(Apologies if this has been answered already, but I've searched the forums and manual and drawn a blank)

So I'm playing "Strike First", where the British are supplied with both Gazelles and Lynx AH.7s. My challenge is that the Readiness for the Lynx's starts moderately high when they first arrives, then plummets, even without movement. I've kept them near the western edge (assuming that flying them around might reduce their Readiness state), yet still it drops. I've tried On Call & Screen both, and neither seems to make a dent. All my helicopters are now around 25-30% and haven't been able to intervene at all. The Russian Hinds in this scenario are flying around at near 98-100% Readiness.

Are the Lynx's just considered highly unreliable? Is there anything I can do to boost their Readiness before committing them to battle?

P.S. Oh, and is there any way to get them to land and lie low? I'm getting multiple Gazelles shot out of the air from long range by 2S6 Tunguskas, even though I have them on On Call (NOE flight) behind forests. The Soviet air defenses are fearsome in this scenario, and I'm just trying to hold everything back until I can whittle down the defenses first.

Thanks!

Chris

To "land them" use rest and resupply.that will put them on the ground, load them up and recover lost readiness. They are losing readiness getting painted and engaged.

Gotcha. The Lynx's weren't being engaged directly (as I was keeping them at the very western edge), so I couldn't figure out what was going on. Knowing they're getting painted by the SA-11s or 2S6s and that drops readiness is interesting and good to know. Appreciate the quick response.

To a pilot, getting painted is like seeing tracers flying by. They are going to get energetic.

If you want to "stash" your rotary wings for a bit, look for masking terrain. Get some high ground between you and the enemy. Look for a depression. Look for a lake or river valley. Right at the west edge of the map, the elevation is 2, like much of the rest of the map. Get them at elev 1.

Remember, that in order to resupply, you have to be within 3 hexes of the parent HQ, so be prepared to resubordinate.

Edited to Add: Strike that last sentence. In 2.05 and earlier, you need to be within 1500 meters of the Force HQs to resupply.

So seeing the RWR light off is the modern equivalent of a WWII pilot seeing tracers fly past the canopy. :)

I'm learning to pay more attention to the map elevations. What keeps throwing me off is that I'm assuming forest adds elevation that can be hidden behind. So I keep moving up my my choppers behind blocks of forest, assuming that they're hiding below the treeline. I have to remember that in the current engine, that's not modeled and thus forests are effectively "flat" surfaces. Thanks for the reply.

The forest is modeled in the sense that it is clutter that degrades LOS. Helos behind trees still need to pop up to look around or maneuver over obstacles. Trees are not very good at blocking radar. Getting into lower elevations is the best way to not be seen. Another thing to consider, even being low would not help if an aircraft with look down/shoot down radar is around. RWRs will say hey bad radar detected, some will give bearing, and only a few may tell type. Not that we currently get that super detailed currently.

Ah, I was just trying to find a place to keep my helicopters from getting shot down until I could whittle down the air defenses. So I was parking them behind tree copses and putting them on On Call orders (NOE), but they were still getting shot by the Tunguskas. So I couldn't figure out where to stash them out of the way without moving them closer to the air defenses to get to lower elevations. Your explanation helps me understand better how this is all modeled. Thanks!

Put them on the lowest elevation you can find with a screen or hold order.

Good Hunting.

Reset and refit will show them as Landed in 2.06. That will be lower than the screen or hold, but has them on the ground and more vulnerable to arty. Its a trade off.
