I wanted to start this outside of John3's thread.

I know that the CAV's are being viewed as failures, but what if they aren't from the Wests point of view? I started thinking that the British would find that Swordfish are good for scouts and putting bombs on them makes it easier to take off of the CAV. You would now have a colonial style cruiser armed with 6-12 patrol planes that can not only scout for surface craft but submarines. The 8" guns can keep raiders honest I think it would be a win.

The US does not have a biplane like the swordfish that I am aware of but they might see that using the CAV as a patrol ship they could modify an existing biplane to fill the role.

Just some random thoughts.

Thanks

I agree with Oldman. They are scout ships or escorts.  They can use their planes to find raiders or subs and do some damage to them.  If needed they can use their guns to protect.  This is more of a convoy escort and maybe a CS style ship (maybe).

+1 to this when thinking about the Allied CAVs. Japan kept CS in use, but the Allies did not. They could be seen as scout cruisers with self-defense capabilities.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with you two. Having Charlotte and Jacksonville attached to a CV TF would really add a bit of air search capability as well as some CAP potential. Wouldn't be much but it be helpful.
