...than the allied invasion ships head towards shores.

The japanese coastal artillery delivers some punch but the losses are not bad considering. Have to say love those old battlewagons that were left flotating initially when my opponent choose not to attack Pearl Harbour.

After two days of barrage the situation is following with some more troops unloading next turn...

Tinian (AV) = Japan: 325 Allied: 1377
Saipan (AV) = Japan: 601 Allied: 2034
Guam (AV) = Japan: 414 Allied: 1712
Rota (AV) = Japan: 236 Allied: 278

The distruption levels are ok but waiting for the last troops to land before launching ground assaults.

Elsewhere quiet but commonwealth troops are ordered to attack enemy lines near Prome next turn.

Sub kills: PB Uruboko Maru

Thanks Jocke! Doing my best to give my opponent headaches. Now we just need to secure Marianas and Burma fronts.

September 18th - 22nd 1943

The battles rage at Marianas and there are good news to report.

Allied troops have secured both Guam and Tinian. The casualty levels are not bad considering.

There are immediate action to get both of these bases build up and operational.

The enemy have lost 16th division and 53rd division defending these bases.

At Saipan there have been heavy fighting all around and japanese still hold the base. However we are gaining the upper hand here so it should fall within next couple of turns.

Allied forces landed at Rota are in no hurry to conduct offensives since this the secondary objective in operation Viking.

Japanese did bring a lot of coastal guns and this has taken a toll of landing vessels for sure. However all the important APA's and other specialized ships are unhurt.

The bad news of the turn comes from Toungoo where commonwealth ground offensive fails with bad number of casualties. We will continue to work here and hope to wrap this up soon.

Allied engineers have begin the build up at Guam and Tinian. Both of these bases will be fully operational soon enough.

The ground battles at Saipan and Rota still continue.

The Saipan defenders AV numbers is down around 300 so the grind should be over soon enough. The japanese AV numbers at Rota are down to around 150.

There are no signs of IJN battleship fleet nor remaining carriers. I think he made the right choice not to intervene here with those assets.

Meanwhile in Burma the allied push towards Rangoon will continue shortly. I doubt he can hold his defensive line here.

Sub kills: xAK Nasusan Maru, xAK Nittei Maru and CL Abukuma and xAK Azuchi Maru.

September 30th - October 7th 1943

The october 7th marked the date that japanese defenses collapsed at Saipan. Those units held the island for to weeks but simply where overwhelmed by brute force.

This also marks the end of operation Viking since the main objectives were seized Guam, Tinian and Saipan.

There are still resistance at Rota and Pagan needs to be dealt with but the operation was success despite the CD gun units toll on ships.

Allied ground offensives near Prome and Rota were unsuccesfull...

The carrier CV Unryu was torpedoed near Nagoya. There are no confirmed news regarding the ships damage levels.

Allied troops have launched repeated ground offensives at Toungoo, near Prome and Rota.

All of these offensives have been unsuccesfull but the tide here is slowly but surely turning. It is not easy to push through fortified defenses at all.

In Burma RAF suffered bomber losses thus the aircampaign here is regrouping. It seems that japanese have brough around 200 fighters into this region.

I did order my carrier TF to move a bit closer to Iwo Jima region and look what we found.... Nice!

The japanese defenders at Rota have been finally wiped out. This definately took longer than expected and should have prepped more troops for it.

Oh well.. only Pagan remains at Marianas and then the whole island chain is on allied hands. The last bastion seems relatively slightly defended.

In Burma we laucnhed yet another set of ground assaults both at Toungoo and near Prome. All of these assaults were repulsed but slowly getting ahead here.

He has now moved 1st tank divison in jungles near Prome so he ain't giving this up without an fight which suits me just fine.

Elsewhere things remain quiet and preparations are ongoing for futher advances....

Allied troops have now invaded Pagan in northern Marianas. The defenders were easily swept aside and the base is now on our hands.

At Burma RAF/US bombers flew supporting raids near Prome and suffered mediocre casualties because the CAP was not sweeped properly.

It seems he is still reinforcing Burma region but this should be lost cause for him.

Elsewhere we saw some bomber and surface action at Babeldaob...

Allied bombers visited Babeldaob harbour for the fist time..

Commonwealth troops launch yet again another ground offensive at Toungoo supported by large airstrikes. This did not succeed despite the support from the skies.

Allied troops begin landings at Babeldaob. These are lead by 1st and 2nd Australian divisions and some other supporting troops.

