Even before moving out for Iwo Jima, Wasp must be pulled off line for repairs. 3 of the engine damage is major, but there are some pretty major support ships at Truk that might be able to make her paint shine.

Emerald still needs a couple of days to make Colombo. Koggala is only a size 1 port and will likely not prevent her sinking.

Tinian is ours! The 38th ID has disruption of 25%, but the other units will continue the attack tomorrow to secure Tinian as soon as possible. Now that the defenders have been kicked out of their fortifications, the1E and 2E attacking aircraft will drop down from 20,000 ft to their usual attack altitudes and should be far more effective. Lots of engineers are loading at Saipan and Guam to get to work on Tinian. Ambon is also ours and the attack will continue there as well, although against more stubborn opposition.

The base at Saipan has reached max size, 7 and 4.

Watampone was auto-captured two days ago. Today we flew in the combat elements of a commando Bn to secure the port. The remaining elements will take about two days to finish air lifting in, and the NZ 2nd Rgt (light tanks) is on the way via landing craft. Even if a stand up fight is required at Makassar, our troops can land at Watampone instead of making an opposed landing at Makassar. We also have a Rgt and a Bn preparing for Sidate so that the assigned division can land at their ease and march on Manado. Also, a transport convoy with base troops that was to unload at Namlea (to allow shipping in amphib mode) is being diverted directly to Kolaka so that base can become operational more quickly.

The attack at Tinian went fine but the air strikes were largely poor. First off, it is still jungle so results are hard to come by, and second, our attack bombers were somewhat roughly handled. We'll bring them up to 5,000 ft. The 38th ID is down to 17% disruption but the other division is in the twenties, so they will switch off to keep the attack going and maximize the advantage taken of enemy forces' disruption. There is now only one enemy unit at Ambon.

All the assigned engineers loaded, moved to Tinian, and almost all of them unloaded. All were loaded with no extra supply as that was already unloading at Tinian. The engineers got there early enough to repair all the base damage (which was nearly total!), and put a few percent on airfield construction. Predictably, the base is now over stacked (~59k to 35k) and a base force is only a few days away at sea. As soon as the defenders are finished off we will pull out the combat forces.

There are two small convoys at Iwo Jima and we are engaging in a little sleight of hand. Three CL TFs are ~120 nm NW of Agrihan and one has been scouted by the IJN. That one plus another will reposition to two separate hexes, each one hex closer to the fighter protection of Agrihan. The other will make a full speed run to Iwo Jima to catch what it can. Any engineering damage will be considered incidental as all the modern CL have upgrades due beginning in a couple of weeks anyway. I want to continue to call attention to the Iwo Jima area in such a way that any small sighting when the invasion fleet is on the way will not be unusual and therefore cause for immediate alarm. Iwo Jima is an obviously important target so we can not hope to convince DAW HQ that we are not interested, but perhaps we can keep up enough operations and clutter all over that we get a turn or two of slower reaction when we do move on the target.

In 18 days, Illustrious will be back in business at Bombay. While our carrier pilots will always need more training, that will give us sufficient mass to start skirting the heavy Imperial defensive positions that have stymied us so far. We have a number of units preparing for Pegu and some smaller units preparing for Moulmein. The purpose of landing at Moulmein would be to thwart Imperial efforts to quickly send reinforcements to Pegu. As part of the main force, 4 USMC Div (already prepared for Pegu) is being sent marching to Ramree Island. There are many other units which will be detailed later. As some are new and have very low morale and most units have low preparation so far, at least 2 months will be required before the operation can proceed.

Our subs got two xAK, two E, and an SC.

1,386 AV at Chungking.

A big day in the air over Burma and the Bay of Bengal! First, the Empire made a series or very large and very effective sweeps of Ramree Island, seemingly all of them coming from Chiang Mai. All of their sweeps came in before any strikes. They definitely came out on top, and more than one of their carrier strikes arrived later to find themselves unbothered by CAP. Still, there were plenty of angry Allied fighter pilots in the air. None of our strikes even got to make attack runs on the IJN carriers and other forces. Theirs sank one empty xAP far to the north, made several unsuccessful attacks on CL Kenya returning from bombarding Moulmein, and hit BC Renown with two bombs (damage = 1 minor flotation). There was carnage in the air, but both sides still have large air complements for action tomorrow. See map and air losses below. Obviously it's much better for us to have these battles now than in a couple of months when we have troops embarked for amphibious operations. I suppose from the Empire's point of view it's better now than when we have a substantial carrier force operating a couple of months from now.

Ambon is secured. Tinian, still very much working on it. The divisions will switch off again, and two of the armored units will rest. Bombers are still being shot down! The ex-defenders of Kendari were retreated from one clear hex to another and will be left there for air units to deal with.

