so I felt like testing this for a while, I wanted to see what would happen if
during the incident where a PLAN ship nearly rammed the Ticonderoga class
cruiser USS Cowpens observing the liaoning battle group had turned hot.

as there is little info on the incident I used 2 compitant destroyers and 2 frigates.
I placed two of the destroyers and one of the frigates in formation with the carrier
and one destroyer on a collision course nearby the Cowpens.

EDIT: destoyers I used were current model Ludas and frigs I used were jianghus

I mistook the Luda s a frigate and it was the ship I had in the beginning confrontation. my bad.

Again since information is sparce I had to make a few guesses as to the composition
of the air wing.

30 single seat j-15, 12 in maintinance, 7 reserve, 10 standered cap.
2 super frelon AEW
4 super frelon ASW, 2 in maintenance, 2 with sonoboueys.
4 super frelon transports, 1 maintaniance, 3 CSAR.

The scenario begins presuming that a nervous Chinese captain fires warning shots at the
Cowpens with 2 accidently striking her. The Cowpens responds by opening up with her main guns and turning away
from the battle group at flank speed as she faces a 5:1 disadvantage. the cowpens is able to sink the aggressor
while the battle group turns away not wanting to risk a valuable asset at this close range.
While turning away the carrier begins to arm some of her reserve fighters with rockets while her escorts open fire
on the retreating cowpens who has deployed a seahawk to watch her back. The cowpens faced 3 waves of asms. she
successfully defend herself from the first 2 waves but expendand most of her missiles. she does recive a few hits
from the 3rd wave, taking 35% damage and begins to catch fire and take on water. The cowpens recalls her seahawk in order to prevent its loss to enemy action. as the Cowpens retreats behind a small island group 2 j-15s
armed with rockets get airborne and begin attacking the cowpens. out of misiles the cowpens defends herself
with her CIWS downing on of the planes after the rocket attack. At this point I determined by now some very important
people are making some very important phone calls and are calling off the dogs so I ended the scenario.

After action report.

the cowpens suffered 38% damage by the end of the scenario.

she had expended her missiles in a panic allowing a swarm of Chinese missiles to inflict the damage
most of which damaged or destroyed a large number of her sensors.

determined combat inifective and in need of MAJOR repairs.

china however did suffer greater losses including 1 frigate and 1 J-15, losses the Chinese military and government wont get over easily.

as I stated before I found very little info on the encounter and I will gladly test this again if someone can provide me with more info.
ex. classes of escorts, exact Chinese air wing composition and standerd operational proceadurece/ order of battle and doctrine, as well as the
exact location f the encounter.

comments and recommendations are welcome!

what was the crew experience for the Cowpens? Based on real world examples I wouldn't set it very high

The scenario sounds interesting but in the actual event all the PLA(N) ships that were with the CV were amphibs, LST and the like. You have the number of escorts right, but reality was a bit more boring. More likely the incident would have ended with the Cheng making scrambled eggs for the Liaoning's CO as well.
