Depends which map set you use and the colour contrasts you get from them, for instance in the AgentS map preferences I am using, hex ownership (front-lines) are shown by shading. You can change the colours of the game border lines in Map Preferences, you can cycle the borders through national boundaries, or hex ownership with F6 (changes border draw mode), F7 Changes hex ownership draw mode). Mouse over the icons below the jump map, which do the same things. I see the problem with some of the darker coloured map options, but personally I prefer the lighter shades of mapping (like the Agent series), the borders show up well and the hex ownership shading mostly works OK (Poland pale yellow is a little too pale) I am using 'Agent B+W' for winter turns, suitably cold and grey, and 'Agent Retro' for the summer turns, which adds some seasonal immersion. ToF has about the most comprehensive set of map choices, preferences and display options of any game, sometimes the colour contrasts are not perfect, but with so many combinations available I am not sure what more can be done.
