Yeah, I named the Attachment. I knew I was too tired to do this. Was looking at some stuff from my time in Boston. Forgot to rename the attachment. duh.......

You know the USS Constitution was once used to house prisoners. If you ever get to Boston, Go see the ship. Word of caution though, Don't go on hot days. There's no shade on the pier.....GP

Actually I didn't cheat. I recognized the photo. After all , in 23+ years in the USN/USNR she's the only ship I was ever assigned to. I once was TAD'ed to her for a weekend (I co-ordinated several retirement ceremonies and got an incredible tour of the ship--places the tourist don't go).

To easy, Hummmm. I'll be back. Oh dr.hal yes the morgan. I visited her at mistic seaport in conn years ago. Built a real nice model of her to. with fine string rigging and cloth sails....GP

She's a beautiful ship. I've been on board 10 or 12 times. Once, when I was in college I found myself at the pier around 8 or 9 in the morning and one of the junior officers was working on something on the pier about 40 feet from the ship. We talked for a few minutes and he asked if I would like to see some of the stuff the public doesn't see. I saw some of the renovation work they were doing at the time below deck. Pretty cool stuff. He told me about the constant water leaks too. Built a nice model of her too....GP

I was in Sweden when she was being recovered, a really big deal at the time, but I didn't get to see her as they had to constantly spray her to stop deterioration. I guess she is stable now.

On second thought the Warrior didn't have a ram bow. Ugh.

There was a book on the Vasa and it's raising/restoration in the library at my high school. I was intrigued. I was also the only student to ever check that book out.

Seeing the Vasa would be a bucket list item, but it falls behind Constitution and Victory.

Saw the Vasa in '09. WOW They have done a tremendous job with the salvage and showing at the museum!

Yes it is the Huascar. picture taken on Valparaiso, after it was captured by Chile.

this is a more recent one, Huascar is one of the few ironclads preserved as museum ship.

It had a distinguished carrier in both Peruvian and Chilean navies; it fought in 3 battles with Peruvian colors:
Pacocha in 1877 vs. the British Pacific squadron (a draw, as the British guns could not penetrate its armor)
Iquique in 1879 vs. Chilean frigate "Esmeralda" (Huascar rammed and sunk it).
Angamos in 1979 vs. the entire Chilean fleet (2 ironclads, 4 wooden ships). The 1st picture was just after the battle as you can see the damage.
By then Chile was using one of the earliest AP shells available (Palliser shot). These meant the end of the "ironclad invulnerability". In that battle, most Peruvian officers and sailors were decimated by the piercing shots, then it was captured

Most South American navies are between 20 to 30 years behind... but not 150 years as to be using ironclads in 1979

I've been aboard her. It was a real thrill. Honest to gosh early steam power plant and real live Armstrongs. The Museum people were great as were the staff from Armada. If a visitor has any interest in the period or the technologies, it's hard to get them to shut up. Nor should you. They know their stuff and it's beyond extensive. A fabulous visit, to my mind.

A small passenger-cargo gunboat built in kit form in 1861; because it was destined for lake Titicaca (12,500 ft. above sea level), with no piece to weight more than 3 � cwts, the maximum carrying capacity of a mule (no railroad back then).

It had a 60 horse power (HP) two cylinder steam engine which, for want of more conventional fuel, was fired by dried llama dung�

Speaking of "hard to get them to shut up" (which is OK) There's a Military museum in Groveport, Ohio, called the Motts Military Museum. Anyway, my daughter and I went there back in march of this year and one of the older guys answered a question of mine and got attached to us. So he gave us a personal tour of the place. They have artifacts as small as a musket ball and as large as a A7 corsair. I drove by there two days ago and noticed they are restoring a DC3 with D-Day markings. Its only about 3 or 4 dollars to get in. They have historic items from the American civil war thru 9/11. Even a full size walkin duplicate of Eddie Rickenbackers childhood home in Columbus. They have a very good website. Check it out....GP
