Summary of Operations 3/26/44 (continued)

Indian Ocean: Japanese TF detected and visible on game map in open sea area SE of Great Nicobar (hex location 38, 68). No Allied ships or submarines operating in immediate vicinity of this hex location, this location also beyond range of Allied naval search planes from Ceylon or mainland India.

AAR of Jap amphibious landing operation at Port Blair – no detected Jap LCU or TF in Port Blair base hex. This appears to be a synch bug though I’m estimating there’s some chance it’s not. Current intelligence information has Jap 5th Infantry Division based in Singapore. AAR follows.

Current situation map of eastern New Guinea follows along with listing of all identified Japanese LCU in this region. Pillager has committed significant Japanese ground units in this area of New Guinea – bad news for Allied SW Pacific theatre forces, good news elsewhere. Allied supply situation in this area expected to have some element of difficulty even with stockpiles in Port Moresby. Pillager’s Japanese supply situation in this area of New Guinea likely to eventually turn impossible given the number of Jap LCU and likely rate of supply consumption (from both ground and air activity) plus the probable flow of Japanese supply points into the area. Overall Japanese logistics in eastern New Guinea is running at an almost certain deficit. A major part of my overall strategy target and interdict detected Japanese logistics/supply activity into this area to the greatest extent possible. Starve then destroy…

Total known Japanese LCU in eastern New Guinea area shown above – 51 detected, 37 identified

• Nadzab (4 detected Jap LCU, none identified)

• Finschhafen (no Jap LCU currently detected, 1 identified) – 14 Base Force

• Lae (11 detected Jap LCU, 5 identified) – 5 Independent SNLF Co, HQ 4 Air Army, 63 Construction Bn, 19 & 23 Field AF Construction Bns

• Wau (8 detected Jap LCU, all identified) – Bandasan SNLF, 64th Infantry Group, 37th Infantry Division, 82nd Naval Guard Unit, elements 13th Independent Mixed Rgt, elements 24th Independent Mixed Bde, 26 JNAF AF Unit, 2 JAAF AF Bn

• Salamaua (9 detected Jap LCU, 4 identified) – 7 Independent SNLF Co, 205 & 205 JAAF AF Bns, 2 JNAF AF Unit

• Coastal hex between Salamaua & Buna (1 detected Jap LCU, none identified)

• Buna (18 detected Jap LCU, 19 identified) – four infantry divisions (13th, 47th, 64th, 1st Guards), four SNLF (Maizuru 1, 19 & 83 Naval Gd, 8 Independent SNLF Co), 3 Cavalry Brigade, 3 Independent Heavy Artillery Bn, two flak units (55 Field AA Bn, 23 Field Machine Cannon Co), three construction engineer units (62 Construction Bn, 14 & 17 Naval Construction Bns), four base force LCU (69 JAAF AF Bn, 7 & 8 Base Force, 32 Special Base Force). One of the identified Jap LCU above in Buna has either left Buna but still reported to be there, or this LCU remains in Buna but undetected – this to be sorted out shortly.

The US xAK torpedoed in the action below is undamaged, also no ASW ordnance fired by SC-637. Still… several US surface ASW TF being dispatched into the sea area W of San Francisco to locate and attack the I-2 if the sub itself proves not to be a synch bug. AAR follows.

Indian Ocean: Jap TF detected last game turn in open sea area SE of Great Nicobar no longer visible on game map,

Japanese capture Port Blair without combat in probable amphibious operation. One Jap LCU (probably 5th Infantry Division) is detected in Port Blair. Not a synch bug after all.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 140 aircraft (all fighters), no Jap TF or ships in port, light industry 9(32), refinery 96(105), 14 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) –143 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 143(158), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU.

Allied night bombing raid on Magwe oil production facilities by 2E and 4E bombers – the raid producing some additional damage to oil production in Magwe (above). Allied plane losses include 5 USAAF B-24D Liberator (1 flak, 4 ops) and 1 RAF Liberator III (ops). Six Japanese Ki-54 Nick CAP fighters reported destroyed (5 air-to-air, 1 ops). A very slow rate of recovery for damaged Allied planes affecting both 2E and 4E bombers based in Calcutta has seriously impacted air operations over Burma – despite more than sufficient supply and aviation support resources available in Calcutta. I have had sync bug issues that resulted in a report of a ship hitting a reef at place X, but there were no ships there. So I checked around the map and found a ship of a different name with the grounding damage at a different location, of course.
This suggests that the sub attack you saw may have happened, but to a different TF in a different location.
It is handy to click on the "list of active ships" button and sort by flotation damage to find if there are any new cripples.

