Just read an article on the movie FURY. I am not looking forward to it. Sounds like it'll be god awful to watch. The first time I saw SAVING PRIVATE RYAN I couldn't speak for an hour afterward. That's right I said the first time. The first time I see a really good movie I miss all kinds of stuff and have to go back. I had to go to Jurassic park three or four times before I heard the music, really. It has a dozen real Shermans in it and one real Tiger (didn't say if it was a I or a II).

I was totally sold on MASTER AND COMMANDER when you could hear the incoming cannon balls going whu whu whu whu ... That's because one side is red hot and the other cold and as it rotates you hear it make that sound. I took someone to see it at another theatre, but their sound system wasn't good enough and you couldn't make it out.

Good point witpqs!

Listen geofflambert, when you visit the cinema in future best not to be off your face on illegal substances.

Well I could use "off yer t*ts" if you prefer, though I thought that a tad vulgar.

I did not like they way the talked in the trailer. Pitt and his tank crew talked like people from 1990s or 2000s. They did not sound like folks from 1940s to me.

A#1 all round GREAT movie. Yes, it is a movie so the story gets a bit contrived, but very authentic look and feel. Great to see a movie that does not paint the US Armed Forces of World War II as some kind of fantasy concept Boy Scouts.

However, promo story is flat out wrong. It's not the story of a lone tank behind enemy lines. It's the story of a tank platoon that becomes part of an infantry company and then get's detached as a screening force for the division flank. The actual story is better than the promo.

Of course some folks are going to hate it, that's their business, I just loved it! See the movie and make your own decision.

Well if the commercial is to be believed a Tiger I with a short 88mm got a direct hit on a Sherman side armor (glorified soda can)and the Sherman lived to fight another day. Sorry, despite any other merits the movie might have there is only so much historical inaccuracy I can preserver.

Well that is about what I suspected.

It was filmed by a British film crew so it goes without saying that would have a very authentic look and feel.

It was the Hollywood plot we were a apprehensive about as it would totally undermine the opportunity of a great film accurately portraying an aspect of the war largely ignored before this.

Glad you liked it. Looks like there might be some hope!!!!

Saw the movie last night. It was not a bad movie. Purist will nit pick it though I am sure of that. The hit on the Sherman was a glancing blow in the movie. The other two tanks in the scene brewed up as expected. The final battle scene is where people will have questions as they defend a cross roads against a SS battalion and there tanks treads are disabled.

My daughters liked it they are 14 and 17. It worked well as a platform to discuss what was actually happening at that time in the war and some of the tactics used in tank warfare. Plus nobody named Rafe was in this movie.

The movie is well worth a watch. I went in expecting to be disappointed, but the action sequences are excellent and the acting is good ... final showdown is a little over the top, but IMO this is a really solid war movie.

You want to see a contrived Hollywood plot watch Braveheart again. Mel Gibson paints his face with woad (last seen being used by Ancient Britons) and makes Scottish independence speeches like he was a 1776 New England democrat. The English play the Nazis in the film but ride in on warhorses rather than Tiger tanks. Gibson somehow infiltrates the enemy lines and gets into position to cuckold the English king (that would be like Roosevelt getting into Berchtesgarten and making out with Eva Braun I guess) Oh, and the Scots defend a crossroads against overwhelming odds.

Finally, Frodo casts the ring into... EDIT Wrong film.

From what folks on the thread are saying Fury sounds like its in a much better class of film.

I had the impression from the trailers that at some point "Fury" got refitted with a British 76mm long barrel. Is that correct?

The US Army never operated 17lb'er Fireflies.

However there were some models of Shermans (always in short supply) that were equipped with American 76mm guns.

M4A1(76)W, some M4A3E2 "Jumbo" and M4A3E8(76)W "Easy Eight".

I've never been a "tank guru" , but the 1st time I saw the trailer , the former "recco-instructer" in me mumbled "easy-8". (All that means is that it triggered a subconscious comparison to all the Sherman photo's I've seen , and in a split second look I thought that it most resembled the E-8 Sherman variant)
. In other words , my quick gut feeling. So please don't sue me or issue a jihad or fatwa if I'm wrong. I'm just saying......

If I remember right, The E8 variant added extra protection around the turrent. Anyway, just got home from seeing "Fury". Was a very good movie. I would see it again. Yes there was an issue with the Tiger shot. But, At that stage of the war, the ammo manufactured was questionable, Slave labor and all. Also, one of the previews was for a new movie named "Unforgotten". without going online to look at it, It looks like a True Story about a B-24 crew shot down in the pacific and captured by the Japanese. Looks good and my daughter said she read the story a year or two ago and wants to see it....GP

Here is a clip of the Tiger vs Sherman tank scene in the movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FymIXRr3HF0

I also found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV7TRLpCM48

50,000 Shermans to kill 1,500 Tigers it says in this other clip. Is that true?

I think they were killed mainly by P-47s and tank killers etc.
