Greetings all!

First off, I'm very much enjoying the depth of this game so far. I was dubious at first of the price, but was convinced by the content of the forums and the participation of the development team. Congratulations to all involved!

Now, my DB question...

I was toying with a 'what if' scenario with the RN retaining CV HMS Ark Royal beyond 1979, and had a flick through the databases to discover it was not in DB3K - for obvious reasons. I had a tinker and managed to add a new duplicated entry in the post-'80 database.

I was unsure as to whether my entry #2701 would work, but I had nothing better to do at the time and thought having a play around would help me get a better understanding of the game. It did, and I managed to get the ship operational in-game. Except for one thing: I could not get aircraft to launch! The 5-second countdown simply repeated itself with the message 'waiting for runway to become available', or words to that effect.

As far as I can tell, the DB entry is the same as other CVs, with all obvious aircraft facilities in place. Am I missing something obvious and is there a fix?

I fully understand if some of the developers aren't completely happy with customers tinkering around in the DB, adding their own entries etc. but I didn't think that a hypothetical ship such as this would warrant an addition to the official builds due to the priority placed on accuracy and dedication to real-life information. I also appreciate the decision not to spend resources building a DB editor for users to manipulate the DBs - as much as I would like one!!!

If I manage to get this working (or, if my hypothetical is to be added to the official DB3K), I would also be looking to include relevant FAA air units in DB3K to make the carrier true to its 70s self. If acceptable to the community, I would appreciate some pointers here, as I found the DataAircraft area significantly more complicated than the ships, particularly with loadouts and such.

Cheers! J

Hi.

We added Generic Light CATOBAR and Medium CATOBAR carrier hull forms to the databases for players to edit as they like. They're empty shells with everything set up properly which you can just edit in game by adding sensors and mounts etc. We'll be expanding the feature in the future.

As far as your specific issue. What aircraft are you using? Do they have the carrier capable flag set? You might also want to look at the runways etc.

Anyways hope this helps but we really don't support SQL edits and obviously aren't responsible for issues you're having with it etc.

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike, thank you for the quick reply! No worries, I know you guys have plenty more important things to be getting on with!!!

1. It was the carrier capable flag in the end, cheers for that! I assumed that the Buccaneer and the F-4K Phantom would not really have changed after 1980, I'm pretty sure they were still physically capable of carrier operations. Does the change of carrier capability in the DB3K database solely represent that aircrew would no longer be trained for carrier operations?

2. I'll take a look at those generic carriers in future, sounds much easier and more flexible. With regards to expanding this in future, I presume this will extend to other hull types?

3. Can anyone (not specifically the developer/moderator team!) give me any help with understanding the aircraft SQL stuff? Has anyone created their own entries or edited loadouts etc?

1. Yes that's likely it.
2. Not likely. Command isn't a platform builder at this point as we'd like the focus to be on the scenarios. We have added several features though to modify platforms as needed and the carrier ship form was for a player who we felt had been nice to us etc. You can also use our import and delta files to great effect with no risk to your installation.
3.Anybody can look into a SQL editor but understanding it is a different ballgame as its considerably more complex than Harpoon. (ex fuel calc) Given we're still working on the game the Db design changes as well which will be problematic for people making changes. We also might choose to sell the capability as well. So I think encouraging this probably isn't a good idea yet.

Thanks

Mike

Cheers Mike,

Thanks for your concise answers. I think I'm going to knock this on the head for now and go and get my head around delta files! And playing the game, of course! Had some great little scenarios on the go since I'm becoming a bit more adept with the interface and mechanics.