Good point. Another thing to add here is also check your Sunk Ships listing to see other ships that had been sunk (in the event the ship in the synch bug action is sunk rather than damaged).

For the incident I posted above, it turned out the synch bug action did not occur elsewhere and was a completely false alarm. I did check the Active Ships listing for xAK with flotation damage. There were two xAK on the list but I accounted for both of them from previous incidents (both xAK involved in earlier ship collisions). I'll have 1-2 ship collisions in a month (sometimes none) - this a result of using large transport TF (25-30 ships +) as general practice in my convoy system. Collisions in this situation basically a cost of doing business. Usually one of the two ships in a collision has significant (usually moderate) damage requiring extensive shipyard repair, the second ship with lighter damage. Having experienced a dozen or so ship collisions to date in this campaign, I've yet to have a ship sunk from one.

Yeah, I have seen small ships like AMcs sink from collision damage but not bigger ones. Came close with one of the 1700 ton capacity xAKLs that collided twice in the same turn and ended up with 65 flotation damage.
It was a long slow creep back to port at cruise speed of two knots. Thanks to low system damage the flooding did not increase during this trial run for Carnival Cruise Line.

Hi again wneumann, I need some help; I played the Coral Sea scenario as the allies yesterday, and when I tried to select the carrier and Port Moresby bound TFs for my Dive bombers and torpedo bombers to attack, I kept getting a message saying "LRCAP only may target TF" even when they were in range, and essentially I had to leave it up to the various bomber squadron commanders discretion to attack the Japanese carriers, but I had no problem sending my strike planes against the Japanese ships landing at Tulagi, so whats the deal?

+1. Or moving at 3 kts or 5 kts. Come to think of it, floating drydocks (ARD) move at just about the same speed. Having moved two of them from the US West Coast to Auckland. Needless to say, both of these travelled over a long scenic route as they cannot get out of their own way, let alone the Japs.

Not sure if this fully answers your question but it appears as if you're attempting to target detected/visible Japanese TF with your carrier planes. AE doesn't provide a capability to target specific detected enemy TF for air strikes (this true for both carrier and land based aircraft). Only land targets can be specifically selected for an air strike. The best you can do is set your bomber/torpedo air units to Naval Strike and any fighters you're sending with them to an Escort mission. Set range on all of them > 0 (this being the range out to which they will attack a target). Also include some planes doing a Naval Search mission over the enemy TF you're interested in targeting (enemy TF need to be spotted before they're attacked). For any fighter squadrons you're assigning to escort bombers - set CAP to some value < 100, the CAP value representing how many planes in the fighter squadrons will remain behind to defend the carrier, the difference between your CAP value and 100 how many fighter planes will go out as escorts with the strike mission. Make sure you leave enough fighters over your carriers to take on anything your opponent (AI or human) is sending your way at the same time. Hope this helps. Other readers certainly welcome to chime in.

Correction... Set range > 0, negative values not possible or allowed in AE.

Coastwatcher Report: xAK Sanura Maru reported in port at Luganville
Coastwatcher Report: 1 ship in port at Tanna
Coastwatcher sighting: 3 Japanese ships at 106,125 near Rabaul, Speed unknown
Coastwatcher sighting: 2 Japanese ships at 106,125 near Rabaul, Speed unknown
Coastwatcher sighting: 1 Japanese ship at 114,138 near Lunga, Speed unknown
Coastwatcher sighting: 4 Japanese ships at 106,125 near Rabaul, Speed unknown

Central Pacific: Two 3/28 Sigint entries reporting intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. Detected status of Kwajalein shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Another 3/28 Sigint entry reports intercepted radio signals from unknown Jap TF at sea in hex location 127, 126 (due N of Nauru Is). No visible Japanese ships on map at this hex location. Some possibility this “sighting” could be related to another 3/28 Sigint entry indicating a ship (AMC Bankok Maru) is moving to Tabiteuea.

