Something strange seems to be happening at P.M. Allied bombardment is causing 200-500 losses a turn. This seems to be very high compared to the rest of the map.

My forces: 2 div and a base force, level 2 forts and supplies. Good leaders and 90+ morale, 60+exp.

The Aussies: 38,41,45,49,53 inf bttn, 19 and 2/4 mg bttn, 9 and P.M. brig + base force.
Intel says he has 38 guns, probably more.

Last turns losses 490J 6A.

any thoughts? what am I missing?

Your developed base plus support squads shield you from malaria effects. Japs may have lots of disabled squads, not enough support, no supply, high fatigue and disruption. Threshold have been reached and you are now just lobbing shells into a hospital-morgue complex.

Support helps in malarial zones? I must have missed that.

This is John. I'm the allies in the game Scott and I are playing and he knows I'm posting on this comment thread. As you can see from the image I've posted, the results at Moresby do appear to be a big lopsided. I only have a few guns there (some 6 inch and 18 pounders but not too many) and I'm getting results that are just a little shy of what Scott is doing to me in China where he has massed heavy batteries. While I'm sure that much of this can be put down to the brilliant human handling of the allies, , it does seem to be a bit out of whack. Unless not being in a base in Malaria really is bad.

Question, How does the japanese have 2 forts? The way I read it, and being an AFB, I think the allies still hold PM at that point. What i'm saying is, and as Yaab stated above, if the japanese are not in control of the base, then the malaria thing is the issue. In terms of fatigue. And if they have been trying to take the base for more than a few weeks. The troops are getting sick....GP

GP, the allies do still control Moresby and Scott can rest assured that I have an undisclosed fort level in there. But, I'm not surprised that the IJA also has a fort level. I've always been under the impression that both forces in a hex can have a fort level. Is this incorrect?

Good question.I don't think I have come across that. But I think I remember that the side that controls the hex gets the forts. Remember, If you counter attack the enemy, You don't have to beat down the forts. If its your hex....GP

field forts? The don't show up in the CR, but I would assume they affect combat.

Troops outside of a base will build forts if they are stationary. The rate of building depends on many factors, but the maximum build is level 4. If I'm remembering correctly.

It is also Jan 30, so the allies are probably at or near 100% preparation for the hex. This can have a huge effect on how accurate his guns are. Once you get your guys dug in to level 3+ artillery bombardments should start causing less disruption, until then you going to get hammered.

Level 5, I believe. (I've had troops in place for two+ years in mountainous terrain without ever going higher than 5, but who knows.)

In my current action vs Pillager at Buna (Japanese control Buna base), all units in attacking Allied forces have built fortifications. It appears that each LCU is independently building its own fortifications rather than a common fortification for all units - in my instance, some LCU have level 2 fortifications, others have level 3. As wdolson stated, fortification level of individual LCU depending on "factors".

Could malaria be that big of a factor? I did not have enough support squads in the initial landing, but after losses both divs are fully supported. I should be taking heavier losses then the aussies, but the ratio seems to be out of wack. You have all been very helpful, I had forgotten about malaria.

Does malaria count as a loss enhancer or do squads start dying because of it if LCUs are not in a base even if they're supplied and not under fire?

Malaria can kill if most/all of an equipment item stack is disabled, since disabled squads start to die if they suffer disablements and none are left in the stack to be disabled. For the most part malaria hexes cause fatigue and disablements and perhaps a bit of disruption though I’m not sure about that.

The real killer about malaria hexes is it makes it very difficult if not impossible for units to recover fatigue and disablements. So plan on rotating units out of malaria zones for R&R at rear area temperate bases or very large bases within malaria zones. I think a base needs to be level 9 (combined level includes either or both port and airfield levels) or something before it negates malaria effects.

Edit: As to the loss disparity, the allied fort levels are probably negating most of the counter-fire, so the allies sit impervious behind their forts and slam the Japanese milling about in the relative open. Once Japanese forts get above level 3 Japanese losses should decrease quite a bit, though they will probably always suffer worse losses until their prep gets up to 100% for the location.

I’m not 100% sure, but I do believe fatigue and disruption does make you more vulnerable to incoming fire, so malaria is causing more losses to occur in a roundabout way I think. A dev would need to confirm this though.

Jim

There simply isn't anywhere near enough info here to provide a definitive answer.  The oft referred "malaria" is not being presented accurately.  In AE no one dies from "malaria".

In  the interim, strongly suggest that all read this thread:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3701981&mpage=1&key=counter%2Cbattery&#3702249

paying particular attention to my post therein.  Doing so will indicate the type of info needed to properly explain the situation in question.