That transport convoy that had been diverted from Kendari to Kolaka has been diverted to Watampone. With the increased space that we have obtained in the Mariana Islands, we will be able to bring all the Iwo Jima assault forces there in strat mode, then re-load in combat mode for a shorter journey. Several carriers are in port at Truk to recover what damage they can while the troops make their way to the Marianas as mentioned. Wasp, one CL, almost all the CLAA, and a few DD have formed up and set out for Pearl Harbor where they will get upgrades and/or extensive repairs. Within a few days the Rgt and Bn at Morotai will load for Sidate (only ~half prepared). The division for Manado is unloading at Boela now.

Here are today's air losses.

Here is the situation in the Bay of Bengal. Notice the position of the IJN carriers. The Allied bomber groups on Naval Attack with Ground Attack secondary mission have their range set to equal the range to the ground target 1 hex SE of Prome, so they are all at least one hex short on range from being ordered to attack the carriers. We will stand down our ground bombing attacks in Burma for tomorrow to give priority to both CAP and escort for naval strikes. It is doubtful that the IJN will hang around, but it is possible that they will either sally farther north into the bay or west toward the base at Colombo. All B-24 and B-17 squadrons (yes, there is one squadron each of B-17E and B-17 F still operating) are set to naval attack, maximum range, 10,000 ft.

Our subs came up empty and one was sunk near Japan.

1,381 AV at Chungking.

We erroneously left the B-24J groups at one base and one British 4EB group set to attack the usual hex SE of Prome - they should have been stood down with the others - and we lost more than a dozen 4EB as a result when the Empire set strong LRCAP. We anticipated this move but shot ourselves in the foot. I've been advised to blame the staff in cases like this.

Emerald finally made it to Colombo and the estimate for full repair in the shipyard is 263 days. I am going with pier side first to get rid of everything else that can be, which will take 7 days, after which she will move to the shipyard.

CL De Ruyter firing at Makassar
CL Java firing at Makassar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We can probably take Makassar with only one regiment, and the closest one prepared for it is at Boela. A convoy passing near there is being rerouted to pick them up and take them to Watampone.

We are seeing more Imperial ground losses show up, so I suppose there is some delay before they make the VP section on the Intel screen??

One ID at Tinian is still 14% disrupted and one armored unit is 12%, but all combat units will attack tomorrow.

The Rgt at Morotai is loading for Sidate. Now 39% prepared, they should get ashore in good enough shape. The Bn, now 31% prepared, will follow in a second wave.

The invasion for Koepang is on the way, with one Art, two Arm, and only one of two prepared Inf Rgt. Koepang scouts at 6,300 troops in 3 units, so this will probably be enough. The invasion will be primarily via LS and LC type ships with light escort.

The Imperial carriers continue withdrawing.

1,442 AV at Chungking. A slow but steady recovery in the face of less bombing over the last two or so days. Will it last?

The Empire did a little recon SW of Mengtze. One or more of those Imperial units is now pulling back. Wussies!

The Empire did better with its CAP trap over those two destroyers, losing the same amount of Zeros but taking down 5x P-47D25 and several other planes.

There is a large convoy at Tavoy and a smaller one at Mergui. The Imperial operations at sea and in the air are good cover for them.

The offensive at Tinian is back on track. The 38th ID has disruption at 25% and the three armored units are in the teens, so tomorrow the artillery will bombard but there will be no assault. Current recon shows 2 units with 18,100 troops, 60 guns, and 13 AFV remaining. The various bombers targeting Tinian have been re-targeted due to the destroyed units (and those from the prior attack).

Doesn't the above mean that all the enemy units on Tinian were wiped out?
Even if not, you knocked his 150 raw AV down by 94, so one more attack should do the job.

Nah, it seems to mean an unspecified number. But when I first saw it in the report this turn I hoped exactly what you said, because that's usually it. Drat!

But the troop tally did drop by ~7k, and only two units are left. I also dropped the medium bombers and torpedo bombers back down to 5,000ft with the demise of the two AA units.

For some reason when I has looked at this TF during orders I read it as heading 'northwest' rather than 'northeast'. Hope this really is a tanker convoy trying to make one last run to Balikpapan and not carriers preparing to strike!

Meanwhile, the IJN sallied forth with a high-speed thrust designed to catch unwary transports. They were protected by cloud cover in the morning. Two SCTF will sortie from Kendari tonight to catch them if they stay around to hunt. There is a 4x DD TF at Salajar (and another at Kalao) which will push into the intruders' hex tonight to engage them. Another 2x DD TF is at Salajar and will stay put. One of the two TF from Kendari is the scratch force including Australian and Dutch cruisers. The other is 8x Fletcher DD, led by Arleigh Burke. I spent some very dear PP to make sure that he has 8 excellent captains. Some shuffling of air groups has also been done to get more naval attack groups to Kendari, which is the only offensive capable air base close enough to the action. Groups at Namlea have naval attack orders, but the range makes their help less certain.