Mainland US: Eight USAAF fighter squadrons scheduled for permanent withdrawal on 3/31/44 disbanded this game turn – this action breaking down most fighter pilot training activity for USAAF in the mainland US. About 260 fighter pilots in various stages of training plus squadron commanders were removed from the squadrons and placed in reserve pools before disbanding the air units. A byproduct of the fall of China was establishment of a considerable USAAF pilot training operation in Southeast Asia (rear-area bases in mainland India plus off-map bases in Capetown and Aden), air units for training activity here drawn from (otherwise idle) 10th and 14th USAAF squadrons currently in reserve status pending somewhere to profitably employ them in front-line operations. Training pilots released from the disbanded squadrons will eventually be absorbed into 10th and 14th USAAF fighter training units as these units have vacant pilot slots. There are currently 900+ fully trained USAAF fighter pilots (70+ Air and Strafing skills, 60+ experience) in Reserve pilot pool ready for front line service – this number excluding pilots now assigned to front-line theatre squadrons. What I’m experiencing at this point of this campaign is not a shortage of available Allied air units but airfield capacity (particularly in front-line areas) to fly these planes from. Rather than completely idling all these air units, pilot training has evolved into a large-scale “cottage” industry across all nationalities and branches of service.

Australia: US CV Yorktown & four Northhampton class CA completed scheduled 10/43 and 11/43 ship upgrades. These ships will be rotated back into active operations with US Main Carrier force.

DEI: Several US patrol submarines transferred from Colombo to Perth begin operations in sea areas inside the DEI. Pillager has entry points into DEI interior sea areas from the west and south well defended with Japanese surface & air ASW forces and/or mines. Allied patrols subs were transferred to Australia to infiltrate DEI interior sea areas from the east (Australia) via lightly or undefended entry points. AAR below is a contact from the first US patrol sub entering the DEI from the east using Darwin as a refueling point.

Summary of Operations 3/29/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 800K, fuel 47K.

Current status of Terapo base – 46K supply on hand, airfield service damage 5, no runway damage. AAR’s of latest Japanese air and ground bombardment attacks on 8th Australian Division at Wau follow. Current estimate of the ground situation at Wau is a stalemate – neither Allied or Japanese LCU in Wau can mount an effective ground attack against the other for various reasons. Supply situation of 8th Australian Division in Wau does not permit a ground assault to capture Wau. 8 Division is at 98% TOE strength with only a very small number of disabled elements, its main difficulty supply – the division quite capable of defending its position but unable at the moment to attack effectively. My view is simply the presence of 8 Division in Wau base hex alone puts the overall Japanese ground position along coastal hexes in this area in some degree of jeopardy, especially the Buna/Salamaua area. Pillager doesn’t appear to be capable (at least for the moment) of launching a substantial Japanese counterattack on 8 Division in Wau with available forces.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – no reported Japanese planes or airfield damage, no Jap TF or ships in port, 19 Jap LCU. Seven Jap LCU remain detected in Salamaua, one LCU in the coastal hex between Buna and Salamaua (hex location 99, 128).

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – unidentified Jap aircraft shown in Lae, 2 Jap TF (20 ships total, mostly small ship types), 10 Jap LCU.

Sigint entry for 3/29 reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from undetected Japanese TF at sea off Gasmata (hex location 104, 128)

US sub Scamp sinks W of Gasmata (hex location 101, 127) while returning to base after bomb hit damage from attack by Jap ASW air patrol.

Two less than spectacular naval air strikes attempted by an Australian 2E torpedo bomber squadron, probably against Japanese ship targets in Lae base hex. None of the RAAF bombers made it through air-to-air combat and reached position to attack – thus we’ll never know exactly what Japanese ships the strikes were intended to attack. All 12 Beaufort VIII planes in the squadron destroyed, many apparent ops losses as fewer pilots than planes were lost. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 3/29/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 3/29 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Gardner Is. Detected status of Gardner Is shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Another 3/29 Sigint entry reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio signals from Babeldaob, detected status of the base showing no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-73 (38 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes two LCU (I Corps Combat Engineer Rgt, 671 Tank Destroyer Bn) for SW Pacific, one US Navy VF squadron (purchased from destroyed air units, previously aboard a CVE sunk during Port Moresby invasion), 142K supply and 15K fuel.

USAAF Pilot training: Partially trained fighter pilots released into Reserve pilot replacement pool from permanently withdrawn USAAF training squadrons in mainland US being rapidly absorbed into other pilot training squadrons as fully trained pilots are being rotated out of these units and vacant pilot slots are open. Training squadrons still in operation include reserve units in 10th & 14th USAAF plus reserve squadrons in other theatres. Locations of these training squadrons include rear-area bases in mainland India, southern Australia and New Zealand along with several off-map base locations (Aden, Capetown).

