No, I'm now thinking she's an example of the Nicaruagan 7th Naval Brigade that planted all those mines and sank the Maine. All those people said it happened at Havanna, but that's just one story.

looking like a "Lightfoot" destroyer leader (1915-1916), with the one tall, and 3 short stacks.

Not there yet, getting warmer...

Just in case she WAS the Stewart , here's the tale. USS Stewart DD-224 was scuttled when Cavite fell. The Japanese raised her and renamed her Patrol Boat # 102. After the war , the USN recovered her , and since we already had a new Steward (DE-234) the USN simple called her DD-224.

Patrol boat 102 shared credit for sinking USS Harder.

Of course if she's a Tribal , then she has to be the Zubian. When each ship , the Zulu and Nubian were damaged , they
grafted the undamaged part to the other and produced a new ship.

Good one Steve. HMS Zubian.

Zulu had its stern blown off. Nubian had its bow blown off.
They stuck the good parts of Zulu and Nubian together and commissioned her the Zubian.

Whew ... you guys had me worried there for a minute.

No extra credit. That was his third or fourth guess!

Actually I should get NO credit as I didn't base either of my guesses upon the photos (neither looked right to me). But I was familiar with each ship and Symon's clues "clued me in".
So how many "guesses" did you make? I may not get ANY credit. But we should deduct some from you for being "Chicken-livered" and not making any real ones. . 1st Gurka is a name , NOT a story. So there!

Would ya'll like another one? I have one that I'm betting even Steve can't get. Oh, heck, should just go ahead and post it. This one is wrapped up in significant historical events that made me go Woof!!! when I looked into them.

[edit] A teensy, but obfuscatory, clue is that she was a "proof of concept" that eventually resulted in USS Constitution, and many others, both earlier and later.

Name this mystery ship (obviously from a time before photographs).

Strange rig, I'd guess it was some kind of top sail rigged cat boat. A lateen mizzen with gaffed main. Strange. I don't see gunports . so I assume it's not a warship.
The rounded bow looks almost like some kind of medieval Cog, but it has no towers.

The French had a rig somewhat similar called a "Galliot" , and the English colliers used something similar in a rig. I've had no luck with a US similar type.

Dude, you are obviously a sailor, and a decent naval historian, notwithstanding your silly airplane stuff. No gunports, but the deckplan shows a couple carriage guns that could be fired through the entry port openings.

Think about it. Topsail rigged, sprit main cat boat, with a lateen mizzen. Hint, just for you, the rig had many names during the period, barke, barque longe, baris, basically a ship that is easier going to weather than a full rigged ship. There was a time when these rigs were used often.

[ed] but it wasn't the rig. The rig lets you put her into the right time period (+/- 75 years or so). It was who she was and what she did.

Ciao John

It's a brigantine design, not sure of the name. Looking....

<edit>

My choice is the Experiment. It fits the drawing, and the name would tweak Symon's interest.

My 2 cents, anyways.

Nope. Good guess, but she's not a brigantine, although it does tweak my interest. Your 2 cents have been deposited into the winner's pot.

I have another guess, but one to a customer. I'll just sit on the sidelines & see if I'm any smarter once the teacher gives me a dunce cap.

Naw...a bomb vessels mast would be more angled and further aft....and her timbers would be massive.

I'm thinking either Nina, Pinta, or Santa Maria but I haven't much time now for a search of individual pictures. I know it's not fair to make three guesses in one post, so this is just a hint for someone with more time!

The bow sail design is old, but maybe not quite that old. The main and mizzen sails are from Mediterranean designs, so I'd say not later than about 1700, and probably much older. The bow looks Dutch to me. I have no idea of a name.

She's the Virginia or Virginia of Sagadanoc. The first English ship built in America. Approx. 1608.
