This will lessen the threat somewhat for a short while.

After a naval move by the British (who moved the fleet to the Indian ocean, to the surprise of the Japanese who were thinking that it would stay longer in Europe to provide air cover in Italy) and US, and a somewhat failed attack by Russia, the axis power decide on a full pass action: Germany cannot significantly improve its current situation, and if the turn lasts, Rumania may well fall with dramatic consequences. Getting to the next turn would reorganize the units that were railed in Bucharest, and possibly let Rumania pass the winter. In addition, a lot of the incoming reinforcement for France would fail to arrive for lack of place to land.

Japan is dubious : a large part of the American battleship and cruiser fleet is sailing within the South China sea, and sendign the carriers to punish them sounds good. But as this also involves some risks, the worst being that the US fleet in Brisbane joined the current fleet and land based air support : this would probably not be good! As a consequence, Japan passes too.

But the turn goes on (pass succeeded on 20% only.)

Even though it is bad for the axis powers, their are no regrets : nothing was jeopardized by passing.

On the next impulse, Germany cannot pass. Japan tries a divert action in the Pacific, but this doesn't catch the attention of the USA which, along with Russia, continue their pressure on Germany.

Unfortunately, the turn continues one more impulse before at last, a second pass action succeeds.

The destructions suffered by Germany are tremendous. They amounts to 2 full production turns, not mentionning that now 4 resources don't reach the factories and the loss of the Ploesti oil fields ; and that's likely a permanent situation.

Bucarest resisted the Russian assault, barely. It will fall on the next turn, very likely.

Japan builds:
- 2 carriers (superstructures)
- 1 battleship (superstructures)
- 2 convoys
- 1 infantry
- 1 anti-tank
- 3 carrier air
- 2 pilots
- 1 nav3

China builds:
- 1 lnd4

The Commonwealth builds:
- 2 sub (infrastructures)
- 2 battleships (superstructures)
- repair 2 cruisers
- 4 pilots
- 1 Lnd4
- 1 Nav3
- 4 carriers planes
- 2 Ftr2
- 1 militia
- 1 motorized
- 2 garrison
- 1 mech div
- 1 anti-tank

The USA build:
- 5 light carrier (superstructures)
- 2 sub (superstructures)
- 1 sub (infrastures)
- 3 pilots
- 5 carrier planes (one at 0 cost)
- 2 Ftr3
- 1 motorized
- 1 armor div
- 1 artillery
- 1 marine
- 1 offensive
- 2BP for France

Well, this turn seals the faith of the Axis. Germany is on the ropes and will not be able to replace these units anymore...

Yes. I agree. Especially as the next turn, the allies get initiative (they are at +2) and the weather is good. Both Russia and the USA have an offensive to spend. But even so, Germany may last longer than expected. I'm pretty effective as far as defense is concerned and usually I always manage to prevent full exploitation of large successes.

Note that in the previous turn, I unwillingly botched the western allies ; the US should have used their offensive on the first impulse. Waiting let Germany regroup its forces. I don't know what comes next turn. Its pretty complicated to ensure blitz everywhere, and good attack bonus. This time, I think I botched Russia by spending the offensive on Zhukov too early (?) ; but I think he won't be able to mount a blitz. That's a shame... I'm just in the movement phase, and had to redo it three times (undo is buggy too, so sometimes you have to restart from scratch!)

Germany will be lucky to make it through 1944. Japan could very well look forward to taking the full brunt of Allied power for the final game year. Not a pretty situation.

The major problem is the loss of Ploesti. How much oil do the Germans have saved? Whatever the number, it won't be enough. The Germans are going to find that either their air force doesn't fly, in which case it might as well not exist, or that they won't be able to reorganize everything, and an unreorganized air unit is also useless.

Germany has saved 20 oil and still control 6 oil resources.

I'm not that much afraid that Germany will be short on oil anytime soon.
I'm rather more worried about a possible total collapse. The Front in Rumania has ceased to exist.
The front south Poland is on the verge of collapsing.
The front in northern Poland is well and kicking : good for it, but it feels somewhat alone.
The front in France is also showing definite signs of weakness.
In Italy, Germany is trying to retreat what it can through the alps... But the allied armies show no mercy, and the latest attack in the Po had a mere +8 blitz bonus...

The first impulse in September showed the allies push like bulls, and the damage already done amount to more that 50BP. To that, one should add 14 "virtualy dead" other BP (behind the Russian line now and unrecoverable...) ; and, oh joy! The Russian have a second offensive ready... Not to mention that that first impulse disorganized only a bunch of US units ; the rest of the allied armies are in excellent shape. Because it's important, I'll post some views of the various theaters.