Pilots with < 60 experience and both Air & Strafing skill levels at 70+ being absorbed into fighter squadrons flying CAP over larger rear-area bases (i.e, Sydney, Auckland,. Calcutta). This “tier” of pilot training intended to increase experience level to > 65.

Dedicated pilot training squadrons for Escort mission are receiving pilots with < 70 Air skill level. Priority of pilots entering Escort mission training squadrons given to partially trained pilots with Strafing skill level already at 70+ and Air skill at < 70 (pilots with Air skill closest to 70 going first for most rapid completion of both Air and Strafing skill level training).

Dedicated pilot training squadrons for Strafing mission are receiving pilots with < 70 Strafing skill level. Priority of pilots entering Escort mission training squadrons given to partially trained pilots with Air skill level already at 70+ and Strafing skill at < 70 (pilots with Strafing skill closest to 70 going first for most rapid completion of both Air and Strafing skill level training).

Partially trained pilots with both Air and Strafing skills below 70 will be picked up last, these pilots entering either an Escort or Strafing mission training squadron depending on first available pilot slot vacancies.

The training re-entry priority outlined above consistent with a common system of fighter pilot training I currently employ across all nationalities and service branches – including USAAF, USN and Marines, Australia, New Zealand , British (including all RAF, naval and Indian air arms), Dutch and Chinese air forces. Air Combat and Strafing pilot training in this system run in parallel (rookie pilots start in either an Air or Strafing training squadron, then rotate into the other as they reach 70+ skill level) – pilots completing both Air and Strafing training (70+ skill in each) then transfer into fighter air units operating CAP missions over rear-area bases to get experience rating to 65+. It’s unlikely Pillager will see an Allied fighter pilot (any nationality or branch of service) in combat with Experience, Air and Strafing skill levels below the minimum values indicated above.

Pilot training schemes involving extensive cross-training in multiple skills are also in full operation for bombing and other pilots across all nationalities and service branches – including specialized pilots for LBA ground and naval attack, dive bombing and torpedo attack (both carrier and LBA), patrol (naval search). In many cases the pilot training structure has been enhanced beyond the descriptions of Allied pilot training I posted here some time ago.

Australia: Transport convoy EX-65 (20 ships) arrives from Eastern US. Cargo aboard the convoy includes one US Marine 2E bomber squadron, 79K supply and 200 fuel. Smaller xAK in the convoy are being detached to remain in Australia for use in short range cargo transport operations within South/SW Pacific theatre areas.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) –122 aircraft (all fighters), no reported airfield damage, oil production 143(158), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU. No change from last game turn.

RAF 2E bombers hit Magwe airfield in a night raid. No reported damage to Magwe airfield or Jap planes lost, though a few Japanese supply points are possible casualties. Two RAF Blenheim IV planes lost (both flak). Combat Events report entry and AAR’s follow.

Manchuria: Sigint entry for 3/29 reports Jap 15 Tank Regiment now located at Moho in northern Manchuria along border with USSR (hex location 112, 27). This report only significant in that Pillager has transferred several Japanese LCU from the China army to Manchuria, this report the latest known incidence. I’m not estimating Pillager has any intent to attack Russia – this more a defensive measure against the inevitable.

Allied destroyers launch surface naval raid into Rabaul, objective attacking Japanese PB and other small ships being employed as transports between Rabaul and New Guinea. Five Japanese PB and a midget sub reported sunk – 5 additional Jap PB, 1 AK, 2 DD, 2 escorts (E ship type) and 2 LST were hit and damaged. Two of the six Allied DD reported sunk, a third DD heavily damaged and expected to sink. Considering all 5 US DD in this action were 4-stackers, this TF gave a good account of itself. The downfall in this action was a miscalculation of ship endurance – approach of the Allied surface TF into Rabaul was done at full speed along with its exit at dawn, full speed movement exhausting all fuel on the DD leaving them dead in the water when hit in daylight by Jap naval air strikes. The 3 Allied DD expected to possibly survive (2 US Clemsons plus French DD La Triomphant) will hopefully drift southward “with the tide” to a location where they can be safely refueled at sea and recovered. Still, at least some disruption of Pillager’s supply chain into eastern New Guinea was likely accomplished. AAR’s of surface and related air actions follow.

