Hi,

I am looking for something to "cut my teeth" on as far as a good strategy games goes. I am considering either
Airborne Assault: Conquest of the Aegean
Gary Gigspy's World at War
Gary Gigspy's War in the East
Korsun Pocket

Are these a good point to start at?

I played the Axis and Allies board game many years ago and enjoyed it. So, maybe something like that? But, I am open to anything.

IMO only Korsun Pocket would be a good place to start out of the games you have listed. You might want to take a look at Battle Academy, which I think would be ideal. Hope this helps.

Conflict of Heroes is easy to pick up, and fun to. You will find details of how both these games play on You Tube. I am sure you will get more suggestions.

Maybe Panzer Corps should be considered. It is fairly easy to get into and it is sold at a 50% discount for the rest of this week.

My Pick: Panzer Command. I'm sure there are others who would recommend it too. I can HARDLY think of anyone who wouldn't.

Hi Pariah,

You will receive a lot of different answers to that question.

Here are 2 full games you can download for free.

Steel Panthers at Shrapnel Games

Squad Battles Grenada at JohnTiller Games

There are also a lot of demos available to try. You may want to consider what scale you like as well.

Well you say you are a newcomer to wargaming.

This might help you in your decision.

Here is how the old Avalon Hill would rate these games with numbers with a 10 being considered very serious and difficult.

Airborne Assault: Conquest of the Aegean........ this title is easily a 7 at the minimum.
Gary Gigspy's World at War........ this title is likely a 5-6 and could be considered a hard core version of Axis and Allies.
Gary Gigspy's War in the East........ on a scale of 1-10 this title is basically a 12, and it is not wise to suggest this to a new comer.
Korsun Pocket..........this title is likely a 7 and if you enjoy it, the series has a common feel so the interface is learn it once oriented.

Some suggestions.

Battle Academy is squad and individual vehicle level, has an interface a child can learn, but is like playing chess, ie few moves and unforgiving of bad moves. Superb multiplayer environment.

Panzer Corp is basically a modernized Panzer General, if you remember that one this is the grown up version. More polish, same sort of game.

Strategic Command 1 is grand strategy, and not going to strain your brain learning how to play, but is still a serious gamer's wargame.

Conflict of Heroes is my current will satisfy almost any wargamer suggestion.

Panzer Corps is currently in the spotlight for being on sale. So if you like it, pick soon :)

Advanced Tactics is an under appreciated gem. You want to make sure to look at this one closely.

Wow, this may be one of the most helpful and active forums I have ever been on.
Many ideas to choose from!
I think I am going to pick from:
Korsun Pocket
Panzer Corps
Advanced Tactics Gold

I thought I was playing strategy games before with titles like Rome: Total War or Empire Earth 2. I found out I do not like games that I have coined "click mobs". Where you just highlight all your guys and right click everything in sight. It got pretty boring quickly.

If you enjoy the 'feel' of non turn type, but want some credible and realistic in the process, then the Panther Games titles are worth keeping mind for later.

They punish unwise rapid mouse clicking behaviour as they enforce a command and control effect through a delayed response. So when you tell a unit to initiate an action, you have to then let it do it in its own time.

I really do not mind turn based games at all. I did however try Hearts of Iron 3 and Darkest Hour and did not really enjoy the "paused real time action" I just couldn't get the hang of it. Was I doing too much? Not enough? How fast should the game speed be? Very frustrating!

For sure Panzer Corps is a good start. Easy to learn and extremely funny.

Conflict of Heroes, Battle Academy, Panzer Corps and Advanced Tactics are all good choices. They are very different from each other, though, so take a careful look at what each title offers.

I'd stay away from Korsun Pocket; there are easier games to get to grips with, and it's pretty ancient now. If you want an Eastern Front title I'd suggest Unity of Command or Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue. War in the East is the gold standard title, but not really a beginners game.

I am pretty sure I am going to check out Panzer Corps. Is there a demo? (I guess I should just Google that on my own)
I would like to eventually get into a really tough and complex game. Are the any games you (as an experienced player) play and enjoy today that I could look to work up to?

War in the Pacific: Admirals edition. You may never need another game.

Again, though, it's a choice between very different games depending on your preference. Have a browse at War in the East, Command Ops and Command (the last two not being the same thing!)

Yes, I think there´s a Panzer Corps demo. The game is also available in Steam.

If you like MP games try Advanced Tactics Gold or Combat Mission.
If you prefer single player games (brilliant AI) try Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm

Should I buy Panzer Corps on Steam or via Matrix direct?
Is there any difference?

Yeah, Hearts of Iron is really not for the new to the genre. You would probably like "Making History I & II as those are like HOI but turn based. You can take all the time you want.

NEVER buy anything on Steam from Slitherine Group first. Always buy from the Matrix Games or the Slitherine store first. Because you are going to get a free Steam key that way where as, if you buy direct from Steam, you never get the much better installer file plus serial option that never requires any connection with Steam.

Steam is an ok enough service but it isn't superior to the way Slitherine Groups sells the program. And that is a cold hard fact.

If you want to jump into a game that will give you access to scores of games, The Operational Art of War III is able to look like you bought almost every board game wargame ever made. It is so many games in one program.

Except the "main" important one: Squad Leader or Advanced Squad Leader.

So, the Making History games are pretty good?

I was looking at them. It is so hard to pick!

I am playing Panzer Corps (demo) right now. I really like the feel of it. I think it is a great place to start.

At the moment Panzer Corps has no mods availables in steam (workshop), however in the future things can change. The game is a bit cheaper in Matrix. I´m not sure if it´s possible to install mods in the steam version. I would buy the Matrix version.

Will do.

I would rather give my money to Matrix than Steam anyway

Thank you everyone for your recommendations.

Now if I get good at Panzer Corps.... Are there any dedicated groups or events online that you would recommend? Or do people even do that?

Yeah, Steam get 30% of the money. Buy direct and you can get a Steam key anyway if you register with Slitherine.

Oh now wait just a minute. Didn't you know about our "consultation" fees? Yes, now that you have selected you have to buy each one of us a game or our choice. I'll take Mark Walkers Heroes of Stalingrad thank you very much.

I think you should take that up with Matrix!
I think some extra loyalty points or a discount code is deserved for everyone who recommended Panzer Corps to me....