EDIT: 20 oil!!

In France, McArthur launched an offensive south of Paris, along the seine. It was very successful and sent Von Rundstedt back in the pool. This move is close to trapping 4 Germna corps but forthcoming reinforcements from Germany should be able to extract them.

Kesselring was also attacked, but managed a good defense. However, he is left in a weak postion, being disorganized.

There is a chance to form a defensive line behind the Seine/Saône. But the allied units in Calais/Boulogne may be very annoying...

In Italy, the hex east of Milan was attacked from 4 sides ; the eng div provided help to pass the river, and Eisenhower provided HQ support. The Germna troops still in Italy still have a good chace of getting away. Once in Germany, keeping the passes shut should be rather easy.

In Rumania, the Russian forces dispatched the defending forces in Bucharest. More importantly, they have been able to get through the Carpathian mountains ; there is still ground to cover, and HQ have to follow, but Germnay has but two corps in Vienna to stop them... and the puny Hungarian army.

South of the Pripet, Zhukhov broke the Russain lines by disatching an armor and mechanized. It was an assault (he could not force a blitz) ; otherwise, the situation would be even worse. And near Cernauti, the Russians closed the exit to a stack of German units which had been trapped for more than one turn by retreating disorganized armies : even though they wanted to retreat, it was no possible because the way out was clogged...

As we can see, there is not much remaining to stop the red army on this map. Of course, the Germna army north will engage an organized retreat to shorten the lines. But how fast will this retreat be in front of the advancing Russians ?

Everything holds on the weather. It was bad for germnay from March onward: the March/April turn saw no rain and lasted four impulses. If the September turn does the same, then the Germna are likely toast. If bad weather settle, then germany may have up to four turn to rebuild a serious defense.

Bad weather might help the Germans on the Western Front, but snow will bring no relief in the East, unless it makes the USSR over-cautious.

No, the USSR won't be over-cautious, but the western allies are worth about half the damage done, and winter will still lessen the damage suffered by Germany because ground strikes are less effective and not all Russian units are not elite. Furthermore, bad weather means less impulses, so less overall damage.

So sure, a strong winter would bring relief.

In the West, the British provide strong resistance.
Advancing there is unlikely. Singapore is well guarded.

In Calcutta, the British fleet is idle and not very strong, but it is threatening. It can reach the South China sea where many economic interests lie. But trying to go and attack it is a rsiky business with the US fleet in Brisbane.

On the 4th september impulse, while Germany gets some relief due to the rain in the artic zone, but frantically tries to salvage a defense line in France, Japan continues to advance in China : Sian is captured after a reasonably successful artillery preparation.
Note that this result is lucky (10% chance for 23+), but the actual chance of capturing the city was still 32%. How long the Japanese will keep it remains a mystery : The Chinese have little reasons to retreat : their forces are still strong in the are, and the mountains provide good protection. A nearby city also provides direct supply.

The USA take a naval move to shuttle some troops through the Atlantic.
Furthermore, their best land units are disorganized in France, on the front line : there is little they could do.

They also try and rescue a marine div that had ventured a bit too far.

The rescue is a complete failure.

The British now alternate their naval move. In the previous impulse, a successful breakthrough forced a new German retreat ; now the US can act a little in France but moving fleets is becoming also necessary for the Commonwealth which has units waiting on the British shores and in Canada. Reorganizing the convoys line through the mediterranean is also necessary to exploit the new resources from France and Italy.

In the process, the Commonwealth also launches a sub attack in the South China Sea.

The attacks comes as a surprise despite the rather good air protection.

Japan stays, but is unlucky enough that the subs find the convoys again, with increased surprise!

This vacates the sea area from all convoy and could be a sore blow to the Japanese economy : there are not many convoys in reserve : too many were sent for supply duty.

The British stay, and hope to catch the Japanese planes.
But they are surprised ; badly.
As they survive the first round, the British decide to retreat from the combat : there is little to gain by staying.

The axis is unlucky ; at impulse 9, the turn goes on after Japan brings back its last remaining 4 convoys. Worse: the weather again turns good everywhere, including the artic.

September 43 might be the doom for Germany if the allies manage more than one breakthrough.

...

Miraculeously, the allies launch 6 attacks, and none rolls better than 11. As a result, Germany loses some hexes but no unit!

Nevertheless, even though there still are some defense lines, the turn destructions are even worst for Germany than those of the previous turn! In addition, resources where lost, and new French partisans appear in Metz.

For Japan, everything works well, with the allies pusshing so hard west that they only do the minimum against Japan.

Amazing how lopsided the casualties get, once the Allies have strategic superiority/dominance.
