Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

All actions were concentrated on softening Batavia garrison.
300 bombers 200 fighters of 5th USAAF plus 2 BB and 8 cruisers are involved into this activity.

B-24 continued bombing Japanese airfields during last week. Over 50 enemy fighters has been destroyed for 5 B-24 total, most of fighters were destroyed in air by bombers. Got two new Aces flaying B-24 :)

You lost a lot of guns. I'm betting the destroyed units was one of the FA Bn's.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

8 US Destroyers bombarded Billiton at night without spectacular result.

Very risky day for 5th USAAF. As Batavia fallen most of bombers lost they target assign, of course I forgot to change orders last turn and as result most of bombers were selecting targets on they own today. I got lucky, results are not bad at all.

22nd BG flayed 53 sorties against Japanese APDs at Billition and sunk all four ships.

Most of bombers bombed 52nd IJA Div at Merak with quit good results.
However not all, here is list of attacks:
- 16 sorties by B-24 against Billiton airfield, no loses vs 2 Jakes destroyed
- 6 sorties by B-24 against Praboemoelih airfield, 1 B-24 lost and 3 damaged vs 3 Jack and 1 Oscar
- 6 sorties by B-24 against Singkawang airfield, 1 B-24 damaged vs 1 Helen destroyed
- 7 sorties by B-24 against Djambi airfield, 2 B-24 lost and 2 damaged vs 4 Oscars destroyed

TOE of 4 US tank Bn. was upgraded today, that was reason for high tanks losses during battle of Java. All 4 battalions were still using M3 Stuart. :(

Additional 4 New Zealand, 3 Australian fighters squadrons and 8 Marines squadrons(114,133,143,144,216,217,231,251) plus VMF-551 are unloading on Java.

South Pacific HQ:

My daily run against Rabaul was intercepted by 19 A6M2-N. Due to high fatigue and lower altitude of escorting fighters I took some losses. Total toll is 2 B-24, 2 P-40E lost for one float fighter.

Pacific HQ:

3rd Marine Division is sailing towards Wake Island now. Landing force cover include one battleship, six light cruisers and 14 destroyers. Two bombardment groups are following with 8 heavy cruisers and 12 destroyers. Air cover will be provided by Sherman's carriers ( 3 CV, 2 CVL, 2 BB, 4 CA, 12 DD).

20th - 24th Oct 1943

Generally it was rest time for both sides. Only activity was my fail sweep of Balickapan where I lost 13 P-47 for 21 enemy fighters.

All combat units from South Pacific HQ are withdraw to PH for TOE upgrades. Only combat unit left there is American Division and 2 Artillery regiments.

3rd Marine is 2 days from Wake Island but it need wait 3 days more for delayed Sherman's flattops before it can continue operation.

Preparation for Operation "Seaworthy" ( Marianas islands invasion ) are rolling with full speed.
Navy is almost ready, just most of BB are still underway of in dray-dock.
Most of my LCUs are 50-60% prepared for they targets.
Transports are ready.
However USMC air component still need more planes and some upgrades.

Sara fighter group was upgraded to F4U-1a, next in line is Lexi and Big E.
One group of F4U-2 boarded one of my CVL and it will be resized to size 18.

Question:

Does anybody know how to use PTs ???. They always evade, never fires torpedo and as result they usually are sunk without fire single torpedo.

PT boats work for me to reduce ammunition and ops points of fleets so hopefully they do not get to bombard and/or are stuck out in the open when daybreak comes. They are also great CAP traps. I dont expect them to hit anything with the torpedoes they have.

25th Oct 1943

My patrol planes noticed some Japanese warships around Palembang, obvious conclusion was Martin want attack Batavia. It seems it was good conlusion. Two groups cruisers show up near Batavia at night 24/25th. I had only Burke's Flechers in area and 20 PTs. All PTs as usually run away. However Burke engaged both groups and scored torpedo hit on heavy cruiser Haguro (it is reported as sunk, but I doubt in this report).

perfect situation for torpedo attack and run away :(

PT boats work for me to reduce ammunition and ops points of fleets so hopefully they do not get to bombard and/or are stuck out in the open when daybreak comes. They are also great CAP traps. I dont expect them to hit anything with the torpedoes they have.

Well, I do.

Very funny.

Do you have any night naval air search up in the area? Really, I am grasping at straws here as I have not had this problem.

Yes I have, ~20 at night and ~30-40 at day. But problem seems to be in commander decision to evade fight or even they actually engage they use only MGs.

The PT TF commander's leadership and inspiration stats are ... well ...uninspiring. Unless every PT skipper is high in aggression, they will not follow him into battle. I put less emphasis on naval skill in order to get PT skippers with high aggression and a commander with good leadership stats.
In the first example you show, PTs taking on cruisers and DDs is suicide, so the commander with high naval skill (rightfully) turned away.

Most players use the PTs to either guard their port or raid an amphib force that is landing. Open sea intercepts are difficult, especially against fast ships. This is like a sub being unable to get to a good firing position.

I have no information about any influence of leadership skill in surface engagement. What I know it count naval skill and aggression. In report you mention my PTs got to 3000y range and turn away undetected by Japanese ships. I believe it was perfect situation to fire torpedo salvo.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

Firstly, Merak was bombarded by two British cruisers TFs. Next my daily bombing run at Bandoeng was intercepted by 12 N1K1-J, 12 Ki-43-IV and 7 Ki-84a. My escorting P-39 did miracle achiving 1:1 kill ratio, however a few enamy fighters got to my bombers. It cost me 7 P-39, 3 139WH-3, 3 CW-22 and 4 B-25 for 7 Japanese fighters.

South Pacific HQ:

Salomon's Air forces launched strike against Turk harbor. P-38 managed to shoot down 21 enemy fighters for 5 ours.
B-24 scored several hits on ships and sunk 2 AV and 4 ACM for cost 4 bombers.

DD Wakazuki was sunk by SS Muskallunge near Jesselton.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

Martins sent a few Nell to attack Soerabaja AF at night. He has lost 10 bombers for zero hits to flak.

Pacific HQ
:

This time my battleships decided to bombard defenders position with very nice results. Wake fall in 2nd day to 3rd Marine. Now we are loading 3rd back on ships and garrison forces are unloading.

2nd Nov 1943

I-122 fired 4 torpedoes at CV Tiger's Claw. Destroyers Kidd, Fullam and Daly reported 12 hit on sub and sound of sinking.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

Maritn has send a few planes to bomb Batavia & Soerabaja airfields a night, 4 Nicks, 9 Frances and 2 Nells did not return home without scoring single hit.

Next we fought huge battle over sky of Praboemoelih today.
At first two groups (36 planes + 28 planes ) of F6F-3 with high cover from P-47( 75 planes) swept airfield. My loses were quite heavy, 14 Hellcats and 9 Thunderbolts however my fighters menaged to destroy whole enemy CAP by shooting down 35 Ki-44-IIc and 22 Ki-84a.
Next over 250 B-24 bombed airfield under cover 60-100 Thunderbolts resulting with destroying 23 Nicks on ground and closing AF.
It seems to me that He has lost a lot of supplies either.