Is that TF that is 2 hexes from the word "Sea" the same one you mentioned in your previous post going NE? If so, it
has now gone one hex west. Could be an ASW patrol, but the previous sighting said it had tankers, which would make it bait
for your TFs?

Our subs got an xAP.

1,448 AV at Chungking.

Quiet in Burma. Too quiet... The large Imperial convoy is still at Tavoy, and we see an undetermined number of troops/units moving east out of Rangoon. Most likely Imperial spies and scouts have seen the USMC 4th Div moving up the road from Prome to Ramree Island and rightly understand that before long the flank of their position in Burma will be threatened.

One squadron of B-29 is ready at Calcutta, and another is readying planes at Karachi. Three others have arrived at Aden, and several more will arrive there in the next few days.

We have a very small gap in naval search coverage just behind the front line bases and it is possible that an Imperial TF has unknowingly found it, as we do not see the Oshio/Arashio force from daylight search. BTW, it is not a full gap, but is only covered by the 4 hexes 360 degree coverage around a base with active naval search. Meanwhile, Burke decided to check out the waters north of Bali.

The invasion of Sidate is heading in with the idea of some unloading getting done tomorrow, then the remaining unloading plus a hasty exit the following day. P-38 are on LRCAP but the hasty exit the day after is designed to thwart any carrier borne attacks that might develop. The convoys and their DD escort TF stood 1 hex off of Ternate (3 hexes from Sidate) to give the impression of a landing there.

We now - finally - have a radar operating at Kalao. We still need to get some longshoremen into Salajar but both there and Watampone (where longshoremen just unloaded and were getting to work) had unloading interrupted by the enemy surface forces activity. The radars for those bases are being unloaded at Kendari and will be forwarded shortly.

Is that TF that is 2 hexes from the word "Sea" the same one you mentioned in your previous post going NE? If so, it
has now gone one hex west. Could be an ASW patrol, but the previous sighting said it had tankers, which would make it bait
for your TFs?

I can't be certain, but I think that TF/convoy wound up at Bandjermasin (see pic in next days post).

I am pretty sure that at this point not all IJ TF are spotted. Knowing how much better Allied search is than Imperial search, I'm sure it is much worse over at DAW HQ.

Woe to the Betties ordered to attack a US DD TF in 1944 - small chance of a hit, big chance of being shot down!

That IJN TF on the left side of the screen is still in the same hex as the previous post. Bad planning if it is a CV TF. Hope your sub gets in a little "torpedo recon"!

This version might be more clear. Again I can't be certain if the one I am labeling yesterday's convoy really is that one, but it makes sense. First, the direction of travel seen yesterday matches. Second, the speed matches. A carrier TF could sprint into any one of the positions with sightings from outside of search range, but a convoy could not.

The Empire captured:

The Allies captured:
Boeton

There were Imperial amphibious or airborne operations at:

There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at:
Sidate

Our subs got a PB.

1,461 AV at Chungking.

Burma is still quiet. That convoy is still at Tavoy, along with 2 dozen fighters. 117 fighters are at Chiang Mai so the Empire might be trying something soon. Our B-24J groups at Diamond Harbour are well reseted, but those in and around Dimapur are still (stood down) conducting long term maintenance on airframes. In a day or two we will order P-47 sweeps over Chiang Mai and 4EB strikes to beard the lion in his den, if he cooperates by waiting.

Burke's Bow Wows ran into the two retiring IJN DD that caused convoys to stop unloading yesterday, but that was bad news because it left his TF in range for many air attacks during daylight. Hammann was eventually hit by a torp, and much later hit by two more. It seemed that all the attacking aircraft came from Soerabaja. Unfortunately our Spitfires at Kalao, even bolstered by their new ground-based radar system, did not make any intercepts. Before too long Salajar and Watampone should both be sporting their radars (via Kendari) and their own fighter squadrons as their airfields near completion.

Meanwhile the loading and transfer of troops for Iwo Jima continues. Opportunistically, so does the repair of minor damage to the fleet carriers.

The invasion forces for Koepang will be met by a fleet oiler TF tomorrow to tend to the short range craft, then the whole movable feast will set off for Roti and Koepang.

Lots of units are still being transferred from the eastern coast of Australia to Darwin and the eastern DEI

There appears to be a major reinforcement of Haha Jima underway.

