Right before starting I´ve set up a mobile ASW patrol area for the ASW Gannets, and a couple of F-104 CAP south of Bornholm island. Once y clicked the start button, my units detected radar emissions from two goblins eastwards.
Thanks to this unexpected early warning I was able to sink a Whiskey SS with a Gannet.
I´ve sent the two Jaguar patrol boats to investigate unidentified contacts NE of their initial position. Right after, one of the Fletcher DDs sailing ahead of the convoy detected a goblin which was attacked with depth charges and hedgehogs. Because of the slow speed the DD sustained 6% damage and a minor flooding, and all that because of a false contact.
Because of micromanagement of the previous sloppy ASW attack, I didn't realize that one of the jaguars was under attack and sunk later by a Petya corvette. That was mended later by the second DD which poured on her a mix of HE and VT 5" rounds.
In the air front, The Soviet recon planes were wiped out by the F-104s and one by a Nike SAM.
5 hours later the lead DD detects a vampire warning. I put her on a northwards course a full speed, unfortunately the remaining Jaguar patrol boat was on the path of the AS-2 and catches the bullet converting the tiny boat in light and heat.
Another AS-2 flies to the Fletcher DD but fortunately misses.
After the convoy turns south east, a CAP of F-104s detects unidentified Skunk contacts making 17 kts. I ready a couple of bomb laden sabres to deal with these contacts. I select then to take off as a group and try later to assign them to attack automatically the ships, to no avail. I try later to select different low altitudes since it´s overcast with moderate rain. They keep flying over the enemy boats without releasing their bombs. The boats don´t fight back despite they are running at 35 kts.
Frustrated with this, I send them back to base.
At 2 hours from destination one of the DDs detects a goblin that results in another false contact. Again, this distraction, makes me separate that DD from the escorting column protecting the convoy, leaving it with a Koln class FF (the older ones off course..) and one DD facing the incoming boats from the east. At least one of the Gannets gives me an early detection of them.
The separated DD that pursued the false contact is attacked later by torpedoes, which makes her run farther from the escorting column. The Gannet with its last 3 sonobuoys was able to detect the offending sub, dispatching him with an Mk-44.
I try to deal with the incoming ships making a weak pincer with a Fletcher DD and the Koln, in the belief that they are two more Petya class corvettes.
I pay again my mistake with the Fletcher DD which is blown to bits by a salvo of Styx SSMs. The Petyas were actually Osas, The Koln gets one hit but fortunately the only damage are on the DC throwers and on two 40mm mounts. Later on, the valiant FF was able to destroy both Osas with their French 100mm auto guns.
The remaining ships and convoy arrived safely to Kolobrzeg, without casualties among the convoy.
This is a great scenario, maybe the only tweak should be to correct the Soviet submarines using their radars so early on the game.