Looking at what you are up against makes me wonder if proceeding up Papua makes any sense. It looks like the enemy is ready for a goal line stand and you do not have Larry Csonka or Bronco Negurski or Jim Brown to run the ball. Might be time to probe other parts of the enemy defense ring to advance the ball where advance is more probable.

As I assess the sitrep against Pillager, the enemy is clearly intending to bottle up SWPAC at Moresby and Milne Bay. So the main question becomes, what is your plan for PNG? What goals do you hope to reach? What strategic end is intended? What happens if you reverse the playing field and leave his troops there to rot and go after the main strategic options another way? (I.E. go up the south side to Sorong). That would require using Darwin as a base, but that would be possible. But is PNG even necessary?

The reason I ask is that Pillager has invested a significant force into the region. That means this force cannot be used elsewhere (like Burma or the Marshalls and Gilberts). Burma may not be an option other than for demonstration. But the Central Pacific cannot be well defended by LCU forces because of the nature of the terrain. The only way to defend the islands is to invest the KB and Mini KB. Tarawa and to a lesser extent Makin, are too far away for Land Based air support, meaning Pillager would have to use the carriers. You could get in and out before he responds and seize both, thus giving bases from which to take the Marshalls, either the A-lingling Kwaj Roi-N islands or the others closer to PH. You don't need to take both sets, one group is able to suppress the other once developed. Then take Eniwetok and the enemy is bottled up in there, unable to respond once the allies have air cover in place. That puts you far closer to Truk or the Marianas. It also may force Pillager to move the forces in PNG back to the Marianas.

To attempt to assault the defensive perimeter Pillager has in place seems to me counterproductive. This area is really the last good area for defense for the enemy until the PI or DEI. In my unasked for opinion, time to think about going around and getting on "ground" that is more favorable to you.

+1. The fact Pillager has jammed a considerable Japanese air and land force into Papua New Guinea has not gone unnoticed. The considerable Jap air and land force in New Guinea also requires large amounts of supply and other support – all the above at the expense of other theatres. Pillager also has to keep up the support in New Guinea. If not, the overall Japanese situation there will likely deteriorate quickly. Basic supply requirements for a large Japanese force plus the small daily increments of airfield damage plus recovery/replacement of damaged or destroyed planes plus recovering disrupted/disabled LCU elements puts considerable pressure on Japanese resources available in front line theatre areas. Pillager may be tying down SW Pacific theatre but he is also tying down himself. Most of what Pillager has sent into New Guinea will likely prove impossible to withdraw.

While Pillager has a large (more or less intact) KB, a large KB also requires significant amounts of fuel and supply to operate it. Only two KB carriers to date have been sunk, both to Allied patrol subs. Pillager also employed KB in the early air battles over Port Moresby with heavy plane losses, particularly fighters. With nearly all the air combat over an Allied controlled Port Moresby, destroyed KB planes also went down with their pilots. Pillager may have lots of carriers, lots of planes, but how good are his carrier pilots? And how much fuel and supply does he have on hand to operate his KB? The KB’s most likely weak spot is their fighter air groups – not in quantities of types of planes aboard the carriers but possibly quality of its fighter pilots. A USN advantage in carrier fighters could be the first of many dominoes to fall in a KB vs US Main Carrier force action. Kill the Jap fighters, getting the bombers becomes a relatively simple task followed by the CV’s themselves. Any surviving KB bombers face 7000+ flak per Air Combat TF.

Pillager has committed much of his available Japanese LBA resources over New Guinea. Facing South Pacific theatre, a small number of H6K4 Mavis were discovered at Luganville plus small number of G3M3 Nells based at an unknown location. Known activity of these Jap planes has been little and infrequent, in many cases the planes flown on naval search and promptly shot down by US fighter CAP over Noumea or Suva.

SW Pacific theatre is only the first pincer. The second pincer is quietly advancing on Luganville and Ndeni – an invasion force just arriving off Luganville probably undetected. Central Pacific awaiting the third pincer. My organization of SW and South Pacific theatres on interior lines also permitting relatively easy transfer of resources between the two theatres. Logistics also a very minor issue.

