John 3rd and I have started a new game. RA Treaty Mod

First notices is a some new CVLs for each side and BCs.

John is a very aggresive player. Come to think about it so am I. Not sure where this thread will go, so away I go.

Dec 7th
Arizona lost at Pearl and not much damage to the fleet at Manila.
Landings of importance--Kuantan, Miri

Dec 8th--
Japanese Ships
SS I-158 sinks
SS KXII, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage do not like
CL Mauritius( fire but fightable) takes on the Kongo and Haruna at Kuantan one IJn DD on fire

DD Scout and Thanet ---Damage 3 AKs, AV Sagra Maru SUNK and DMS W-4 SUNK at Miri, LIKE

KB headed back towards Midway and Mini KB towards southern Phillippines, also 1 CVE? north of Miri

At this point will be moving at much as I can towards Suva and Nouema. The 34th combat eng is headed to Midway by airlift and will build up the base.

John will have a plan for the future so I have to believe he can be going for India, OZ, Midway, Canton-- Suva

I am using almost all of the long range bombers, PBYs on search to get as clear a picture as I can of fleet movements.

After the next day of combat will; start a complete plan of bases to build

Good luck! This will be interesting to watch. Although I've read about some of the differences in the scenario, it'll be interesting to hear your thoughts as you go on how these additions and changes alter the feel of the game for the early war Allies.

It seems a good many games have started lately with an early para-drop in a critical area; Malaya, cutting retreats to Singers; China, behind the lines at Ankang. Beware unattended bases!

Air battles over Manila and Clark Field --19 destroyed Betties and another 13 damaged one strike had 21 Betties unescorted against 20 P-40s.

Lost track of KB but reports show it near Midway.

POW and Repluse will probably engage IJN TFs near the NW corner of Boreno tomorrow.

Hong Kong first assault 1 to 2

No para drops in Malaya yet-- wonder near they are.

Dec 10 Quite. Have lost tract of the KB Mini KB. East of Borneo

No major engage with POW heading back to port. The amount of Allied cargo ships lost has been low so far. I decide to slowly release the ships. With all the search aircraft I have up I can see where all his surface fleets are. Where I see holes in coverage, off go a few more transports.

I have a few more days before I have to think about where the CVs are going.

Dec 11-15

A couple of IJN tankers hit by US subs north of the Phillippines. Canton Island falls. Astoria hit by IJN sub north of Canton.

I believe the KB has split a portion south of Midway. Midwaya level two fort plus most of the 34 combat engineers are there now. Moving subs with mines to support.

A invasion is headed to Ambon. Should meet a few US CAs plus the CL Marblehead. Mini KB is following the invasion. Maybe this will popcorn time.

Mersing landed at. Hong Kong still holds. Zeros are now flying sweep mission over Manila, I wonder why. Maybe lost a few many Bettys

Overall it is still very quite.

Dec 16-17

Well to start with after game crash we are back in the swing of things

First, is a landing should be happening in the next day. Midway has been reinforced with the 34 Combat Engineers and is at a level two. KB North is supporting the invasion and I have two separte surface fleets with CAs headed to Midway. PLus a bunch of subs with mines, but they are a couple of days out. Should have moved them sooner. I was going to put a sq of SBDs on Midway, again they are at Johnson Is now.

KB South ambush a transport TF headed to Christmas Is. Lost a couple APs , couple of AKs and 2 DMSs . TF was carrying a Marine Def Bn. The KB is northeast of Christmas IS now.

Kendari- landings there istead of Ambon. Can't really stop any of this.

Gasmata landed at with a small force.( IJN AF) Should see some float planes soon. Rabaul will be heating up real soon. A SQ of SBDs is there now with fighter support. With the KB somewhere else, I should be able to bring in enough surface combat ships to make a fight of it.

Hong Kong survived another day. Last assault was a 1-2 Maybe there will be Christmas in Hong Kong this year.

Last thing is to think thru where KB South will go. KB- South is stronger than KB North.. Is this a raid into the central Pacific. If I can find the AOs maybe I can do some damage.

Midway falls--Well new plan has to be made

KB South still between Pearl and Christmas. I have a CA now looking for a fleet train west and south of Johnston

6 BBs bombarded Rabaul. Guess John wants to Rabaul, he has little air support. With Midway fallen the KB can be back to truck in two weeks or so and down to Rabaul.

Quite in the DEI area. Dutch are a using the shovels as fast as they can. Mini KB is Southeast of Kendari, and could make the trip to Port Morsbey. I have to keep an eye on that.