It seems that we have 830av and Japanese have 470av in the base. My troops are fully prepped so hoping to gain upperhand soon.

The initial ground assault at Babeldaob was repulsed and it might take a bit of time before those defenders surrender.

However we had a bit of an carrier battles happening in the sealanes. I had the japanese carriers cruising nort of Luzon but it seems my intel was wrong.

Thankfully the enemy strike got a bit separated and some of his aircraft went after transports unloading at Babeldaob...

It seems that both of us had equally bad intel when carrier battle happened. I thought his carriers were north of Luzon and he only spotted my CVE TF.

If he had recon the fleet carriers than the battle would have been called off.

I don't know whether we sunk 1 CV, 1 BB and 2 CVL's but according to my opponent most of the fleet carriers will be ok.

Thus the battle continued and this time around we got some unwanted surface combat action. Both sides were just 3 hexes from each other and we ran into japanese BB TF...

...that could have gone much worse than actually happened! Time to withdraw a bit and replenish these ships.

The good news is that all of the carriers are ok but couple need little shipyard time soon.

November 27th - December 4th 1943

The stand off continues at Babeldaob. The latest allied ground offensive failed and he still has level 6 forts in place.

I'am in no hurry here so let the bombers soften these stubborn japanese a bit. They are nicely trapped there and going nowhere.

In Burma japanese fighters put up an CAP at Toungoo. This resulted to some bomber losses however this is telling to me that hitting the base is easting up his supply levels in this region.

Thus to deal with this new development I have moved more fighters into frontlines. Overall he seems to be moving more ground units into battles and that suits me just fine.

The invasion of Iwo Jima begins on december 5th with mostly New Zealand troops fully prepped for the target. The intel shows low number of defenders there but we shall see how this goes.

Sub kills: xAK Nichiryo Maru

My impression is that if the DL of an enemy base is less than 5, Allied intel usually greatly underestimates the troop count.
I think forts may also reduce the effectiveness of recon spotting.

Agreed! The recon I have for Iwo Jima is 9 thus it should be quite correct. If so he has only 2000-3000 troops stationed there and my infantry and armour should breakthrough swiftly.

One thing for sure though you never have enough long ranged recon aircraft available.

December 5th - 6th 1943

The allied recon planes photographs were solid intel. Thus the Iwo Jima is firmly in allied hands now and also means that I can secure Bonin's on my terms now.

There was just 4th South Seas Gsn defending the island. Good news indeed for the allied HQ.

Elsewhere we are moving troops and supplies around and some units are prepping.

Other good thing is that I now have my submarine bases nearer to the home islands which cuts down the travel times.

Sub kills: PB Choun Maru #8 and xAK Nagato Maru.

Iwo Jima captured 14 months earlier than RL - remarkable! Well done!

BBfanboy: Thanks for the compliment!

December 7th - 12th 1943

As previously stated my opponent is reinforcing Burma front. The japanese now have 1500av near Prome and 1700av at Toungoo.

Allied bombers took casualties previous turn but this has to be accepted. The burning of his supplies is important.

The US carriers made an raid into japanese sealanes and found some transport TF loaded with troops...

Very few combat squads on those ships, but lots of support, engineers and vehicles with some guns makes me think a base force or two.

This AAR is quite simply a depressing read.

Hat's off to your opponent for putting up the good fight.

BBfanboy: That would be my estimate as well if those losses are correct. I think those units were heading towards Burma frontlines.

... or towards Luzon region where I doubt he is "ready" yet. Than again I'am neither...

Lowpe: Definately hats off to Chris. Both of us have are "experienced" players and have had our good and bad runs.

The first PBEM game for me that teached hard lessons of the game was vs erstad (Dave) in Witp. At times it felt bad but we grinded on and thankfully so.

This will be my 5th PBEM game in late years so it is absolutely vital to have good opponents. We are not playing for points but taking things as as learning experience.

Truth is that only way to learn the game is to play it with diffrent situations at hand. Sometimes it might be "depressing" as you stated but experience is still valuable.

As for this PBEM. There are a lot of bloodbaths coming and one sloppy turn for me can cost as dearly. I have not even put an smallest dent into his aircraft assets.

He still has thousands and thousands of them around the map. To be honest very diffrent than my previous games.

One thing for sure that I cannot simply sail into Tokyo... things will get harder and harder once we continue our advance.

... but yes I have had the luck to play mostly againts very good players who are reliable as they can be!
