Also i was thinking about how they could intergrate modern stuff into this.
I think the best way would be to have 'collections' of equipment in a bundle that need such and such lift from a rocket and research that, like rosetta has all its sub-units as do most space vehicles nowadays.
and they go on 'multiple' extended missions at once.

Though I would prefer being able to customise what to put where and send it on its way based on what you tacked onto a probe.
