I've never actually been to the end of a Grand Campaign but I'm curious as to what the greatest ace (Ally or Japanese) has been in completed or nearly completed games.

I almost always play the Japanese. The best I've done is get a 22 victory ace (on the Kaga) in a PBEM (through mid-43) and a 34 victory ace (mostly in an A6M3) in an AI game.

Just curious as to what level aces others have seen.

I too play Japan and as soon as my aces get to 10 kills I place them in the Training reserve I do not want them getting killed off before they get much better planes. Plus they can help train up new pilots. So a win-win in my book

In my games as Japan, two of which went into 45, my highest had about 25 kills. Most seem to reach 11/12 then die.

In my first Pbem as the allies (vs. Rader), I had a british ace, T.Cooper-Sliper, who fought from 1941 till 1945, when he participated in the invasion of Japan. Game ended with Cooper-Sliper having accumulated more than 57 kills flying with Hurricanes, Spitfires VII and T-Bolt.

during the 4 years of his war, he got WIA three times and always came back fighting harder than before

I've played 1 game entirely through to the bitter end in late 46 vs AI & started a new one that's in May43 now & have had a few 20+ kill pilots, mostly those pilots from the AVG & early SE Asia Brit pilots when the IJ are very active. Once they reach that magical 81 exp they go into training command regardless of kills in my games. I find it harder vs AI to get to the large kills from mid to late war as the AI just isn't that active in the air war by then

Against a decent human opponent it is harder to rack up kills. I played a full campaign with Ark and my top Allied pilot had about 25 kills with a lot just under him. His top surviving ace was in the low teens, but he pulled good pilots out of battle a lot. The most frustrating thing is that it seemed like a pilot would climb to the top and then go get himself killed. One pilot was promoted to brigadier general and died the next day. Pappy Boyington had 8 kills in the first week or so of the war and then died. Did not last a week in my second campaign either. Drinking too much, I suppose.

Wouldnt your comparative advantage be more important than them flying better air frames? If so early game would be the time to rack up kills.

In every game I have played until this current BTS game Pappy Boyington has always been my leading Ace.

He is lagging behind the leaders in my current game with only 14 kills.

My current top ace is a Dutchman with 23 kills who is now flying a P40E.

All other leaders have been transferred out to their respective training commands while the Dutchman keeps flying out of Koepang.

Wake held this game and I reinforced it. VMF 211 has multiple double digit aces with the commander Putnam leading with 18 kills.

Hans, interesting experience you have had with "Pappy". I have never had him do very well. I may have placed him at some risk, transferring him into fresh, 60+ experienced squadrons with only another mate or two for company. I applaud the design as it seems someone new every game takes the top spot. It is always a Chinaman that leads the way in the first 12 months with perhaps a Brit a close second or third. The AVG is culled by Zulu HQ rapidly in late spring '42.

Got to 2 NOV 45 before we stopped (Japan just didn't have anything left in the tank(er)).

This is all the pilots with more than 15 kills and still available. About that same amount had KIA/MIA/WIA attached.
