Good news for wargamers -- Ubi Soft is resuming the SSI brand, which will publish several games this year including Harpoon 4.

Here's the news link --

Oh, brother. Another torpedo hits the side of my wargaming youth cargo ship.

I'm just hoping they won't spoil H4 and make it like Fleet Command..

Yeah, Destroyer Command did more harm than good to their reputation. It suffered a few bugs and stupid AI. It just didn't give me the feeling. You know whay I mean.:)

Bah!

I've been waiting for H4 since my kids were in diapers.

*IF* or *WHEN* it ever ships, it will have to fight against H2/Admirals edition which has been cleaned up and ported to Windows/Mac as H3 by a little private group. It has already been stated that H4 will cover only a very limited area of the world, so while it has a facelift on the graphics side, the content has be dramatically reduced. If they have shifted it into an arcade game, then it's a dead product before it even hits the shelves.

It was pretty bad in my opinion. In the first cut the DDs were so accurate that it was impossible to survive. And the hardcoded campaign path was equally a pain in the rear. You couldn't start anywhere but the beginning and had to keep doing the mission over and over until you got it completed to the game's satisfaction - no matter how stupid it was (like the C&C campaigns).

I was hoping it would be a much updated and improved Aces of the Deep but it was a sad disappointment.:(

Yeah, I got goin on SSI cause I was soooo pissed at SH2. The little I played Destroyer Command made me think it was the same sh1t as SH2. Both are crap.

(Phew nice to vent on that one again.):)

Never have so many been lead a stray by so few than those who bought DC and SH2. Pray that it is not true with H4

aye aye..

I still have my copies of the GNB series, and of course the Steel panthers series.

If the REAL SSI comes back it's a good thing.. if it is a joke like Janes became at the end... then bleh.

How about these, guys:

Modern remakes of some old C-64 greats by SSI:

Computer Ambush

Mech Brigade

The 'Nam

even, dare I say: Six Gun Shootout!

As has been said, if SSI came back as it was before, focused on quality wargames and sims, that'd be great, but can it being owned by Ubi?

well, Tom Clancy's Red Storm is developed by Ubi.. and the Rainbow6, and Ghost recon series was by Ubi. Ubi did an EXCELLENT job with these titles. Ghost Recon being extremelly realistic, detail driven, and extremelly well thought out.

They HAVE the ability.. just have to see whther they are willing to sacrifice quality to achieve quantity.

I'm afraid H4 is going to be a big disappointment. I was following some of their forum when they opened it not long ago and some of the answers that the developers were providing made me feel like SH2, DC and Fleet Command all over again. example... with "fog of war" enabled if the player chooses to view an unknown contact in the 3d view the actual class or aircraft type will be displayed. This cheat was described by the developer as one which he hoped players would use the "honor system". Even Fleet Command displayed a generic ship or plane until sensors could indentify the contact. It makes me appreciate companies like Matrix that make war games not arcade games disguised as a war game. I played Harpoon for hours with guys on my ship. It was a great game. Harpoon remains one of my all time favorites and its legacy will most likely be diminished by the release of H4. H4 is going to be a Naval wargamers Daiktaina I'm afraid.

Multiplayer could be fun, but I'm picking it up for single player primarily. To each his own.

I have fond memories of Harpoon.

Playing it for many a long hour on my humble Amiga, waiting several minutes for the screen to update.

I wait with baited breath to see how this latest incarnation turns out.

The return of SSI eh.

Hmmmm.

My comment will possibly be somewhat isolated, but it matters a bit I suppose.

Who is Ubi?

I clearly have never been excited about anything else they have ever done.

So why do they need the SSI brand name? Or is this like Hasbro trying to sell me Computer Squad Leader?

Since Joel Billings was the founder of SSI, I wonder if he has any comments on the revivial?

I'd be curious to hear a short history of SSI. I remember buying an SSI game Bismark I believe on cassette tape for the Apple II... Then I got a Floppy Drive and pirated from a friends. Sorry Joel I hope you forgive me after all these years.

I found aout about wargaming and learned to love it through SSI's games. A history would be great, especially about the genesis of some of the games. Thanks, Joel!

Hey, I was right there with you. Computer Bismarck was my fist computer war game. Then Computer Ambush, and then ..... all SSI. Remember Cosmic Balance?

sigh..

I was in EB yesterday and all the area for PC games has shrunk to half a wall. Play Station and X-box are driving us true war gamers out. Thank goodness for companies like Matrix and 2by3.

My SSI collection is HUGE...I have not thrown away a single box. Before the internet I even called SSI's answering machine from Sweden where a pre-recorded message would tell me about upcoming games....

That's cuz the boxes are now a quarter of the size!

How exactly did the industry manage to all get on the same page with that one? I liked when PC games stood out from their PS2 counterparts due to sheer size alone!

I'll drink to that. I liked the big boxes, cause they had the big manuals you could actually read. I've still got the manual for Falcon 4.0. I parted with the game, I just couldn't part with that beautiful manual. Sigh.....
