Got to thinking about all the new names/players I've seen joining our august forum and couldn't help but be sad to think of the ones we have lost. Some have left due to burnout, life issues, and--most sadly--death. Would like to start a thread for them. There is a Native Tribe that states when a person's name is said, then they are remembered and still live on...

I'd like to start with two who were quite important in my gaming life here through UV, WitP, and now AE:

1. Moses. My first opponent who taught me how to run a campaign and an AAR. Don't know what happened to him but he was my initial Sensai.

2. Dan Roper (Southern Paddler--Caneorebel). Several great matches and a good friend during a time of horrific need in my home, and a COMPLETE gentleman whom I've had the pleasure to talk to on the phone.

Your turn my friends...

Mogami. Technically, he played WitP, but he was an amazing Japanese player. He taught me more than anyone.

I'm glad to see canoerebel back. I think however that he is not paddling a canoe but rather manning a reconstruction of the "Hunley". I fear the worst.

Where the heck is Gräfin Zeppelin? Miss her.

I was just about to mention him. Miss that amusing sig of his with the cuties (albeit cartoon cuties, but cuties nonetheless).

Speaking of cuties...

I hope this is the right community, but wasn't there a female member who used to frequent the forums? Had a thumping, marching monster of a teddy bear as an avatar. Where'd she go?

I kinda miss Nemo, I didn't agree w/ his play-style, but he had great analytic insight.

Des was the first to come to mind, but can't go on without mentioning Mogami. He is the guy that talked to me at an Origins about WitP. I bought it then and showed my friend rjopel. We haven't looked back. Thanks Mogami!

The name Des got me thinking about DivePac88. I last crossed swords with him playing WitE, but a life threatening illness that had him hospitalized and undergoing surgeries that he stated he may not survive forced him to stop our game. A quick check shows he hasn’t made a post in over a year, I can only assume the worst at this point. Has anyone heard from him?

Jim

I remember Nomad was around a lot and really seemed to be one of the most helpful to new upstarts when I was first trying to learn the game.

I also have to mention Dan Nichols, my first PBEM opponent who was supposed to play both Jocke and I but fell ill and couldn't continue, so he introduced us and the rest can be read in the AARs! He was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful on the forums as well.

We lost Des Wallace, aka DivePac88 about a year ago ... I tried to upload the last pic of him, but the upload size has been decreased to 500K and my picture is 650K ... sorry.

Edit: miracle. I was able to resize the pic. Miss you Emu!

I've seen him lurking once in a great while ... he took a lot of criticsm for non-game related views. I think that more than anything keeps him from posting.

Stephan Reuter who was my opponent through UV and Witp had a heart attack a few years back and dropped our last game (AE) about midway through. He did recover but I think his priorities changed.

PzB!

Loved his AARs! Sadly he lost interest in AE after his last game. A real shame.

Hey, you know you've made a mark when you're listed in the "they've disappeared" thread! Thanks, John!

I'm still around though. I stop by the Forums two or three times a week to see what's up. I'm not currently following any AARs, but I especially like following threads where the knowledgeable folks of the Forums are posting about current events or weighing in on issues, because the collective knowledge is remarkable.

It's been more than a year since I sent my last AE turn (the one-year anniversary was 9/9). AE is still the best game I've ever seen and the only game I'd consider playing, but giving it up allowed me to restore some much-needed balance to life.

From time to time, old timers make a comeback. Q-Ball and AuburnTiger both came back, for instance, though I don't know if either of them are as into it as they were the first time around. I don't think I'll come back, but who knows what the future holds.

But, like the angelic character in Angels in the Outfield, remember, I'm always watching. :)

P.S. Oh, yeah. Don't forget Marky!

Hey Dan!

Thought I might be able to get you to increase your Post count by including you in the missed list.

Hope all is well with you, Georgia Backroads, and the family.

I was thinking about the people here who have passed in recent years. Des has been mentions. Sonny and Mike Scholl were on the development team and they have both passed since AE was released. There was another guy who as a history professor or something who died suddenly. I recall he died suddenly around Christmas. Only a few days before he had been holding court on his latest issue. I think his name was Hans, but I'm terrible with names (I've had brain farts and forgotten my own name).

If someone just drops out of sight, we wonder what happened to them, but there is always the chance they will be back someday. When people pass, it's a lot more final.

Bill

Bill raises a great point. We don't know, unless we have the personal phone number or address, when people die. Very sad but quite true.

Thanks for the info PaxMondo, and thanks for putting a face to the name. Though I am very sorry to hear my fears confirmed that he lost his last battle.

Some other names from the past that I haven’t seen around in ages:

Mr. Frag
Lemurs
TristanJohn

Not sure these guys ever made the move from WitP to WitP AE, but they were regular contributors back in the day that I never saw around again.

Jim
