Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot". 2nd Wave unloaded returning back to Perth.

Quiet night. Martin did not send his bombers at night.

AF reach level 6.10

Transports ships with 2nd wave turn back to base.
24th and 7th US Divisions will attack tomorrow positions of 110th and 52nd IJA divisions supported by 41st Regiment and 4th Ind. Mixed Reg.
My troops are low on supplies, on other side 52nd, 41st and 4th were heavy beaten at Tjiatjap. I am hoping for very little resistance.

It seems whole Japanese fleet is park at Merak, including carriers. ???
I am going to move US Carriers to intercept position in case he decide came my side of Island and still staying 8 hex out of Batavia's CAP.

South Pacific HQ: Operation "Tiny steps".

VMO-155(15 F6F-3) and VMF-221(18 F6F-3) sweep Kavieng. Martin set LRCAP over port with ~20 Ki-84a. My Hellcats scored 5 Franks and lost 2 planes due crash landing.

Shortlands and Buka are bombed by 200 medium bombers as practice target on daily base.
All 4e set to fix planes and rest crews.

How many Command HQs did you bring with you to Java?? If they are teamed up with a Corp/Army HQ AND the dice gods are on your side, that extra 90% adjusted AV can really help.

Bandoeng - One of the few bases on Java that cannot be attacked from sea and is a mountain hex. This base may be very difficult to capture.

CD units - I hope you brought some to Java. You will need them to ruin the aim of some BB TFs that will soon be coming at your bases.

I think you've made a mistake in not cutting the rail line NE of Tjilatjap - Java remains a single front for the Japanese, and they can rail troops and planes around the island with ease.

I have 3 HQ. SW Pacific, 6th Army, 1st Corp. Are you talking about magic bonus ? I know everyone is talking about but nobody really saw it :D
I cannot afford to wait another 500 turns got it ;)

I have mines, I have 30+ PTs, 30 Warships, I have carriers with full load of planes. KB is shown to 3 carriers action ready. So his BB are welcome to visit.

That the reason I will go around with 2 Divisions and 500 tanks.

In 2 -3 days AF will be level 9 and I will start cleaning sky over island. 75 P-47 with pilots exp 80+ is just sitting and waiting for action.

Actually I want him to rail his troop to north Java. This the reason why 1st US Corps is pushing north. I have 2 more US Corps in hand, one is loading on APAs right now with 100% prep and will land on south Java soon.

As an American of the Cold War period, I am just very thankful that Mr Kane did not lead the Warsaw Pact armed forces.

Bombing Spidery's oil may not be immediately fatal, but it is sure going to make things miserable. Lost tankers, additional escort, lost crude oil, and lots and lots of fighters on CAP will just make things tough. When the DEI is this compromised in mid-1943, I give Spidery about another year before Mr Kane is handed another laurel wreath.

That is not all that Mr. Kane is really doing here IMO. He has made a large splash in the DEI and drawn Spidrey's attention and drawn his forces over to the west most part of the map. It is drawing troops about as far away from the home islands as they can get.

If the allies can secure a foothold on Puerto Principe or a few of the bases just to the west they can almost cut off any traffic flowing from Malaya/Sumatra to Japan. An amphibious assault near Cam Rahn Bay finishes that embargo. I believe that the quiet steps Mr. Kane is taking north of Australia will have an even further damaging effect upon the Japanese economy, naval shipping, etc.

It is likely that any reinforcements heading for these areas are now being diverted to the seemingly more priority areas of Java.

If the Allies gain a naval and/or air superiority between Java and the home islands the Japanese troops there can be isolated and destroyed at leisure, mostly out in the open.

Strategically it is brilliant :}

I arrived to this world to late for that ;) Anyway my application to Military Academy was rejected due health issue. ( problems with colors ).

Starting this invasion I had three targets in my mind:
1. Destroy KB
2. AF lvl 9 DEI
3. Make my opponent busy in DEI before real offensive.

1st & 2nd are already completed. Base on my observations of Spidery reactions and amount of his warships in area. I can assume that 3rd is not out reach for me either.

That was not a good exchange for the Japanese... 1/4 - 1/3 of both it's Cruiser and Battleships with no real reinforcements on the horizon.

Right on! And Japan cannot afford the loss of 9 big DDs either. Sub crews will cheer the loss of 4 E's, but I think Japan can convert some ships to E's to make up.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot". - Empire Strike Back

Ok, It seems Spidery send at night all ships available, BB, CA, CL, DD, PB, E etc ...
Most of his ships where detected by allied radars and due max visibility 2000y most engagements starts at range 3000y with Japan crew being surprised by Allied ships. However battles shows huge advantage in experience on Japanese side. BTW. Hero of night was BB Ise, it passes next to BB Massachusetts and BB South Dakota heavy damaging both completely unspotted by my BB. Summarizing both BB Massachusetts and BB South Dakota perform poorly that night. The same can be say about all my PT performance.

