(again, probably).

PDU off, Grand Campaign, I'm playing the allies, most recent beta patch, November '42. I have VMSB-233 in Pearl Harbor, flying SBD-2s. I'd like to upgrade it to TBF-1s. Is that possible, or do I have to go backwards to SBD-1s?

Yes, the path for this squadron is:

SDB-2 Present status
SBD-1
SBD-3
SBD-5
TBF-1

with PDU off you can't alter the specified path

Since there are no SBD-1s in the pool, and no SBD-1s are being created, how is one to upgrade this squadron?

One has the great fortune of having to await the upgrade to another type of a squadron currently equipped with SBD-1s.

After those unused SBD-1s return to the pool this squadron's path will open up.

Thx Hans!

This seems to potentially create a conundrum when too many of a particular airframe are lost, it could become impossible to upgrade squadrons? Is this something that's a problem for folks playing with PDU Off? I don't like the potential "gameyness" of having PDU On, but certainly don't like being stuck with an old airframe because of a hard-coded requirement to upgrade to an older one that doesn't exist anymore!

Hopefully Obvert or Jockemeister will see this thread and provide a response.

They are the only two regulars here I am aware have tried PDU off.

Yes, it could become impossible to upgrade a squadron. This particular squadron has a removal date (15 March 1944). Because of that, in order to upgrade to the SBD-1, there must be 18 SBD-1s in the pool to make the upgrade. If there are not the full set of planes, that upgrade path is stuck, and you are out of luck.

If you have the SBD-1s in other squadrons, you will need to either get those squadrons upgraded or withdraw/disband the other squadrons to get the planes to the pool. You may want to consider pulling the squadrons out of front-line combat to ensure that you don't lose too many in combat, thus falling below the 18 availability.

"Upgrades" to older models doesn't happen often, but it can happen with other squadrons as well. Monitor your pool levels to avoid running down pool levels below the minimums, and don't simply "run out" your supply of old airframes. I have a similar game going right now, and I'm in this situation with my bomber squadrons.

On the upside, as the Allies, if you can't use this squadron, by mid-1943 you will have enough assets that you will likely not even miss this one!

I play with PDU on. I like being able to select my airframes. However, with PDU off I believe you can withdraw a squadron with say a F4F3 and when it reappears(assuming the next upgrade is available) it will reappear in the next airframe available in the upgrade path. Its been awhile since I did this, but I think it works....GP

OK, that's sort of what I expected, thank you. Turns out I have a few -1 groups, but they all upgrade to -3, and the -3 are in short supply. Decisions!

Never played it with PDU off but I always understood it that the groups would upgrade to the next model when that became available. If it doesn't, it should.
