planes “spontaneously” damaged on the ground while stood down. Recovery of 4E planes is proceeding well but expected to take some days to complete for some air units (especially recent B-24D to B-24J upgrades). Erkki’s posting a few days ago on this subject sheds some light on the 4E bomber problem, but it also occurred at the same time as Pillager and I did two AE beta upgrades. There are factors I can definitely exclude (supply, aviation support, air HQ proximity) in my scenario but no conclusive evidence pointing to anything in particular.

Flight ops orders for USAAF 2E skip bombers have been reset (specifically range) to cover sea areas from Port Moresby up to but excluding Rabaul – Rabaul being 11 hexes from Port Moresby, attack range of skip bomber squadrons set to 10. This setting of orders intended to focus naval attack ops against Japanese shipping moving S or SW from Rabaul or shipping entering the Bismarck Sea area (enroute to Lae or Buna). Ship attacks on targets in Rabaul are inviting but a distraction not serving immediate Allied priorities in SW Pacific and certainly not justifying recent B-25 plane losses over Rabaul.

Allied fighter sweeps over Jap airfields at Buna and Lae are planned to continue on a scale consistent with simultaneously providing CAP fighter coverage on Port Moresby itself. Dispatching fighter sweeps by Allied planes over Lae/Buna will likely become the primary means of inflicting attrition on Japanese LBA operating in New Guinea.

Overall priority in SW Pacific theatre is shifting from consolidation of Port Moresby to reduction of Japanese bases at Lae and Buna. No decision at this time as whether Lae or Buna is the initial target – but given known Jap LCU garrison sizes at Lae (11 LCU) and Buna (23 LCU), a simultaneous attack on both Lae and Buna is already eliminated. I’m not a fan of siege warfare but Pillager has simply too much in Lae and Buna to ignore the two bases – elimination being a more effective solution than committing Allied forces (that could better be used elsewhere) to keep them bottled up. My estimate is reduction of Buna and Lae will likely be a process rather than an assault – starve and bomb, then mop up what’s left. A by-product is elimination of the 30+ Jap LCU in Lae and Buna likely takes them completely and permanently out of this campaign. My priority as set for Allied naval air strike priorities in New Guinea intended to have two functions – (1) eliminate movement of supply/reinforcements to Jap positions in Lae and Buna, and (2) prevent any effective evacuation of Jap LCU from either Lae or Buna. I’m beginning to estimate Pillager may consider (if not do) evacuation of Japanese forces from forward positions immediately in front of an Allied advance where an evacuation allows possibility of a Japanese advantage elsewhere – the unopposed Allied landing at Noumea an example.

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 500K supply and 103K fuel on hand.

Main body of transport convoy WP-128 arrives in Auckland with 6 DD, 31 transports. Cargo aboard the main body of WP-128 includes 160K supply and 56K fuel, no LCU or air units. DD arriving with WP-128 will remain in Auckland for employment in the combined South/SW Pacific operations area. A detachment of ships from WP-128 is now enroute to Noumea to deliver cargo there.

US 40th Infantry Division arriving in New Zealand after being relieved from defensive garrison at Pago Pago. 40 Division is the last front-line US combat division LCU yet to upgrade from 1941-42 TOE, this upgrade scheduled to occur immediately. It’s a question as to whether the division will receive 1943 or 44 squads/equipment and how quickly this occurs – likely a matter of how AE game mechanics handle things based on current date in the campaign and possibly available inventory in the replacement pools. A 1944 TOE upgrade of 40 Division could take some amount of time as 1944 USA infantry squads aren’t currently available in sufficient numbers to upgrade the entire division at once. In any event, upgrading of 40 Division is not an urgent priority and can be allowed to proceed at its own pace. Plans for 40 Division are to include it in future Allied offensive operations once upgrade is complete and the division is otherwise ready.

Construction activity to expand base facilities at Koumac and La Foa well underway at both locations. Airfield size at Koumac now approaching 5(7) – plans are to expand the airfield to a maximum size 9 plus a fully expanded size 4(1) port. Koumac airfield is a projected launching point for 4E bomber operations directed at the complex of Japanese bases Pillager has established in the Tulagi/Guadalcanal area. Planned base expansion at La Foa will likely include only port facilities to their maximum 3(0) size. La Foa is intended as an alternate loading/unloading site for Allied ships at New Caledonia plus an extra small anchorage to hide ships as needed.

Your observation is exactly the point I was trying to make. I was well aware the "x" type ships unload at the lowest rate and that size hurts unloading. I could have waited on the Tulagi assault for the faster unloading ships to become available. As it was, it worked out even with the delayed unloading. However, it is clear to me that using "x" types for anything other than a minor assault, ie, Raider size unit or Engr, is not advisable. The main object is to get the assault force on the beach with the least delay. The APA types are what to use, the AP types next. Anything else takes too long.

The problem with the unload of the 40th Div, in my opinion, had more to do with preparation for Lunga and the last minute diversion to Tulagi, rather than the ships involved, although both contributed to the poor unload.

Your example is a very well conceived illustration on amphibious transport operations. I'm not exactly sure how or whether LCU preparation affects unloading rates (it does affect other areas), I'll likely encounter that issue at some point. 100-day prep times for amphibious assaults can't always be done.

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 521K supply and 109K fuel on hand, small quantities of supply/ fuel being pushed overland from Noumea to La Foa and Koumac bases. Airfield size at Koumac increased to 6(7), port size at La Foa now 1(0).

Transport convoy WP-128A (9 ships) arrives at Noumea from the mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-128A includes 18K supply and 87K fuel, no LCU or air units. A small minesweeping TF (4 AMc) arrived at Noumea from New Zealand to operate local patrol in Noumea base hex.

