I realized last night that my torp capable planes - even on the west coast of the USA - showed torpedos as 'red' and unavailable as ordnance. i double checked my HQ's and set torp ordnance to 20 (the max) but still nothing several turns later

according to the manual torps are purchased automatically - and yet none of my catalinas or land based avengers show any as available. only my CV torp bombers show torps as 'green'

any ideas why?

FYI torp max ordnance isn't 20, that's just the most you can 'purchase' at one time. So to build it up just buy 20, then 20 more, etc. Not sure how the SW handles the indicator if there are not enough torps to go 'around'. Pretty sure it'll still fly a reduced number of planes to use available torps. At least it does on carriers. Try expanding your torp capacity to fill all A/C at the base and see what the indicator does.

Exactly. You should increase your Air HQ torpedoes available to >100+ to ensure that all torpedo-capable planes within its range can partake of torpedo Naval Attack missions.

When checking through your HQs to purchase torps, you can manually purchase them as rustysi posted, in groups of max 20 at a time. But you're not done yet!

Click each HQ's 'Show unit TOE' button, the 'Torpedo Ordnance' text changes to yellow.
Click that yellow text to bring up a dialog, enter the # of torps you want the HQ to keep in stock. You're changing the HQ's OOB.
When torps from your purchased total get expended, the HQ will auto-purchase new torps, if the base has enough supply. This beats the heck out of checking & manually purchasing torps every day, 'cos you just know that you'll have forgotten to do so just as it becomes very important!

IIRC there's also a thing, that if you use air or sea to transport the HQ, it'll lose its on-hand torps, but presumably not its edited re-purchase ability. So it'll re-up its torps after it's unloaded into its destination. Dunno if this depends on being in combat status or not.

Also IIRC, HQ fragments have no torp-supply capability, so it's no good to try to split up an HQ to increase the 'coverage' of torp availability to a wider area.

Figures the one unit whose TO&E I don't check. Thanks though always good to learn something. Also keep in mind that a Command HQ will supply torps to any unit within its command radius as long as it can spend supply to do so.

Also note that if the mission isn't suitable for the use of torpedoes (e.g. ASW) then torpedoes will show up as red because the squadron won't carry them- they'll automatically load bombs though so no need to change the selection.

Unfortunately I have yet to see the "retain a certain number of torps" setting actually work.

I often check the HQ a couple of turns after a torp mission to see if it is automatically replenishing back to the number I set and it has not done so in any one case yet.

You do have to turn replacements on for the auto torpedo to work.

i have tried editing the torp values as above for both the toe HQ's, and i find only the catalinas within a few hexes of the HQ will actually load them. Is this by design? For instance - i have an HQ in Sydney with torps and the catalinas there can carry them - but in Townsville, my catalinas, with the same subordinate HQ (both usaaf 11th) the cats there show RED on their torps when flying naval attack missions or search missions, both of which show green in sydney. i had hoped the torps would move via rail or some other abstracted movement, but it doesnt seem to be the case.

Read my post in this thread

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3699916&mpage=1&key=torpedo%2Cpurchase&#3699957

and s.7.2.1.10.2.2 of the manual.

When you stop making assumptions and start reading the manual you will more quickly learn the mechanics of this game.
