Hi friends

1.What is the durability of the minefields in ports?

2.How can i know the number or the density of a minefield?
(I laid mines in Henderson with DM and Sub a mounth ago and i want to know how many mines are on?

3.For the allies, what is the best mine?

Same as any other shallow or coastal hex. Except that when it's your opponents port that's been mined, it tends to p1ss him off, and he's much quicker to send a mine-sweeper. Putting mines in deep water hexes however, will cause the number of mines in the hex to erode at 50% per day. So if you put 20 mines in the middle of nowhere, you'd start with 20, the next day you'd have 10, then 5, then 2, then 1, then no more minefield. Minefields in shallow or coastal hexes will not erode however, they must be swept.

You can't. When in doubt, drop more mines.

3.For the allies, what is the best mine?
Not sure off the top of my head. You can check the database, it'll tell you penetration and warhead size of the mine. I've got in my head that the sub-dropped mines (esp Argonaught) are larger than the ones rolled off the back of the DMs (I'm not positive tho). Still, the Argonaught is the only sub I use for minelaying. A human opponent is MUCH more saavy than the AI, and won't continuosly crash himself into a minefield (so mines have a lessened (more realistic) effect if you ask me). I'd rather my subs be shooting torps and leave the minelaying to my MLs (but that's just me).

I use my ML and subs for mine-laying all of the time. The ML are best used for shutting down the hexes East of Lunga to make any Allied bombardment force have to take the long way in. This is assuming you own Lunga, of course which you should have no trouble doing in the first couple of days of the war.

My subs are used to lay mines in enemy ports. Always keep a regular sub or two in those ports to pick off the minesweepers. Unlike large transports, it only takes 1 torpedo hit to sink a minesweeper. As you sink more and more minesweepers this way things get easier and easier.

Actually Yamamoto,

Putting a DMS with a bombardment or surface TF works wonders for this. They don't like taking on MSWs (they're pretty slow). But the DMS can keep speed with the big boys without a problem. It's been my experience that :

1. The TF (with DMS) sprints into the minefield, the DMS rings the "Holy sh1t" alarm.
2. The TF sprints back out.
3. The TF runs back in towards objective, and the DMS clears a path. The TF continues on it's business.

And it only does that back-out, charge back in" thing if its a minefield hex that wasn't already spotted. Once you've ID'd the minefield hexes, the DMS just plows a path on the way to target (your TF now head straight in, even if it has to cross 3 minefields to do so).

The DMSs are great (and quite fast). Don't leave home without 'em! You just have to keep an eye on their range, they don't have much endurance.

I wouldn't know. I only play the Japanese side and they aren't allowed to add minesweepers to surface combat, bombardment, or CV tast groups. The Japanese don't have any ships of the DMS class so they're just $hit out of luck in tha regard.

I thought the DMS fell into the same catagory as a DD for mine sweeping, not that of a MSW.

I was almost positive I have lost some of these to minefields when going after Shortland and had to bring up some real MSW's to clear the place out.

I agree though, they are great little ships, with good speed, but are somewhat limited on fuel. (a run from Noumea to Lunga at high speed is a one way trip)

I can say with all confidense that I have recieved the "Minefield Spotted!" "Clears a path thru minefield!" "Widens a path thru minefield!" messages with DMSs. In fact, if you put 2 DMSs in your TF, you get the complimentary messages, "clears" and "widens".

But Yamamoto is correct that, you can't put a MSW in with Surface or Bombardment TFs (which excludes IJN from this advantage since they have no DMSs).

I can positively confirm that DMSs work quite well. Their range is prohibative tho (as discussed earlier). You have to top them off at Luganville before leaving. They've got enough endurance to clear the way to Lunga, but you've got to meet them on the way home just a little south of San Cristobal with an oiler, or they have to crawl back to Neva (where I also keep a fuel reserve).

DMSs are wonderful things.

How do you get the Argonaut? I have not seen it in any of the scenarios. I have looked for name and Hull numbers, both ss-166 and SM-1 . I can think of many great uses for a sub with 60 mines. :D

I'm playing 3 PBEM games with scen 19 as IJN and all my opponent has Argonaut. They wreaking havoc to my APs.:(
