Just got the game, base game, feeling I got more than I expected. That's a good thing! Any one got some pointers they'd like to share?

There are some absolutely fantastic YouTube videos that give a great intro to the game. I'll post links later if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I agree about the slog - Let's Play videos are great but would be nice if there was a "quick tips" write up somewhere - e.g. "how to avoid a complete crash and burn on your first play through" or a wiki of advice/mechanics by topic. Lots of great information on this board and in those videos but it can take hours to ferret out a answer when a few concise sentences would work.

Of course this is no ones obligation to compile (I won't!), but I do feel this is a pain point for new players that is easier to get over with many other complex games due to solid official/un-official wikis.

Your so right about the vids. I found Matrix games looking for Panzer General. Found Panzer Corps and have played it for year and a half! Thought I'd try DW, there's a lot more to it. Could be a 3 year game to max it out.

Where to start ..in the galactopedia gives some suggestions when you start the game up.
Not all is documented and you must try out by yourself the gui ..
Handy/necessary is to name of stations, ships etc, by a self choosen name
It is clicking on the excisting name in the leftunder box (selection box) what brings up a screen where can chance a name

In case anyone else feels that reading consumes less time than watching videos, there's a pinned thread with a collection of guides.

My favorites from it:

beginner level: (that helped me a lot at the start)
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3508583

rookie: (that got me to use the AI improvement mod, since vanilla difficulties can hardly compete with that strategy)

advanced: (still ingesting that wall of text)

I'm just coming out of the noob stage and entering novice.

My advice: don't automate. Go full manual. After a few restarts you'll know so much more than if you try to "wade in" using auto everything.

This thread will change the game for you and make you understand all the happenings of the game:

Time for Extreme difficulty with the AI Improvement Mod. Are you a man, or are you a neckbeard!?

Playing small games and doing everything myself helped me understand the game a lot.

Also Das24680's youtube videos.(Can't link yet, forum rules...)

On the other hand, i play a few weeks, what the hell do i know?

Totally endorse that. I started with a lot of auto on, realised i didn't have a clue what was going on, and started again pre-warp following that guide. Changed everything. Neckbeard a distant memory.
