Status: offline 		How do I update the steam version with the most recent patch? I tried installing the patch and it said I needed a serial key to do it. But steam does not provide serial keys with their copies...

Status: offline 		Steam automatically updates your version to the latest patch. So no need to worry about downloading files.

Regarding the beta versions, I'm not sure. But with the official releases, Steam does it for you

Status: offline 		If this is during the beta opt in after you go to properties just click ok.
