Saw something I don't understand, perhaps someone who has played a bit more can help..... In hex # 10,41 (30 miles SE of Port Moresby) I put three torpedoes into the side of the Enyo Maru who was carrying a landing force of infantry. She sunk, but the infantry she was carrying is still in 10,41 (340 troops, 4 guns)... 30 miles out to sea. They've been there for two turns now. I've sent subs and a surface craft into the hex to see if anything happened ("rescuing elements of so-and-so infantry")- but nothing. If I knew how to do a "screen capture" I'd attach it to the thread (perhaps someone could help with this as well?). Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks :D

Hit the F2 button. I think you will find this is a coastal hex. Looks like the japs are going to march overland to PM.

As I have not seen any "life rafts" in the UV database, I suspect this may be some kind of Shinto ceremony honoring the dead or it could be there is a very shallow reef and they are all standing there knee-deep waiting for a ride?

If you want to do a screenshot, center your screen where you want it, then press the "print screen" button toward the upper right of your keyboard. Then, you have to open an image editing program (Paint works fine) and paste the image, after which you can save it (best as a .jpg file) and attach it to a post.

I'd like to see this one.

perhaps a new way to off load infantry...? sail along the coast and jump off when the ship breaks apart - then wade to the objective :D (but who's dragging the guns?) My opp says the infantry are the remains of the transport...he wouldn't lie...would he??

pasternaki - thanks for the capture info...will try to get a screen saved for the thread :)

Yep - these boys are doing the Leon Klinghoffer - he didn't shower on board ship because he washed up on shore. They just look like they're at sea because of the arrangement of icons within hexes inherent in the game.

As this zoomed-in screenshot shows, the hex immediately SE of Port Moresby is a coastal hex with a teensy fringe of land big enough for your troops to stand on. To get anywhere from there, their first move will have to be NE across the green hexside.

This is one of the reasons I always have the hexgrid and hexside features on. You can always see the nuances that way (and besides, I'm an old-time paper-and-cardboard wargamer, and, in those games, everything had to be depicted).

Just drop 'em off some steaks, a couple of barbies, and the female cast of "Beach Blanket Bingo," and I'm sure they'll get along famously.

Okay, thanks for the confirmation...I have seen this before (e.g. S of Basse Poyaas they marched from Noumea) but never as a result of the sinking of a transport...guess they just waded ashore :) One more thing to file away in my wife's suddenly missing recipe card file box :D

I have had this happen to me. However there was no hex which they could move to ( I was invading PM and thought they could march there). I had to send an AP to pick them up. It worked and they went merrily on to help with the capture of PM.:)

In simulation terms I look at this situation in this manner:

The Enyo Maru receives heavy flooding damage from the torpedoes, but her propulsion system is still operating. The captain turns the ship towards shore and orders full speed ahead, managing to beach the ship rather than have her go down at sea with her valuable troops. (She was in the coastal hex when torpedoed).

In Sonny's case, she runs aground on a shoal miles at sea. The soldiers and sailors are quite glad that they had a serviceable radio to help friendly forces locate and rescue them.

Normally, when I see a ship go down with troops, you see messages about the troops being rescued by other vessels. Maybe they included grounding on shoals in the game code...

In my case it happened because I set that hex as a destination hex - my TF would not go through the hex because it was mined and I wanted the TF to go through to clear the mines. So when it reached the destination hex and cleared some mines it also dropped off the troops.:)

Around land I use the coastal and shallow hex markers as kind of a hex outline... on the open water the "hex trail" when Move To is selected guides me as well... I do F6 and use them if I need to count range (for LBA placement, etc.) but the sides being up all the time started to wear on the eyes :p ...... of course after my disaster vs. Quark, maybe I'll just turn the color down on the monitor and leave them up as well ;)

agreed....it was the first time I had seen this and wanted to verify what had hapened...which also shows the benefit or running transports in shallow water hexes (if possible)...

That is sooooooooo wrong. Is it getting hot under your chair? Are thunder clouds gathering overhead as we speak? I'm just sorry I didn't think of it first................ ;)