Burma is still quiet as we send various units to Ramree Island and both sides coil air strength for the next strike. All USA 4EB will strike Chiang Mai tomorrow, which is sporting about 114 fighters and 9 auxiliary types. Six squadrons of fighters will sweep ahead of the bombers (which are on naval/airfield attack and so should hit in the afternoon): 2x P-47D25, 3x P-47D2, and 1x P-38L.

The unloading at Sidate finished but both convoys lacked time to set sail.

Kongo was identified somewhat west of Soerabaja in a TF that shows as heading west. There is a CA TF just SE of Soerabaja at Probolinggo and heading southeast. The Roti/Koepang invasion force will move forward two hexes (some landing craft just refueled at sea from oilers). They should be plenty out of range of naval interdiction, and will be in a better position to rush (such as slow ships can rush) to their objective between IJN sortie pulses.

The movement of forces for Iwo Jima continues.

Here is the eastern DEI.

Our subs got an E and two xAK.

1,448 AV at Chungking.

The sweeps over Chiang Mai netted more than a dozen Tojo for no losses, but the weather deteriorated so badly that no bombing runs went in. The orders are left the same for tomorrow, but who knows what DAW HQ decided after today's sweeps.

IJN warships continue gathering in the Java Sea. A TF with 2x BB is seen midway between Java and Borneo just 4 hexes north of Soerabaja. A CA TF is just off the southeastern tip of Java. An ASW TF is 3 hexes east of Soerabaja. Our Roti/Koepang invasion moves two more hexes NW tomorrow, which will put them 3 hexes SSE Koepang. The Dutch/Australian TF at Kendari will patrol just NE of Salajar tomorrow. Watampone has a size 1 airfield now and a P-47 group is moving in. Salajar itself will build a size 1 airfield in probably two more days. Burke's Bow Wows will move to Kalao in anticipation of running interference for the Koepang invasion forces within a couple of days. Kalao airbase will be size 2 in two days, allowing dive bombers to operate.

Even while there is increasing activity in the DEI in response to our movements there, the Bonins and other islands that we are interested in keep on receiving convoys. The last unit for the Iwo Jima invasion is loading at Manus for the Marianas. Others are on their way, one is unloading now, and a number are already there awaiting their brethren so that all can combat load at the same time. Meanwhile the fleet carriers are repairing minor wear and tear at Truk and all will be ready in about 13 days, which should mean that they are ready to go as soon as the troops are all combat loaded and ready to go.

I've been looking at potential B-29 targets. All of the Home Islands are at best extended range from the Mariana Islands. Maybe I'll start with them in Calcutta and thereabouts and reduce the industrial assets in places like Bangkok first. Opinions? Suggestions? Just saw that Palembang is in normal range from Palopo (NW Kendari) and Watampone (already under development, and both can build to size 9. I'll get some more engineers moving! Perhaps a massed strike or two on Bangkok industry, then transfer to Watampone for strikes against Palembang industry.

Here is a look at the eastern DEI with Allied search missions shown (except for a night search mission from Watampone added after the pic). Soerabaja has 98 fighters, 113 bombers, and 68 auxiliary types.

Also, range to Miri and Brunei is only 18 hexes. Even is within normal (28) range at only 27 hexes. The collection of other Allied bases nearby can provide additional fighter protection and work to suppress Imperial bases within range. Watampone looks like a good spot.

Do you have a HR against nightbombing of strategic targets?

No.

I will definitely use that with the 'night' version of the B-29; the version with most guns removed. Not so sure I will use it much with the 'regular' B-29.

Heh, they are pretty much the same thing. I strongly urge you not to use any version of the B29 in daylight. At least not against enemy CAP.

I would fly extended range from the Marianas hitting MAN at Osaka and Tokyo. You will take horrendous losses even at night once your opponent can start massing NFs. But the engine seems to go a bit bonanza with the extremely high numbers of HI/LI ath those two locations.

Even a small amount of fire can burn down tremendous amounts of HI/LI. This works very well until it drops down to about 1k were returns really start to diminish. I would start there until losses get too high and then start hitting any HI/LI within range in China. Its relatively safe to do until you get the "25" and "B" versions.

Crikey! Is it that bad? OK, I'll definitely think about it.

They are pretty tough bombers. Are you mostly talking about the later Imperial fighters? If I can torch the Palembang oilfields in April '44 it might be worth a few B-29 losses.

I don't know if it matters, but these are my best land bombing crews. I've been pulling out the best crews in the other 4EB squadrons in preparation for the B-29 squadrons' arrival.

Oops, meant to quote this but edited it instead. Added the bit about Miri, Brunei, and Singapore.
