Do the allies need to keep reserves in the Great Britain? Is it possible for the Germans to mount some kind of attack onto the island?

At the start of the game there are quite a few formations sitting on the island that could be used in Italy. I hesitate to ship them out though since I have no idea if it is possible for the Germans to do some kind of raid onto the island.

Anyone got more insight into the German capabilities?

The Germans have no amphibious TFs. They have paratroopers, but they will never reach England before getting shot down.

as well as no TF to mention either, no real fleet to protect it in it's crossing, no command of the air for it, so not only sea action out of the question, but any large scale air one either, a odd paratrooper may have got in, but no real chance of any real numbers or to supply them if they did, so would just be thrown away, while German might have been masters in land combat at the time or almost top of the class, with sea and air by then it was a different story

Is there any kind of logistics reason not to move them to the Med? For example, will it eat up shipping to keep these forces supplied in Italy, or even North Africa? In a similar vein, if I dump too many forces into Sicily, will I be overtaxing recently captured ports in order to try to supply them? Note that I've already realized that to a large degree, it's pointless enyway since I'm soon going to have a very narrow front near Messina, and then in the straights, but I wonder all the same.

You'll find you're going to want those units for the amphibious invasion of Northern Europe. If you transfer your amphib HQs to the UK from the Mediterranean, you'll just have barely enough units to fully support each Amphib HQ. You'll want to get those HQs gaining those prep points at the soonest opportunity.

In my current campaign, though, I did send some forces from the UK down to the Med to take Sardinia and Carsica so my other Mediterranean forces didn't have to be used to take those islands. Then when the islands were secured, I sent the units originally in the UK back.

You could always try a Southern France/Italy campaign and see if kicking down the back door would have worked?

Would be interesting. BTW, has anybody tried Churchill's Yugoslavian idea? I'm still too much on the learning curve to give it a go, but I was wondering.

Yugoslavia is a no-go area.

I wonder if someone will try an all-Med strategy once PBEMs are in full swing. I am still learning this game, but a first glance at Provence looks like an "Overlord" in Southern France (i.e. the main landing in 1944), would be pretty tough.

The only ports in the south of France are Marseilles, Toulon, and Nice. All are flanked by rough terrain, with limited beaches to land at. Even if you get ashore, the terrain would make it easier for the Germans to establish a defensive perimeter than in Northern France.

The beaches in Languedoc are pretty open, but there is not a single port, and nearest is Marseilles....way too far.

"Dragoon" worked only because the Germans had stripped 19th Army, and the front in France was collapsing anyway

That's my take on it, am I on track?

The game looks a lot prettier now than it did a couple years ago 8)

One problem with the all-Med strategy is the VP loss that occurs for the Allies. Unless you can get the southern front moving fast enough to capture the hexes in northern France before the VP penalty, it really discourages the southern approach. The other problem with coming from the south is a lack of supply network and ports in southern France. This makes it difficult to keep a drive supplied and moving into northern France from the south. But try it a few times and let us know if you can make it work!

Yes, it does! Looks great!

(Baelfin is referring to fact I used to be a tester, but dropped-out early for RL unfortunately, so I saw the early versions)

Interesting. I wonder why - there are invadible areas and Churchill certainly considered it. For that matter, for those who remember old AH's Third Reich those two beach hexes were always very tempting.

Otherwise, I get that you want the units up in the UK by Jan or Feb 44 but why not bring them down to the med beforehand and speed up the capture of Rome, then shift them back up in late Jan?
