Hi Forum

Is there a way to create a new weapon record?
I´ve been trying to add the nuclear Nike Hercules missile to the existing launchers/facilities, but I can´t find a weapon´s record of that particular missile. It do exist in the DB, so I think it should be possible, or am I missing something?

Regards

Søren

Schr75,

I found the following Wikipedia entry on Nikes. Search for "LIM-49 Nike Zeus".

"Nike Hercules.

By the mid-1950s aircraft performance had improved so much that the Nike had limited capability to successfully attack the aircraft before they would be within weapons launching range. The interception could be made even more difficult, or impossible, through the use of stand-off weapons that allowed the aircraft to drop its bomb load while still outside the missile's 30 miles (48 km) range. There were also concerns that the system's relatively low resolution radars would make it difficult to pick out targets flying in formation, leading to an outright miss.

An obvious solution to the accuracy problem was to use a nuclear warhead, and Bell proposed two updated versions of the missile to carry one. The "Ajax" version used the existing missile with a gun-type warhead, while the "Hercules" was enlarged to carry a more efficient but rounder implosion-type device. The Army chose the Hercules option, which was initially known as Nike B.[N 1] Soon after starting work, the decision was made to eliminate liquid fuels, and the missile underwent a major redesign into a much larger solid fuel form. The new missile used four of the Ajax's solid rocket boosters to get it into the air quickly, and flew at higher speeds to interceptions as far away as 75 miles (120 km) and altitudes over 100,000 feet (30 km). In 1956 both missiles were renamed using Bell's code names, Nike I becoming the MIM-3 Nike Ajax and Nike B the MIM-14 Nike Hercules."

Maybe this is the warhead you are looking for?

I've spent some time "playing" with both the Hercules and the Ajax. I didn't see a nuclear warhead entry in the CWDB either, but the wiki article makes it sound like the nuclear warhead concept never went into production for either the Ajax or the Hercules due to tracking problems, expense and EMP issues related to high altitude nuclear blasts. It may be that some test Ajax missiles were created though. See what you think after reading the article.

Hopefully this will help you out.

Dean

Thanks for your reply.

The nuclear tipped Nike Hercules is in the CWDB (#1645 MIM-14B Nike Hercules W-31 Mod 0 20kt).
The Nike Hercules did deploy with the nuclear warhead, in both the US and Europe, the last being withdrawn in the early 80´s IIRC.

If they were more effective than the conventionally armed, I don´t know, but I´d like to play with it a bit.

My problem is you need a weapon record of the nuclear Hercules in order to add it to an existing mount, and I can´t find one.

So I was hoping there was a way to create one.

Hello Soren,

Based on what you stated, I tried experimenting with the Nike Hercules(I found the missile with the nuclear warhead in the database just as you said...#1645). At first I just tried
loading 3 nuclear warhead missiles on to some pre-existing launchers (I had one site with 3, 3 missile launchers). I got them into the magazines, but couldn't move them to the active rails.
At first when the missiles launched, only the conventional tipped missiles on that site would go. As I said, I couldn't get the nukes to load. I then removed all three weapons mounts, re-added them and loaded them with only nuke Nikes. That seemed to do it. I was able to get a nuke warhead Nike to launch at a test Russian bomber at high altitude.
Then some funny stuff happened. My nuke Nike MISSED! How does one miss with a nuclear airburst????? The game showed a very pretty little nuclear detonation, just like a land strike nuke appears. The little computer mushroom cloud grew and grew, eventually covering my Russian target bomber....until..that tough old red bird flew right out the other side of the cloud apparently unscathed from heat, blast or radiation. I think something is not right here! Maybe you can recreate my experiment?

I would expect that even a far miss of a multi-kiloton air burst warhead to pretty much fry anything in the air near by...but it didn't. That is one tough Russian Bison!
Anyway, maybe this will add more data to our experiment with Nike Hercules and nuke warheads. Let me know what you think?

Guys if you catch something odd please do grab a save and post it. We will look and adjust if something is wrong.

If you need a unit just add it to the db request strings. Things are updated enough where its not really that long of a weight depending on the db authors worklist.

Thanks!

Mike

Hello Dean

How did you add the nuclear hercules to the launcher?
I have only found weapon records for the conventional hercules, and I haven´t found a way to create my own weapon records.

I will Mike. I just have to figure out if I´m missing something, or there really is a legitimate request for a new unit.

I would love to try those nukes against those naughty Soviet Bears and Bisons

Mike,

Thanks for moving this thread to the right place. I was going to do some more experimentation with the Nuke Nikes to make sure that missing with an
air burst NUKE wasn't some kind of strange "operator error" on my part. If I am able to get more data, where would be the appropriate place to post it?
In the CWDB fix it form?

Appreciate the great customer support.

Soren,

Try the following. All these instruction take place within the scenario editor.

1. Add the unit (in this case CWDB # 402 SAM Bty (Nike Hercules) to an existing scenario or a new blank sandbox.

2. It will load with 27x MIM-14B Nike Hercules missiles (CWDB #331). These are
conventional HE warheads. This consists of 3, 3 missile launchers for a total of
9 missiles sitting on the rails ready to go.

3. Select the SAM Bty and click on "Weapons" on the right side of your screen.
You'll see the 9 ready conventionally armed missiles loaded and ready to go.

4. Under one of the launchers, select the line that says
"3/3 MIM-14B Nike Hercules (6 on mount mag)". Make sure that line is highlighted.

5. Now hit "Remove Weapon Record(s). I have found on my computer that I have to
hold this event for a few seconds for it to take. I have also had to run through steps
3 and 4 a couple of times to get rid of the conventional missiles. You should now have
3, empty launchers waiting for your Nukes.

6. On the Unit Status screen for SAM Bty (Nike Hercules) hit the "Weapons" button again.
You'll be back at the "Weapons for SAM Bty (Nike Hercules) screen. Select one of the
now empty "Nike Hercules 3 Missile Lnchr Complex" lines and highlight it.

7. In the bottom left corner, hit "Add Weapon Record". The "Add Weapon Record" window will
open. Scroll down until you find the weapon that you want to add. In this case it is
4367 MIM-14B Nike Hercules (0/4). Note #4367 is the nuke warhead Nike with the CWDB entry of 1645 but you can't tell until you select it a view it.
This will add the Nuke Nike, CWDB # 1645 with the W-31 Mod 0 20 kt airburst warhead. Once you've selected the weapons you want,
hit the "Add Selected" box in the "Add Weapons Record" window. This will put 0/4 Nuke Nikes on the first 3-Missile Lnchr.

8. Now you have to get them on to the launch rails. Back on the "Weapons for SAM Bty (Nike Hercules) screen, highlight the first 3-Missile Lnchr Complex.
Select the grayed out entry "0/4 MIM-14B Nike Hercules. Now, on the bottom of this screen, click in the "Change" box, then in the "Weapons: ## " box enter
the number to 3, then click "Set" when it appears. Now do the same for the 2nd and 3rd sets of launcher rails.

9. It appears to me that if you try to mix the conventional and the nuclear warheads on the same 9 launcher site, the computer will launch the conventional weapons
first, but I am not sure about this. You'll have to leave the "Unit Weapons" screen and select another unit, then return to the SAM Bty before the "Unit Weapons"
section under the "Unit Status" screen for your battery will update and show only 9 nuclear tipped Nikes.

Experiment and let me know what you find out.

Thank you SO much!

That did the trick. I didn't realize that the nuclear and conventional Nike was called the same in the add weapon dialog. That threw me off.

Those Bears are in for a rude surprise