Main body of transport convoy WP-132 and one of two detachments from the convoy (WP-132B) arrive at destinations in the South Pacific theatre area. Convoy WP-132B (8 ships) arrived in Suva with 50K supply and 4K fuel cargo, no air units or LCU. Main body of convoy WP-132 (21 ships) arrived in Auckland with 129K supply and 9500 fuel cargo aboard, no LCU or air units. The remaining detachment of WP-132 (WP-132A) is still enroute to Noumea. Priority of transport shipping leaving the US west coast with WP convoys is being maintained to some degree in the South Pacific area (up to now the main destination of these convoys) – a larger proportion of WP convoys diverted to a buildup in the Central Pacific area. Regardless of destination, an emphasis to push maximum quantities of cargo out of the mainland US on the most aggressive possible schedule continues.

Some activity is underway to collect and consolidate some Allied LCU now located at selected small rear-area bases in the South Pacific theatre area, mainly engineer and support units plus some combat LCU. Plans are to have these LCU more readily available for future front-line employment as/where needed. LCU upgrade of US 40th Infantry Division to 1943 or 44 TOE now underway in New Zealand, the division already prepping for a future assault objective.

Japanese Home Islands: US patrol sub off Honshu intercepts a Jap carrier TF. SS Halibut did not maintain contact with the Jap TF (carrier TF now undetected) - the sub moving in transit back to Pearl Harbor for repair after damage from air attack last game turn. I’m estimating it’s likely the Jap carrier TF in this action is operating independently from the rest of KB. CV Ikoma is likely a new or recent addition to Pillager’s KB force. Scheduled arrival date for CV Ikoma (per the AE editor) is 6/45, making Pillager’s completion of this ship approximately 18 months ahead of schedule (not a great deal of surprise). AAR follows.

A possibly interesting “side note” to this action is related to the number of Japanese carrier ships Pillager probably has in operation at this point in the campaign. On one side of the equation is the number of operating Japanese flight decks, on the other side is the number of Jap planes and pilots needed to keep these carriers fully operational. It’s likely in this situation a properly conducted campaign of IJN plane and pilot attrition could take the KB out of action as effectively as sinking the carrier ships themselves – this illustrated historically later in 1944 off Cape Engano (Philippines) during the Leyte actions. Yet another factor in play is the logistics support required (fuel, supply, base capacity) for Pillager to effectively operate the KB at its present size, especially in a front-line theatre area. Pillager could have thousands of fuel and supply points on hand to run the KB in the South/SW Pacific, his KB at its (probable) current size quickly exhausting those assets. A large intact KB in 1944 may be as much a liability as an advantage (it’s one thing to have a large carrier fleet, another to operate it).

Japanese TF including PB carrying LCU elements as cargo attacked by US Marine dive bombers off Gasmata. This action the third naval air strike in 5 days on similar Jap TF’s in the Solomon Sea area off the south coast of New Britain, all involving Jap TF with compositions similar to that in the AAR below. A pattern could be emerging here – two of the three Jap TF engaged in these air strikes were moving eastbound (away from New Guinea) with both TF carrying LCU elements as cargo. Pillager may be attempting some form of evacuation of LCU elements from Buna or Lae. Given the small cargo capacities of Jap PB and other ships encountered in the air strikes, the quantity of LCU elements being moved in these TF is certainly not large. India: Some adjustments now underway with Allied air units performing aerial recon over targets in Burma (primarily Rangoon & Magwe). Until this point in the campaign I have been relying entirely on RAF recon air units for missions over Burma, this no longer a feasible option as evident from the reduced levels of reporting on Japanese activity at Rangoon and Magwe.

Problems with RAF air recon is two-fold – (1) a general shortage of British recon planes, and (2) many British recon plane types not having sufficient range to reach desired mission targets in Burma. Until now this has been worked around with a mixed degree of success but alternative means to perform aerial recon over Burma is becoming more necessary.

Resources to resolve this situation are now available with the presence of two USAAF recon air units now available in the India/Burma theatre area. Currently both USAAF recon squadrons are in rear-areas and engaged in pilot training to generate a reserve pool of trained recon pilots for general USAAF recon operations across all theatres. The reserve pool of USAAF recon pilots remains smaller than desired (47 fully trained replacement pilots now available in the pool) but at a point where I’m not anticipating any immediate or short-term crisis with this pilot reserve provided some level of recon pilot training (for USAAF) continues.

Conversion of one USAAF recon air unit in theatre from pilot training to front-line operations has started– implementation of this requiring replacement of partially trained pilots now in the squadron with fully-trained recon pilots ready for front-line missions, plus upgrade of the squadron’s plane type. Aircraft type planned for use in this squadron is the F-5A Lightning, this type with drop tanks available and sufficient range to cover desired recon targets within Burma. Estimated time for this to occur is 10-15 days. RAF recon air units are planned to remain in front-line service to the extent where suitable aircraft types and numbers of planes are available.

It’s possible that LCU elements reported lost aboard Jap PB sunk off Gasmata could be from an unidentified Jap LCU Pillager was evacuating from Buna.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – airfield damage 3, 82 aircraft (all fighters), 11 Jap LCU, 4 Jap TF (36 ships total, all barges or small ship types).


Tackling the “unsinkable” I-31. The sub was reported hit multiple times and sunk on 1/26 in an action with US surface ASW off Port Moresby, however, the 1/26 action may have been a synch bug as it repeated on 1/27 in similar fashion. The AAR below is the “1/28 game turn edition” of the battle.
