You probably forgot to withdraw some air groups or ships - they are constant drain on your PPs.

The game will pants you if you fail to withdraw units by their scheduled date. LCUs will w/d automatically, but airgroups & ships must be withdrawn manually. You can remove pilots from from airgroups scheduled to withdraw, & remove airgroups from ships scheduled to withdraw, w/ no penalty.

The worst thing is having a ship, scheduled to withdraw, but unable to do so b/c of damage. Ships must meet a min damage threshold before they can be withdrawn. If a damaged ship is causing probs, you need to scuttle it, or put it in a FullSpeed TF charging into enemy defenses, & hope that it'll be sunk quickly. Kinda gamey, but you need to remove the drain on your PPs as quickly as possible.

Also, Ship withdrawals can only happen at a national port or level 9 ports. Places like San Fran, Sydney, Columbo and off map bases. Pearl does not work....GP

game patch updates expanded the list of ports to withdraw from.

see http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3524496

There's a listing of req'd Ship Withdrawals available from the Intelligence screen, hotkey [I]. Best to check it monthly, & get them headed towards an allowed port in plenty of time. Note that the game only wants the ship to be withdrawn. If it has an embarked airgroup of float-planes or carrier aircraft, you can safely off-load the airgroup to a base or another ship, & suffer no penalty for doing so.

The basic req'ments (& allowed ports) for withdrawal remain in effect, see the manual 5.1.3.8.1, 6.9, 11.1.2, & 18.1.9.

Ship withdrawals are also affected by add'l criteria, in addition to being in an allowable base.
- Off-map bases are allowed bases.
- Damage of >50 in any 1 category or >99 total will prevent withdrawal until repairs bring damage below those thresholds.
- Enemy air-superiority over an allowed base will prevent withdrawal.

True, But, If the CV being withdrawn is returning later, It is best to leave the airgroup on board. If you remove them, the ship will reappear with no airgroups. Noticed this 4 or 5 years ago in my 2nd or 3rd GC....GP

It's also a very gamey exploit to retain more assets in theater than you are supposed to be able to.

Y of course. But the pilots will be in the same state as when they left, & I preferred to retain the airgroups on-map for training. Fly in the ointment proved to be that I withdrew the CV from Bombay, then found she was scheduled to return at Sydney! Lost over a month's training time finding a few escorts, loading the airgroups onto xAKs, then shipping them down the west edge of the map south of Perth & over to Melbourne, fingers crossed the whole way. What a pain!

Faugh to your 'gamey' characterization. Let Eisenhower find his own airgroups & pilots. What about all the reinforcement CAs & BBs that arrive w/ no floatplanes? Ike glommed them for himself! Danged if I send him one iota of materiel or personnel above the absolute minimum req'd to avoid PP penalties.

Good luck presenting that argument to your opponent.

I thought if you withdrew those air groups with the carriers then the air groups came back in short order at the withdrawal base?? Other players had advised that you are supposed to take them off...

If you have CAs and BBs showing up with no aircraft. Especially USN, there is a problem with your database.

I have never pulled a squadron off of a withdrawing ship, be it cruiser or CV, and I have never seen the air group return as a reinforcement independent of it's parent ship.

That advice is coming form players who seek to maximize exploitation of the game engine, thus that's why they see it as something one is "supposed" to do.

Bill,

In some of the modded scenarios a few cruisers do enter without air squadrons. The French CA Algerie in BTS is one that readily comes to mind.
Typically one has enough spare squadrons around as a result of buying back the squadrons from lost cruisers to meet this need and one doesn't need to exploit the game engine by removing squadrons from withdrawing ships.

I don't buy it. I'll do a test one day, but there's a fair amount of set up so I'll just do it in the middle of a game instead.