All B-17 plus PBYs are now searhing with over laps in alot of areas in the Pacific. Phillippine B-17s headed to Eastern OZ

Dec 19-27

Been awhile on the update.

Christmas Island fell on the 21st. Midway and now Christmas wonder what John is up to. KB South was lurking in the area up till the 25th haven't sighted since.

Everything else was quite to the 25th.

Hong Kong on the 27th still in British hands. On the 26th the IJA advances into Singapore with 1-4 result.

Amph TF sight outside of Palembang on the 25th. 26th 4 CLs Dutch and British hold off the invasion very little sunk on either side-- but I was able to destroy 16 sqs, non combat Invasion put off for one more day as both sides withdrew. CLs to Batavia IJN back to where ever. They do come back on the 27th on make the landings

The big event is the running battle on the 26th of Kongo and Myoko vs the POW and Repluse outside of Batavia. POW is damage with about 21 float and total damage a little over 50. I believe the Myoko has been sunk Kongo hvy damage. Airstrike from Batavia after surface battle a Swordfish get a hit with a torpedo.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Oosthaven at 49,96, Range 11,000 Yards Round 1

Japanese Ships
BC Kongo, Shell hits 1

DD Hatsukaze, Shell hits 1
DD Natsushio, on fire
DD Yukikaze

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, Shell hits 1, heavy fires
BC Repulse, Shell hits 1
CL De Ruyter, Shell hits 1
DD Pope, Shell hits 1
DD Vampire, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Electra
DD Express

Day Time Surface Combat, near Oosthaven at 49,96, Range 21,000 Yards Round 2

Japanese Ships
BC Kongo, Shell hits 3, on fire
CA Myoko, Shell hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Hatsukaze, Shell hits 1
DD Natsushio, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Yukikaze
DD Murasame, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Harusame
DD Yudachi, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Shell hits 7
CL De Ruyter
DD Pope, Shell hits 3, heavy fires
DD Vampire
DD Electra, Shell hits 3, on fire

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 14
Vildebeest III x 3
139WH-3 x 6
B-339D x 8
Swordfish I x 6

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
BC Kongo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Last is the 6 BBs from Truk made a run on Rabaul, but a naval air strike from the US/Aust CVLs made a strike-- of course with no damage done. Those same BBs were supported with a CVE all have returned to Truk without bombarding Rabaul. Probably waiting a some of the KB to show up.

DEI will be hot and heavy for the next few weeks. Not sure what John is going to do in the central/ south Pacific? I have lost Midway, Canton Is, and Christmas Is.

Quite day. Kongo takes another torpedo from Dutch sub NW of Borneo. Palembang falls. Hong Kong still holds out.

Fast transport landing portion of a BF at Christmas Is (intell). Let's see if we can distrust some of this.

From what I have seen of John's recent games he likes to cut off supply and transport between America and Australia.

He likes taking on Australia but seems less enthusiastic about India.

If you let him push far enough he will take Tahiti.

His most obvious flaw is that he overextends his forces in the initial expansion. This would cause long term issues with supply and fuel which has been indicated in his other AAR's.

I would expect him to take Perth, Darwin, Port Moresby and Horn Island. He may or may not make a strategic bombing attack on either Sydney or Melborne. He is know to raid these ports during the war to attack shipping being repaired.

For supply I would immediately start setting up convoys between South Africa and Australia probably a deep south run to Melborne would be one of the best chances although he will send air reconnaissance and interdiction forces to check this route.

For the short term I would let him expand to his heart's content. Then I would plan a multiple axis plan of attack with at least 3 main vectors. When I was ready I would start to cause trouble in the farthest place away from his CV's which he will happily respond to. Rinse and repeat until he is completely out of fuel.

I would try to kill his navy along the way ;]

Thanks for the input. First game with John he did the India thing and it became a major stalemate. Last game he took OZ on me.. I am not going to let that happen again. I can't stop him from taking Darwin.

Big difference in what I am doing already is more search aircraft , PBYs and B-17s. I have hugh interlocking search grids. Losing Christmas Is will make it a little harder, but he is also going to have to supply the base himself. There is a lot of activity at Midway, but jJohn never has run he KB east of PH.

It is a wait and see war.

Hong Kong still holds .

Houston and Boise sunk at Kendari. I never saw the cruiser force he had there. Should have had more search up from all bases. Need more aircraft. Build more build more build

There should be at shoot out at Christmas in the replay. Two US TFs are to hit. IJN has two there also. Should be interesting!!!