I’m also strongly suspecting Pillager is trading Japanese forces (rather than territory) for time. Many of the Japanese divisions released from the fall of China have found their way to the Pacific – the Marianas full of them in particular, also several appearing in New Guinea. All these additional Jap LCU make a head on battle of attrition more attractive for Pillager and also more likely I will walk into one. The best solution in a battle of attrition (1) having the more efficient killing machine and (2) using it effectively and at as little cost as possible. In this Allied advance, I’m expecting practically nothing of significance to fall quickly or easily unless Pillager decides to abandon it beforehand (i.e. Noumea).

Summary of Operations 3/31/44

South Pacific: Allied amphibious fleet reaches Luganville in daylight phase, shore bombardment TF goes in. Mine sweepers with the invasion force did not appear to encounter Japanese mines. US Escort Carrier force (12 CVE in six TF) is covering landing operations. US Main Carrier force is sortied and nearby after replenishment at Noumea. 16 US patrol subs deploying into patrol areas S and SE of Truk.

No Allied troops have disembarked into Luganville at this time, timing of the invasion force’s arrival (daylight phase) not allowing any landing activity during this game turn. Landing force includes HQ US XIV Corps with three US divisions (2nd & 3rd Marine, 37th Infantry), 14 NZ Brigade, 131 Combat Engineer Rgt, plus supporting tank and artillery units. No detected Jap LCU or planes visible in Luganville base hex. Possible Japanese LCU opposition on shore from available intelligence data include 38th Infantry Division, Yokosuka 3 SNLF, 28 JNAF AF Unit and 5 Naval Construction Bn. Current intelligence data is up to date only on 28 JNAF Bn, information on the other three Jap LCU reported at Luganville is dated and these units may or may not be there. Given that Jap 38 Division is a veteran unit from China, this action could be the first encounter in the Pacific theatres between a veteran Jap unit from China and US ground forces.

AAR of shore bombardment and USN escort carrier fighter sweep at Luganville follow.

Summary of Operations 4/01/44

South Pacific: Allied ground units now on shore at Luganville. Landing operations proceeded without any significant incident – all LCU elements now ashore with few losses along with 67K supply. Minor disruption of elements in supporting tank and artillery units, all infantry units at or near 100% operational.

22 ships from the invasion force completely unloaded cargo in the initial game turn of landing operations and departing for return to base. Another 21 transports with 28K supply aboard expected to disembark all remaining cargo during next game turn. Landing craft TF with additional supply cargo for Luganville now being prepared in Noumea. Plans are to move construction engineers and additional supply into Luganville once captured and secured by Allied ground forces to begin a process similar to what had been done in Noumea and Port Moresby.

No orders were issued for Allied LCU to launch a ground attack on the initial turn – this done deliberately to utilize higher ship unloading rates (“over the beach”) for at least one additional game turn (see page 128 of the game manual). This action was also taken to properly identify defending Japanese LCU in Luganville before a ground assault plan is formulated. Haste makes waste – time that might be saved in a rapid ground assault on Luganville would be made up for in time and resources required to recover disrupted and destroyed elements in attacking Allied LCU, not to mention cost of replacing said destroyed LCU elements from replacement pools.

AAR’s of night amphibious landing ops follow.

Ground attack bombing strike from a second USAAF 4E bomber force formed and operating in South Pacific theatre. My build-up process included establishing two complete and separate Allied air arms for South and SW Pacific theatres capable of operating “in parallel” – Pillager is now facing a two-headed monster in the LBA air war. The Allied air campaign over New Guinea is continuing with no interruption or decrease of “service”. AAR follows.

Two surviving Allied destroyers from the Rabaul raid still returning to base, a third DD sunk this game turn by Japanese air action. French DD La Triomphant refueled from the small Dutch AO dispatched as a replenishment TF and now moving under power. A US DD from the Rabaul rading force is still out of fuel but moved southward – this DD to refuel from the Dutch AO. Both remaining DD from the Rabaul raiding force expected to pass beyond Japanese air range and continue movement back to Australia for eventual shipyard repair. AAR of Japanese naval air strikes on Rabaul destroyer force follows.

Targeting of Allied air strikes on Buna switched from airfield to ground attack air strikes on Japanese LCU. Plans also to switch Allied air strikes from night to daylight as much as possible. Some Allied CAP fighters also operating over Buna base hex to engage any Japanese air intervention Pillager decides to send over Buna (this also a favorable opportunity to create additional attrition on Jap air forces). It appears likely both Allied and Japanese CAP fighters are operating simultaneously over Buna. AAR’s of air activity over Buna follow.
