I know I'm anal but I'm trying to find a standard layout for my Soviet Fronts and Armies.

What I have in mind are three possibilities:

1. 4 Armies per front with 3 rifle corps and 1 tank corps. Each army has room for 2 brigade size units.
The Front will then have 18 command points for Front reserves. Also one army will be held in reserve.

2. 4 Armies per front with 4 rifle corps (1 being held as reserve). Each army has room for 2 brigade size
units. The Front will have to Tank/Mech Corps and room for 10 command points for Front reserves.
As with the above, one army will be held in reserve.

3. 4 Armies per front with 4 rifle corps (1 being held as reserve). Each army has room for 2 brigade size
units. The Front will have 18 command points for Front reserves as all tank/mech Corps will be held
under STAVKA control. One army will be held in reserve.

I'm leaning toward the #3 layout. Just now need to determine what type of units to have as the "filler" units for the Army and Front.

Hi

I know it was sometimes Soviet practice but in this game don't attach combat units to the Front - all you are doing is losing one chance at passing the leader checks by not having an army level leader.

Post April 42 you should be able to operate with 5 armies per front (& perhaps a few tied to the Military Districts). As you flip divisions to corps (do this sparingly in 1942 as you need the units and they cost too many APs), any front level malus will drop.

Usual advice is to link the tank/shock armies to Stavka as you'll need to shift these around. For what is worth, I think you can link 3 of your tank armies to one of the fronts you think will fight in the south - still flexible but gets you more out of the command chain.

Would it still be reasonable to do this with artillery divisions? Or do you eventually have so many of them that it's more natural to think of them as attached to armies rather than fronts?

I'd say that artillery divisions can be attached to STAVKA armies, myself, due to the fact that their CV contribution is negligible (less so now than before.) You really don't get a whole lot of benefit from avoiding coordination penalties with them. Save Front capacity for maneuver units.

there is a 10% cv penalty for units directly attached to front hq and don't forget those units could be used else where for what ever purpose and keep front staff work down as a reserve of sorts to fit some other formation ...just a thought since I tend not to be so orginised yet but spend mass ap getting vehicles and good leaders or reserve ghost armys to fit in any big salient that might arise after they are fitted out in reserve

There are different setups for different periods. In 1945 I want to concentrate all my best units (Guards) under Guards and Shock HQs. In 1942 I tried a balanced approach. Also it's different when you have only divs and brigades with the corps coming slowly and slowly growing in strength (cavalry, tank, mechanized, rifle).