I have lost track of the KB wondering where are????????????????
Best guess is one two options a big towards PH and or Suva. The other is support in the Rabaul landings.

I need to determine where my carriers go. IDEAS????????????

Air raid Palembang-- Sent 16 B-17s to Batavia with most of the Dutch bombers to hit the port. 24 ships are confirmed in port, probably mostly transports.

ALLIED CONVOYS have been sent to certain locations.

Well the KB shows up south of Port Moresby. Catches the Houston at Horn Is running from the Mini KB. Hammer and anvil. Houston is in port but probably won' t make repairs.

Finally the long awaited Rabaul landings has happen. Hopefully Port Moresby has enough supplies.

DEI-- Landing at Merak. Faster than I was planning. Amazing some times how fast new plans have to be made. Coos Is is being built up. Two hundred mines are at Coos., but no CD guns.

Another bombardment at Christmas Island should happen this turn. SBDs have been missing the DDs there the last two days.

Hong Kong falls .

Rabaul falls also

Almost the entire IJN air fleet is between Port Moresby and OZ. Sight and intell confirms TF headed towards Port Moresby should start landing in the next 4-7 days. Not much I can do this.

Is Noumea next or Oz? Suva should be strong enough for awhile.

First landings near Alaska.

Amph force sighted near Milne Bay. SBDs put 1 1000lb bomb in a BB.

Jan 9

Port Moresby Amph forces starts landing two more 1000lbs hit two different BBs. No fires sights in any of the 1000 pounders. 2nd Inf division lands

Jan 10

First assault on Port Moresby fails.

Jan 11 -- Port Morseby falls to the 2nd Div.
Searchs shows most of the front line carriers for IJN are near Rabaul.

Christmas Is. US CAs bombard about every four day. I am sending a DD to Midway to bombard.

Jan 13

KB sighted north Noumea. I have the 34th reg landing at Noumea right now.

Jan 14

Landings at Ambon going on

US TF at Noumea gets most of the 34th landed, but most of the vehicles still on the APs when the IJN stikes

The BRAVE PC SWAN goes into action just outside of Noumea

Day Time Surface Combat, near Belep Islands at 113,155, Range 10,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
PB Okiyu Maru, Shell hits 2
xAK Yosyu Maru
xAK Tensyo Maru, Shell hits 1
xAP Tatsuta Maru
xAP Hikawa Maru

Allied Ships
PC Swan

Now the frantic attempt to reinforce Koumac before any landings.

Jan 15-16 air battles around Noumea as the KB pulls back a little. ON the 17th the Imperial 13th Indpt Infantry Regiment lands at Koumac. I have air transported in a bunch of marines to support two art batt and the New Caledonia Det.

Jan 18 Indianapolis finds landing TF and does some damage
Day Time Surface Combat, near Belep Islands at 113,155, Range 20,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Yuzuki, Shell hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
PB Okiyu Maru, Shell hits 8, and is sunk
xAK Yosyu Maru, Shell hits 11, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Tensyo Maru, Shell hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAP Tatsuta Maru, Shell hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAP Hikawa Maru, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
CA Indianapolis, Shell hits 2
DD Tucker

IJA assaults Koumac and fails

Our battles have seamed to centered in this theater.I know John will be back with more hopefully this will delay his plans. Singapore still stands and DEI stills holds. With only Palembang and Kendari haven fallen.

A few games ago, I pointed out to John the presences of three highly experienced (80) regiments in northern China. Now he spends PPs early in his games and often sends them to SoPac. Expect to see the other two soon.

I think John got spoiled with all the 'toys' for the IJN in RA, that he is having trouble going back to stock troops only. No 'Assault Divisions' to use in SoPac.

I completely agree with you on this point. John doesn't have the same toys. He is moving fairly quickly in the SoPac though. At this point my guess would be Australia for his objectives. Pearl is out, he has been moving somewhat slow in DEI== so I believe India is not high on his list. All of his fleet carriers are in SoPac. The 2nd Div is at Port Moresby etc. For the next month or so there will be a battle for Noumea. It will give me time to reinforce OZ

Nice to see the Allies get some licks in so early in the game.
With those CVEs out of the way, you should be able to continue the decimation of that convoy unless KB can get there in one turn.

KB is around Noumea so my carriers are safe for now, but Noumea and of course Suva in a few weeks will be in trouble.