Additionally SS Haddock put one torp into Kongo class BB. I have noticed sound of a few mines exploding during night.

Martin decide go for all. So at morning total ~80 N1K1 and 35 Ki-84a sweep sky over my AF. They meet strong CAP: 12 Spit Mk Vc, 37 P-38, 69 P-39, 33 P-40 and 16 F4F. Shooting down 22 N1K1 and 14 Ki-84a cost me 26 P-39, 11 F4F, 2 Spits and 2 P-38.

Total toll of day was 65 Japan planes for 60 Allied.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot". - Empire went home.

I have noticed that after nigh butchery most Japan ships were docking at Batavia. Acting in revenge madness I set 36 Spits and 75 Bolts to sweep Batavia next day. They should be supported be 50 P-38 on LRCAP. Additional I move US carriers to strike at ships in area. Well as usually it did not went as planned. Firstly of all I set all my DB to Navy Search. :(

But this time my P-47 did not fail me. They arrive before strike package, and they did very well. Spitfires and P-38 scored 11 kills for 9 Spits and 7 P-38, next P-47 scored 61 Jap fighters without single lost.

Day toll is: 72 Jap, 32 Ally.

My carriers send several strikes with only TBF, but I cannot complain for result here.
They sunk 5 AK,AKL, and they put 3 torps into "hero of last night" BB Ise, 1 into Nagato, 1 into DD Arare and 2 torps and 8 500lbs bombs into BB Haruna.

Additionally APD Akikaze was hit by torpedo form SS Amberjack, near Balikpapan.

Mr. Kane scares me

+1 I would certainly not be a challenge for him!

Love the way he composed his TFs - matching ship types and keeping them small enough to be manageable in battle.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot". - P-47 Havoc

One more convoy unloaded. 600K Supplies and 340K fuel in place.
AF is now LVL 9. USAAF Bombers groups 11th, 7th, 5th, 43rd, 307th and 308th just landed on Java. 250 B-24 & B-17 in few days will be ready to start destroying Japanese Oil wells. P-47 are continuing cleaning sky, score is very nice 9:1. 126 enemy fighters, mostly N1K1 for 13 Bolts.

Lexi was torpedoed by Jap sub. It still can stay in action, 15 system & 21 flood damage. Spidery is sending all subs he still has. My escort ships already sunk over 15 Japs subs for beginning operation.

Spidery send all he still have to bombard my units on others side island. I suffer 400 man total loss and at morning my TBF scored one torpedo on Hiei.
It seems that it was the last Japanese BB action ready :)

South Pacific HQ: Operation "Tiny steps".

2nd Marine Division reached Kavieng. 1st and tanks are 2 days delayed.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot" - Beginning of the end.

80 B-24 bombed at night Balikpapan, result 3 B-24 down, 2 enemy fighters down and 74 oil centers destroyed.

Big sweep over Soerabaja. 34th FG (P-47) and fighters from Sara, Lexi and Big E fly mission over city. 113 Franks, 16 Gorges, 7 Oscars shot down for 13 Thunderbolts and 6 Hellcats. At this rate he should give up air control over Java in week or two.

South Pacific HQ: Operation "Tiny steps" - Kavieng.

Usually bomb drops all over area.

Crikey! That massive surface action off Tjilitap must have truly been the mother of all combat replays. The whole kitchen sink thrown in and batted away!

Certainly better than them getting sunk at arms' reach by carrier aircraft......better that they go down fighting...

Hummmmm, keep this up and the IJN will be down to throwing rocks from row boats by September.

Given the exchanges in Java, I have to revise my war end date from Summer 44 to February 44. Like others have noted, I don't think I've ever seen such an all in surface engagement(s)since I joined the Forum.

Always educational reading Mr. Kane's reports. Enough detail to tickle the imagination with "wow, how could I assemble this".

Please keep us updated. The quote below appropriately describes the results shown:

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

Bad weather grounded 5th USAAF bombers for 2 days.

Yorktown, Essex and Hornet Hellcats together with 51st FG sweep Soerabaja again. Japanese pilots in N1K1 were did not sell they life cheaply this time. Both sides lost ~30 planes.

South Pacific HQ: Operation "Tiny steps" - Kavieng.

SS Steelhead introduced US "working" torpedoes to CL "Kinu" scoring one hit. Cruiser was already damaged and I am assuming it will sunk soon.

And usually bombing all over area.

Central Pacific HQ: Operation "Shortcut" is came to start.

Empty transports and Taskforce 141(2 CV, 4 CVL) left PH and are sailing to Tarawa to pickup invasion force and next assault Kusaie Island.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot" - Java

Oil centers destroyed total count: 118

Night raid of 5th USAAF bombers at Palembang ended with 44 oils center destroyed and 13 fighters(Ki-43-IV, Ki-44-a) shot down.

Java's rail lines cut in half. I think now most of troops already are in North part of island. Two US divisions will secure north flank. All others just turn back to south. Main target: Shipyard. ;)
