I've been looking at Germany at War, Gary Grigsby's War in the East/West, and Decisive Campaigns. What are the pluses and minuses of them, and which would you recommend?

Germany at War is really good, and aimed at med range,

Gary Grigsby's War in the East/West with east being hard core and west being slightly only less hard core, but still hard, well both are...

Decisive Campaigns are in the middle and also very good, i have the lot

I did try the Germany at War Barbarossa demo. I dunno... I found it a bit Panzer Corps / General-y. I can't be arsched with all that upgrading / supply business. I do think it's an important factor of battle, obviously - but surely, you get what you're given? I'm sure von Manstein didn't pick up the phone and order the latest model of Panzer when he felt like it.

Which is better: D.C. Blitzkrieg or Case Blue?

Then I'd definitely recommend Gary Grigsby's World at War a World Divided if you haven't got it allready even though its not on your list

Cheers Wolfe - actually, I do have that already, but I need to download it again (new PC). Maybe I'll give it another go.

Consider Commander the Great War, it's not as complex as the other games mentioned, however it is a lot of fun to play, especially in MP....

Ooh, good shout, operating. I love WWI fleets too!

But now, of course, you've added to my choice dilemma.

What's not getting a lot press is the recent 1.60 beta patch that has vastly improved the game, especially navies. To expand on that: In the new official 1.60 patch (soon) destroyer fleets are expected to be included. Have not experienced any CTDs out of the 10-12 MP matches presently and past in 1.60 beta, the latest turn 54 out of 118.

...and, here we go!

Successfully downloaded and patched latest version. Got a number of error messages - something about compression error #2026 (I think) for a shed-load of files. Splash screen works, and I'm able to open the manual, but the game won't start - nothing happens. Checked for updates again, and it says I have the latest version. Should I back it out and go back to my original download version?

OK, I have my limitations on tech help, "in game stuff" I am definitely there for ya. It seems you are reading it right with the compression error. By the way did you buy and download through Steam? Both you and I should check the posts at Matrix and Slitherine Tech Help threads for solutions to this problem. When I bought in, Steam was not involved, however, I do recall other nuances with Steam downloads. Lord Zimoa and johnnybravo are the best sources to get help with your problem. If you do not get this resolved quickly, post a thread at the Matrix CTGW Tech Help thread (same could be said with Slitherine), hopefully someone will answer your call-out promptly. By posting: There are many members who are helpful in this area of know how that could chime in..

Will be back in touch, Bob

Checked the Slitherine CTGW Tech Help: There some dated posts about problems, here is one example: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=214&t=52967
